August 4 to August 5, 2012 Hendrik Morkel 11 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

From the Camp Triglav camping place in Trenta to the spring of the river Soca, this was a nice, relaxing day trip within the UL Summit. On the way back we visited the Alpine Botanical Garden of Slovenia, which showcased many of the flowers we've seen on our trip.

A nice trip to Lower Lena Lake. Was planning on staying the night, but it ended up being very buggy, so I made it a day hike. Did a little bit up towards Upper Lena as well. The trout fishing was pretty decent—no state fishing license required in ONP!

August 4 to August 5, 2012 jon 12 miles 6,500 feet gained 1 night

Went with friends this weekend for a saturday overnight on the mountain. Talking with folks at the trailhead the first morning, it sounded like half of the Northwest was up there. One guy said that a ranger told him that there were hundreds of permits taken for the weekend. Not knowing how much of the various ridges were melted out (and lacking a snow shovel...

August 4 to August 6, 2012 Roman 15 miles 3,750 feet gained 2 nights

Hiked to Old Snowy Mountain with my mom this weekend. We bailed on Hawkeye Point (planned both summits) because of steep snow and mosquitoes, but still had a great trip. GR is definitely open for business, but if you want to see the best of the flowers (and much fewer flying buggers) my guess is about last weekend of August would be best.

August 4, 2012 Randy Frost 8 miles 1,250 feet gained

Thought we would beat the heat and start early. I have never done this loop in reverse so I thought that it might be more of a workout with more EG. It looks like WTA is cutting in some new tracks below sr14.

August 4, 2012 Mileage Mike 9.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Actual mileage 9.3 miles, elevation 1588ft Although the Portland area was burning up with temperatures in the mid-90's, the temps on the snowfields going towards Jefferson Park were in the 70's! We weren't prepared for so much snow and such slow progress and ended up turning around before reaching the ridge that overlooked Jefferson Park. Many people were on...

August 2, 2012 Jen 10 miles 250 feet gained

On a famliy vacation, I was able to visit the Cape Cod National Seashore - multiple locations including Coast Guard Beach, First Encounter Beach, a bog wildlife area in Harwich, and a conservancy site in Dennis. My favorite spot was the dunes area near Provincetown- very much like our own Oregon Dunes!

August 1 to August 5, 2012 Hendrik Morkel 43 miles 19,000 feet gained 4 nights

We started from the camping place in Bohinja Bistrica, from where we hiked for five days till Trenta through the Triglav National Park. The highlight was bivying at 2300m elevation on a barren high plateau with Mt. Triglav in view and Ibexes as neighbours. A superb trip!

August 1, 2012 Nat Turner 7 miles 500 feet gained

I only tasted this sucker, whole thing is 33 miles one way. Bugs were thick, off trail looked miserable. Massive amount of leftover goldrush rusty jumbles.

August 1 to August 3, 2012 Tom 26.5 miles 0 feet gained 2 nights

Hiked from Finland MN south to Beaver Bay with two buddies and had a blast. After the hike we biked about 20 miles back to our vehicles.

July 31, 2012 Ken 12.5 miles 4,250 feet gained

This may have been the perfect day for a hike. A beautiful, sunny day, blue skies with only a few cirrus clouds, moderate temps, not too many bugs (but more than enough), incredible views, and a good trail. Lots of snow at 5000' but the trail is always easy to find. The only people we encountered were a couple of guys heading up as we (me and Dibs the wonder...

July 29, 2012 Ken 5.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Wanted to do a quick hike so headed to Barclay Lake. Nice easy hike. Did try and get up to Eagle Lake but trail is steep and hard to follow so abandoned the idea due to lateness of day. Though crowded on way up I had the trail to myself heading back.

July 29, 2012 Stacey 13 miles 2,000 feet gained

This hike followed the Boundary Trail to above St. Helens Lake and then continued to Coldwater Peak. The trail is easy and wide for the first mile or so, from that point, the trail follows an exposed ledge (which may scare unexperienced hikers) for about 1/4 mile. After, that, its back to easy hiking until past the junction to Harry's Ridge. After Harry's Ri...

July 29, 2012 Bosterson 10 miles 3,000 feet gained

After doing Thielsen, we drove up to Sisters and cowboy camped in the 3FJ parking lot. Got up a little after 5am Sunday and hoofed it along the PCT, then up a horridly steep scree slope (next time I'll do the alternate route that cuts straight to the ridge) and onto the loose scree ridge to the actual climbing. We were the first party up, which was good sinc...

July 28, 2012 WildBill9685 8 miles 3,500 feet gained

Table round 2. This time the weather was beautiful and the views were just amazing. We did take a wrong trail starting out and ended up bushwacking the first mile in. We ran into a group 2 others that had made the same mistake.

July 28, 2012 Stacey 8 miles 2,250 feet gained

Beautiful day for a hike up to Cairn Basin along the Mazama Trail. The last time I was up in this area was last year, one day after the Dollar Lake Fire started. It was interesting to see how the fire changed the look of the mountain. There is still some snow in areas, and we did have to cross a snow bridge to get into Cairn Basin. I'm expecting that the sno...

July 28, 2012 Bosterson 10 miles 3,750 feet gained

Trail slog to scree slog up to the summit block, which is about 50 ft of easy 4th class climbing. We had a rope and gear but I would ditch it next time - it's not necessary and just weighted down our packs for the hike.

July 28 to July 29, 2012 Mileage Mike 13.7 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

Actual mileage 13.7 miles, elevation gain 2125ft This is my first backpacking trip this summer and it was with my son. Saturday was a spectacular day with great views of the Salmon River and valley. There were a large number of people camping and on the trail but they diminished with distance from the TH! We ended up camping at a small campsite that was a fe...

July 26 to July 29, 2012 Jen 30 miles 8,000 feet gained 3 nights

Fun backpack with Awildman. The flowers on the Plains of Abraham were spectacular.

July 25 to July 27, 2012 Shane 21 miles 3,000 feet gained 2 nights

I'll have to add to this later. All I can say for now is that this was an amazing parade of lakes, valleys, mountains, waterfalls, meadows, trout, and general fantastic-ness that I will guarantee a return to this area to do a more thorough exploration. You really get everything you could hope for in this hike. Want to fish? You can hardly get your caddis on ...

July 23 to July 24, 2012 Shane 12 miles 2,500 feet gained 1 night

This lake is spectacular! Not only were the lakes, creek and surrounding mountains spectacular, but the wildlife was too. On our way into the lake, we saw 3 white-tail bucks and a WOLVERINE! Unfortunately, it was evening by the time we got to the lake, and our cameras weren't up to the task of capturing the shy beast, but no matter, I don't think I'll be for...

July 22, 2012 Nat Turner 11.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

4th annual Salmon Butte Climb. Sucky 20% views, 80% mostly socked in, but that forest is rad. Not even a trace of snow at 5K.

July 22, 2012 Mileage Mike 11.9 miles 2,000 feet gained

Actual mileage 11.9miles, elevation 2120ft What an interesting day. The temperature in Hood River was about 67degF and partly sunny while that at Wahtum Lake was 50degF and fogged in with significant wind gusts. We put on extra clothing and headed out. The PCT is in excellent shape along this segment. The cloud base finally lifted near the rock outcroppings ...

July 21, 2012 Ken 8 miles 2,500 feet gained

Got a really late start. Lots of cars at TH but most of the folks we saw were coming back and so we had a quiet hike. Did not go all the way to the lake as I twisted my knee so turned around at about 4 miles. Still, it was just nice to be out in the woods enjoying a beautiful day.Trail was in very good shape with no snow.

July 21, 2012 Jack 4 miles 1,500 feet gained

Zach and I did the short drive from the hood to Whatum lk for the day. Perfect hiking weather. Got there relatively early, about 6 vehicles there. Unlike Lost lake, that you'll find advertised on a zillion post cards, Whatum is deserted by comparison. (having to hike down 400 steps to the lk is a deterent too for a lot of folk. Hiked around the lake, did Chi...

July 21 to July 22, 2012 Roman 13.5 miles 2,500 feet gained 1 night

Did a short overnight trip with my mom - we did Lookout loop clockwise and camped near the summit. Perfect weather, near-perfect timing. Being the first time there, we did mess out a few things - took a wrong trail from wrong trailhead at first, then missed a turn to South Point we planned to visit, then not being sure where North Point is (no signs of it) w...

July 21, 2012 Bosterson 42.5 miles 12,000 feet gained

Thru-hike from Starvation Cr. TH to Eagle Cr. TH. Six mountains are: Defiance, Green Point, Tomlike, Chinidere, Indian, and Tanner Butte. Quite a full day's walk...

July 21, 2012 Father Guido Sarducci 8.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Trail a bit muddy when you get close to the lake but overall trail is in good shape. Trail is very popular and parking lot was full when I showed up late morning. There are some very nice campsites @ the lake..

July 21, 2012 Mileage Mike 9.9 miles 2,500 feet gained

Actual Mileage 9.9miles, total elevation 2580ft This hike was fantastic! We parked at about the 3500ft level next to a cut-in on the Fanton Trail. After about 3/4mile we took the Old Baldy trail to Tumalo Mt. (formerly Squaw Mt.). The view from Tumalo Mt. is nothing short of amazing with no logging to be seen and a clear view of Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness...
