A rewarding hike to Fern Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park. We were getting over a head cold, but still made it. There was a waterfall along the way, and the lake is so peaceful and surrounded by peaks. On our way back we spotted a family of elk in the woods and was able to get some neat shots before heading back to the trailhead.

Very cool day with temps. in the high 40's. This is a nice forested portion of the PCT and the trail fairly flat with easy grading. We met 9 PCT through hikers and 1 section hiker. We talked for a bit and we wished them well. Steamboat Lake is beautiful and we met 2 fisherman that gave us info about the Mt. Adams Wilderness fire that was sparked by lightning...

September 8 to September 10, 2012 Jen 8 miles 1,000 feet gained 2 nights

Deep swimmable lake in the Clackamas watershed. Full of trout and crawdads. Short enough hike for kids. Many options for dayhikes from here. What a great location!

September 8 to September 9, 2012 Barnaby B. 2.5 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

Came here with my wife, who hates camping, and we tried cabin camping instead. There are some beautiful waterfalls here, and the trails are beautiful, the trees are big. This was the first state park in CA, and for good reason. Went much better, the final verdict was that she disliked cabin camping less than tent camping. I want to go back here and do a back...

When we hiked Yocum we saw the green meadows of Paradise Park and wanted to check it out but were unsure at the time if there was a trail going up there. I came across the trail while reading trip reports on portland hikers. While reading the reports I also came across a few talking about a crashed B26 from 1949. Being the a fan of historical sites I had to ...

Another beautiful day in the PNW. Headed to the Chain Lakes, unfortunately so did half the state. Started the loop from Artist's Point. Near where the trail splits from Ptarmigan Ridge did some exploring before heading back on the loop. Some snow but nothing to worry about. Water fairly plentiful. Great views. Main drawback was the crowds, and the noise. Sou...

September 8, 2012 Mileage Mike 6.5 miles 750 feet gained

This was a bit of a rehabilitation hike as I'm trying to get my knee back to normal. It was a beautiful day and the lakes were nice but there were plenty of people on the trail. On our way back there were many backpackers hoping to find a site at Twin Lakes. The parking lot had 21 cars in it when we finished.

September 7, 2012 Jen 5 miles 500 feet gained

Showed friends from Bend this wonderful old bit of history.

September 7 to September 8, 2012 Roman 9.5 miles 2,500 feet gained 1 night

We actually camped 2/3 mile below High Camp because of T-storms (little did I know that the forecast of 20% chance of T-storm meant that more than half dozen of lightning storms will roll through between 4pm on Sat and 4am on Sun, good we erred on a safe side and didn't go higher). Got plenty of lightning and some downpour and hail at night. Visited High Cam...

September 4, 2012 Ken 8.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

First hike after surgery for detached retina. Per MD, had to take it easy so headed to Tonga Ridge for a nice leg-stretcher. An absolutely beautiful day. I chose to bypass the side-trail to Sawyer and headed further along the TR trail. Continued on towards Deception Creek but, after coming to the second stream at about 4.25 miles Dibs decided to call it a da...

September 3, 2012 Mileage Mike 7.2 miles 2,250 feet gained

We have never been to this area and found it to be a great hike. We parked at the forest road and went down to the White River. We aren't experienced at crossing this type of creek and there was no bridge, so we turned around and went up the trail from the road. This trail passes through a small portion of Badger Creek Wilderness and constantly gains elevati...

Not much of a few up on Newton Bald. Was an old cattle grazing spot, just like the other balds, except this one hasn't been kept clear by the parks dept. Hard climb for not much of a view. Kept going past the bald up to CS 52. Neat spot. Would think that it would be cold and windy up that high ~5100 ft.

September 2, 2012 Mileage Mike 10 miles 1,750 feet gained

Beautiful cool and clear day on the PCT and hiking into the north side of Indian Heaven Wilderness. It was like Grand Central Station with many people picking the Huckleberries. There was also a PCT Trail Angel waiting for through hikers to show up! We saw at least 8 PCT through hikers and 2 men with 4 horses and 2 dogs that were heading to Snoqualomie Pass....

September 1 to September 2, 2012 isaac 5.5 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

We originally tried to go camping at Lake Santeetlah, but couldn't find any open grounds. Instead went to Deep Creek to camp for the night. Before we turned in the evening, we hiked a short way up to Hammerbranch Cemetery. Once we got off on the spur trail, we didn't see any people. Before that, it's heavily trafficked around the camp grounds (car and RV cam...

September 1 to September 4, 2012 Barnaby B. 13 miles 6,000 feet gained 3 nights

There are no bathrooms in the Santa Fe National Forest! So we spent 3 nights out there and at the end went to a Japanese spa in the city. Great hiking up mountains, very tall. Dad got winded but it was the best trip we had ever taken together.

September 1 to September 4, 2012 Water (Matt) 35 miles 6,500 feet gained 3 nights

All summer Bucket and I shared vague talk of going to the Sawtooths or White Cloud mountains of Idaho as our 'big backpacking trip' of the summer. 4 days before our departure date I stumbled onto the summitpost page for the Kootenay Rockwall Trail. I showed Bucket a picture and she said it looked great.. the pressure was now on to figure out a smorgasbord of...

September 1 to September 2, 2012 Kyle Meyer 21 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

Wonderful tour of Indian Heaven. Met up with my dad at Lake Wapiki for the night and otherwise roamed aimlessly and explored lakes. No mosquitoes.

August 31 to September 3, 2012 Chris 50.5 miles 14,500 feet gained 3 nights

What a great little trip this is. The Spider Gap - Buck Creek Pass Loop is in the eastern half of Glacier Peak Wilderness, east of Seattle. Thursday evening, I took the 5ish hour drive up to the Trinity trail head. Beware - the last 13 or so miles are gravel, but they are fine so long as you have a decent truck or take them slow. Day 1 - 15.0 mi., 5000' I go...

August 31 to September 3, 2012 jon 15 miles 5,750 feet gained 3 nights

Visited the Enchantments for the second year in a row after staying at Stuart Lake the previous year. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend another Labor Day weekend here, but decided at the beginning of the year that I'd at least attempt a Colchuck Lake permit through the lottery. Once it turned out that I actually won one, I couldn't say no. Staying at Colchu...

August 31, 2012 Mileage Mike 6 miles 500 feet gained

This was our last hike at Crater Lake. It was cool out but very hazy due to smoke! This was a somewhat bland piece of the PCT but we were under a time constraint since we needed to drive back to Vancouver, WA (~6hrs). We did meet up with more very nice PCT through hikers: Straw & Willey Spins & Baboon The through hikers are very optomistic that the weather w...

August 30, 2012 Courtney Basik 11 miles 1,750 feet gained

Took Roper on his first Colorado hiking trip to Golden Gate Canyon State Park in Golden, CO. Mid-hike you end up at Panorama Point where you have an amazing lookout of a piece of the Continental Divide.

August 30 to September 1, 2012 Stacey 23.5 miles 5,500 feet gained 2 nights

We had originally planned for this to be a 4 day / 3 night trip, but after encountering holiday weekend crowds and few campsites along Goat Ridge decided to cut it a day short. None the less, it was a fantastic weekend, with sunny warm days and miles of trails through endless fields of wildflowers. Day 1 (Thursday) - Walupt Lake to Sheep Lake Started our tri...

August 30, 2012 Mileage Mike 9.6 miles 1,500 feet gained

This is one beautiful wilderness. We only made it a 1/2mile past Lake Waban but would have liked to make it farther. From the pictures I've seen of Lake Harriette I need to go back there for a backpack trip! Even though it was hazy from all the forest fires, it was clear enough for great pictures. It was also cool weather with some breezes. Another great per...

August 29, 2012 Mileage Mike 9.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Today was exceptionally clear in contrast to the previous smoke filled days. The temperature reached into the low 70s and was refreshingly cool in the shade, but we all got burned from the hot sun at the high altitude. The views on the Alternate PCT rim trail were spectacular and continuous throughout the hike. We decided on a side trip up to The Watchman wh...

August 28, 2012 Mileage Mike 11 miles 1,250 feet gained

We took the East Crater TH (not on map) and cut in to the PCT in about 1/3 mile. My. Thielsen Wilderness is spectacular! There were almost no bugs and the temperature was in the 60's with just a few clouds rolling by every once in a while. We wanted to intersect the summit trail but it was just beyond our desired stop time. A sign near the TH said the trail ...

August 27, 2012 Mileage Mike 10.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

The day started out very hazy with low visibility from fires but cleared as the day progressed. We hiked the PCT around most of Mt. McLoughlin but had no views :(. Met 2 through hikers, Dazzle and Magellan, who talked about all the wildfire issues in California. Beautiful wilderness but it's a wildfire waiting to happen with the huge (and I mean huge) amount...

August 26, 2012 Randy Frost 10.5 miles 4,500 feet gained

This was my third trip. 4.25 hrs up 3 down. It was clear but very windy up top. I lost my hat into the crater.

August 26, 2012 Mileage Mike 3.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

I'm at Crater Lake for the week. Exceptional weather but some haze from all the wildfires. This was a driving day but wanted a short hike to loosen up. Excellent view from the top!

August 25 to August 27, 2012 Water (Matt) 7 miles 3,500 feet gained 2 nights

Special trip for me. I grew up fishing with my dad in the midwest, mostly on Lake Erie. But occasionally doing other things. It wasn't until I was 22 and met my one day wife that I actually got into backpacking. That said my cousin showed an interest in fishing pretty early on and joined my dad and I on a lot of trips. Over the years my interest in fishing w...

August 25, 2012 Stacey 12.5 miles 5,000 feet gained

Left Portland on Friday at 3:45pm, arriving at the Devil's Lake TH / campground shortly before 8pm. We were lucky enough to get the last half campsite. (Thanks again to the wonderful folks who were gracious enough to share!) Despite the cool night temperatures, it hasn't gotten cold enough to frost, so the mosquitos were out in force. I think I got about a d...

August 25 to August 26, 2012 Roman 19 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

We did the hike as per attached nwhiker.com link; added a side trip to Twin Peaks (trail #1144) and to a butte just west of Shoe Lake. In short, going to Shoe Lake, from mile 5 on, the country is incredible - with open alpine views, fields of flowers, and probably the nicest lake in the Goat Rocks. The color of Shoe Lake is preternatural blue, the bottom is ...
