October 6 to October 7, 2012 isaac 14.8 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

14.8 miles out-and-back. We hiked in to CS-95 (roughly 2 - 2.5 mi) and spent the night. In the morning we hiked up to Gregory Bald. It was chilly and foggy when we started out. Was wet, windy, and cloudy when we reached the top (roughly 4.5 - 5 mi). Still an amazing hike. Hiked back down to campsite, packed up and headed to car (roughly 7.5 mi).

October 6 to October 7, 2012 Chris 31.5 miles 8,750 feet gained 1 night

I found this hike by accident while browsing the internet for a different Marmot Lake (in ONP). A little bit longer of a drive than I wanted (about an hour outside of Seattle)—but it looked interesting, so I thought I'd check it out. It seems that many discount the hikes around the Stevens Pass/Snoqualmie Pass area, but this turned out to be a great one. I s...

October 6, 2012 Roman 12 miles 2,250 feet gained

Actual elev. gain 2195 ft, length 12.15 miles. Good hike with great view of Mt. Hood from E Zigzag summit, though the approach road is a pain... I had to park a couple of miles below the trailhead and hike the road (lots of hunters there, some ATV-ers, not so many hikers), in hindsight I could've driven all the way up. The trail was quiet and pretty good; th...

October 6, 2012 Mileage Mike 7.1 miles 1,000 feet gained

Now that I've been diagnosed with a meniscal tear in my knee and a labral tear in my shoulder, my hiking days are numbered until the surgery. I'm hoping the surgery will be sometime at the end of November but still need the MRI's to validate the diagnosis. The sports medicine Orthopedist has told me the prognosis is excellent with full recovery expected. The...

October 5, 2012 Father Guido Sarducci 10 miles 3,250 feet gained

Hike is to a former fire lookout site so there are awesome 360-degree views from the top. There are no water sources while heading up and with the majority of the hike being exposed pring plenty of liquids on a warm day.

October 4, 2012 Randy Frost 6 miles 2,000 feet gained

Took a nice solo trip with my dog. This was his first real hike. It was clear but very windy at top. I could see smoke from distant wild fires.

October 1, 2012 Bosterson 21 miles 1,500 feet gained

Planned to do the whole 30 mile Skyline to the Sea route (which runs from the Santa Cruz mountains down to the Pacific Ocean) as a dayhike, but the trail was kind of boring, spends a lot of time near roads, and my feet felt kinda thrashed from running downhill in hiking shoes in Nisene Marks a couple of days ago, so I bailed out at the Big Basin Redwoods par...

September 30, 2012 Mileage Mike 8.6 miles 1,500 feet gained

Amazingly clear day with great coolish weather. Parking lot was full at the Elk Meadows TH. Many people headed out to Elk Meadows but we turned toward Umbrella Falls and averted the crowd. Umbrella Falls is quite spectacular with only a few people in the area. After the falls visit we continued on the Umbrella FallsTrail until we intersected the Timberline T...

September 29 to September 30, 2012 Joshua Hudson 22 miles 5,750 feet gained 1 night

My dad and I hiked the High Divide Loop as an end of the summer season hike. The weather was amazing and the views even more so. We did the loop in two days with a camp at Hoh Lake. We went counter clockwise around the loop, so we could get the major elevation gains on the first day. As for wildlife we saw a couple bear and a couple bull elk. We missed a her...

September 29 to September 30, 2012 Water (Matt) 14 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

First time to Jeff Park. It only took 5 years.. The lakes were cool and trout filled (4 small ones - 3 eastern brook, 1 rainbow), but also people filled. Detoured on Sunday to around the base of Jefferson and scrambled up a bit following some flagging on the North Slope. Also scrambled around Park Ridge. full moon was a nice touch. first time solo camping, w...

September 29 to September 30, 2012 Roman 18 miles 5,000 feet gained 1 night

Wow it was quite a trip. Camped below Hawkeye summit - one of 2 goat "hot spots" in GR - and one goat came close to my tent shortly after sunset, but my first attempt to take a picture scared it away. After the dinner I found a group of about 20 goats and being slow and patient was able to get to within 10-15 yards of them; they're not nearly as fearful as d...

September 29, 2012 Stacey 12.5 miles 2,250 feet gained

Hiked the Paradise Park loop from Timberline Lodge, with a side trip up Zig Zag Canyon to the waterfall. Lots of gorgeous fall color. Avoid the crowds by hiking the loop clockwise.

September 29, 2012 Chris 14 miles 3,000 feet gained

After hearing all the reports about the Breitenbush Trailhead, I decided to do a trip from Olallie Lake area down toward Jefferson Park. I parked between Monon and Horseshoe lake and then cut over to the PCT and then down. The weather this time of year is my favorite—just cool enough and no bugs. Went up to the ridge above Jeffy Park, ate my lunch, and then ...

September 29, 2012 Mileage Mike 7.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

Beautiful day that started out a bit cloudy but ended up clear. The June Lake TH had about 6 cars in in when we arrived and about 8 when we finished. June Lake is a must see and has a Fantasy Island feel about it! We traveled CCW on the Loowit toward Ape Canyon. Not many people on the Loowit trail and the views were spectacular. My wife, however, didn't like...

September 28, 2012 Bosterson 20.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

A little loop in the woods. Got to Five Finger Falls and then up to the Soquel Demonstration viewpoint at 2500' (no view!), then ran out of time and skipped going to Maple Falls on the way down.

September 27 to September 30, 2012 Water (Matt) 37.5 miles 8,500 feet gained 3 nights

-=Second half of our British Columbia trip=- *caveat - long winded* After hiking 6.7miles out from Floe Lake at the Southern Terminus of the Kootenay Nat'l Park Rockwall Trail we went into Radium Hot Springs and Invermere for an afternoon of errands, hot springs, authentic German food, and pre-packing for the next leg of our trip. We contemplated staying at ...

September 24, 2012 Courtney Basik 5 miles 750 feet gained

This was one of our favorite hikes at Rocky Mountain National Park because there are so many lookouts and views of Longs Peak and surrounding mountains. Gorgeous.

September 23, 2012 Roman 1.5 miles 750 feet gained

A short off-trail scramble/bushwhack. I didn't realize there was a crater at first, looking at tiny GPS map thought it would be a bare, rounded summit - tried to follow gps to the summit (actually - the crater:) and wondered why it said me go down, not up. The rocky summit was pretty cool and the view is wide open (only partially blocked by the trees to the ...

September 23, 2012 Father Guido Sarducci 9.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

One of my hiking goals this year was to hike to all 4 of the existing fire lookouts within Mt. Rainier National Park. The 4 lookouts are Shriner, Fremont, Tolmie and Gobblers Knob. Gobblers Knob can be hiked via several TH's. We hiked to the lookout from the Lake Christie TH. While smoke was not a problem physically it did effect views from the lookout.

September 23, 2012 Mileage Mike 7.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

We started the Salmon River trail at the SE border of the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness. We quickly intercepted the Dry Lake trail, which had been overgrown two years before We decided to check it out and found it had been cleared all the way the the stream at the wilderness boundary. We then headed back west on the Salmon River trail until we reached an old...

September 22 to September 23, 2012 Roman 4.8 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

With just Sunday free, still wanted to get an overnighter. Hiked in Sat. night and camped at the lake. Explored around on Sunday and ate a lot of huckleberries (all berries seem to be on the back side of the lake), then did another short hike in the area.

September 22 to September 23, 2012 Chris 21 miles 5,250 feet gained 1 night

Did this classic loop this weekend. Now I see why it's so popular. Far more interesting than the southern half of Goat Rocks, with some really beautiful views. And wow, the crowds. I thought surely this late in the season the backpackers would be out in fewer numbers, but I still must have seen over 100 people out there—I can't imagine what it's like during ...

September 22, 2012 Mileage Mike 9 miles 1,000 feet gained

Fantastic clear and cool fall day! My knee is still giving me problems so we wanted to hike an easier trail with a bit less elevation gain. Although I prefer hiking this trail in the winter it was a great hike with only a couple of hikers. There were also two groups of people on horseback and a few bike riders, but we only saw them in the first hour or so.

September 18 to September 19, 2012 John Williams 10 miles 3,750 feet gained 1 night

Absolutely incredible hike. The last 40 feet or so is fairly dangerous, but it can be done if you know what you're doing, without ropes.

September 18 to September 19, 2012 WildBill9685 20 miles 6,000 feet gained 1 night

This was an awesome hike. I wanted to try and experience all of the north side of Hood. I started about 6 in the morning and hit McNeil point at about 9. From there I made my way down through the burn areas from the 2011 Dollar lake fire. There was still a lot of beautiful meadows tucked away in all the burned trees. Saw some cougar tracks and a lot of bear ...

September 16, 2012 Mileage Mike 8.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

We hiked the PCT at Panther Creek and headed up toward NF-68. Near the top of the switchbacks we bushwacked to an abandoned road that traced the PCt but was a 100ft or so below the trail. The road intersects the PCT in the region of the trail that looks like a boot. We then completed the loop using the PCT to head back toward the car. It was cool in the morn...

September 15, 2012 Chris 14.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

Started at the Hummocks trailhead, went up to Johnston Ridge and back down. Was going to make a big loop around to Coldwater Peak, but I just started too late in the day, didn't do the mileage calculations beforehand, and was going to end up hiking in the dark. Johnston Ridge Observatory still had tons of people, even this late in the year.

September 15 to September 16, 2012 Kyle Meyer 12 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

Went for another weekend in the world's greatest place (for two months a year). This time, my wife Christy and I and five other friends met up at Blue Lake for a campout. Christy's never been to Indian Heaven before, so we made a loop from our camp at Blue Lake north on the PCT to Bear Lake and then south on the CCT back to the Rock Lakes. We picked a quart ...

September 15 to September 16, 2012 Jack 4.5 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

Hiked in Friday morning on an un maintained trail in search of solitude and fish. We found the solitude but the fish were elusive. These lakes are certainly off the beaten path. We stumbled on Darlene lake by accident after losing the trail on the way in and wandering a bit. Our primary destination was Peggy lake but by the time we got to Darlene we were poo...

September 15, 2012 Mileage Mike 3.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

After failing to find the trail at Clackamas River we headed toward the closest trail for a known great hike. The Dry Ridge Trail in Roaring River Wilderness was a short distance away, and doesn't disappoint! The campground was closed, so we parked off of Hwy 224. It was obvious a trail maintenance crew was here as this trail was in need of some tender care....

September 15, 2012 Mileage Mike 1 miles 250 feet gained

I had to work most of the day but still needed to get out for a short hike. We were heading toward Molalla River when we came upon a big accident, and then turned around and headed to the Clackamas River area. We decided to look for trails that show up on the Accuterra maps. Unfortunately, these trails have been reclaimed. :( The good part of this is that th...

September 14 to September 15, 2012 John Williams 16.4 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

This hike can only be done during the summer or year-round if rain hasn't been falling very much. It's the only 'back country' camping allowed in Redwood State/National Parks. It's a breathtaking, easy hike.

September 14 to September 16, 2012 WildBill9685 20 miles 5,500 feet gained 2 nights

This was an awesome 3 day backpacking adventure. I had never been in this area before. The flowers were still somewhat alive and the weather was perfect. The smoke from the wild fires to the south made some of the views a bit hazy. I was able to see all 3 of the major Washington cascade mountains. Probably the view of Rainer I can ever remember seeing.

September 13 to September 17, 2012 Nick of the woods 15 miles 0 feet gained 4 nights

Crab Lake to Cummings and the best Bass fishing I have ever had.
