Exceptional weather and clear view of Mt. St. Helens. We took the Toutle Trail #238 to the Sheep Canyon Area. There was a beautiful ~100ft waterfall, from a rock outcropping, a short distance up the Sheep Canyon trail! After turning around we headed back to the TH via the Blue Horse trail. Not many insects except for a few biting flies! The trail was in exce...

I hiked along the Plaza Trail from Abbot Road and visited Sheepshead Rock, then continued to the junction with the Salmon Mountain Trail and headed out that ridgeline. I tried to find the DC-9 crash site and failed, but I did find the nearby helicopter crash site- the search party that went looking for the plane the next day. I also found someone's camera, w...

August 20 to August 22, 2012 Bosterson 25.5 miles 8,500 feet gained 2 nights

Day 1: drove from Portland and hiked into Ice Lake to set up a base camp for some exploring. Day 2: set out off trail heading south up a sketchy scree slope up the side of Craig Mountain, got to a false summit and decided to skip the true summit to leave more time for the Razz Lake exploration. Traversed along the north side of the ridge to a notch that led ...

What an incredible day! Absolutely beautiful, sun blazing, temps comfortable, and no one on the trail. Headed up Park Butte Trail to the upper junction with Scott Paul, doing a clockwise loop. Breathtaking views. Trail is in good shape but there is a challenging water crossing not long after the suspension bridge. Wound up wading across carrying Dibs. Force ...

August 19, 2012 jon 12 miles 5,000 feet gained

A little hazy from the fires to the north, but otherwise great weather and not-so-great scree.

August 19 to August 21, 2012 Nat Turner 7.5 miles 1,750 feet gained 2 nights

Camped near Indian Springs for the weekend, along the road 2 miles above Wathum Lake. Walk to the lake and Swam, hit the summit of Chinidere on Sat afternoon. Best views ever. Bonus Carin and cool rock formations to sit upon. No one else there but us dudes.

August 19, 2012 Roman 9 miles 2,000 feet gained

Started late, and only hiked to the shelter. Flowers are very nice higher on the trail, just notch past their peak. Watched helicopter circling west side of Mt. Hood for over 1.5 hours, then almost landing on Yocum Ridge (there wasn't flat place to land but it spent good 10 minutes hanging just above the ground at one spot). Some hikers mentioned somebody ha...

August 19, 2012 Mileage Mike 8 miles 1,500 feet gained

I don't recommend this hike as the Douglas trail in this area is heavily brushed and grown over. Large amount of blackberries and oregon grape make for a painful experience. Unfortunately, I tripped on a branch beneath the brush and fell. Nothing broken or torn but my knee doesn't feel the best. Couldn't really be avoided as it was a big branch, covered by t...

August 18 to August 19, 2012 Kyle Meyer 5 miles 1,250 feet gained 1 night

Another delightful adventure out to Soda Peaks Lake for swimming. This time I carried out a raft and swam for hours and hours. This lake gets surprisingly warm and it's position at the edge of a ridge gives a consistent wind which eliminates mosquitoes.

August 18, 2012 WildBill9685 2.5 miles 250 feet gained

This is one of the best caves I've been in so far. A bit too busy though. It was a nice trip on a hot day. We took the long route through the caves and it seemed like we were down there forever. I wasn't able to get a lot of pictures, my camera's flash wasn't good enough but it was still an amazing experience.

August 18, 2012 WildBill9685 0.2 miles 250 feet gained

I don't know if it'd really be considered a hike but still awesome stroll up to the top to see the blast zone.

August 18, 2012 Chris 13 miles 2,750 feet gained

Did the loop. Lots of flies out there, but decent fishing. It was nice to have some cooler weather for a change.

August 18, 2012 Stacey 8 miles 2,750 feet gained

Another fantastic day on Mt. Hood! The forecast on Saturday left open the possibility of rain and thunderstorms, so we left the trailhead, with a watchful eye to the sky. As luck would have it, there was only one good and extremely short down pour the entire day; and it occured right after we had ducked into the the Cooper Spur shelter. After the rain ended,...

August 17, 2012 WildBill9685 2 miles 500 feet gained

Nice stroll through lava canyon. Went with a group that had kids so didn't go too far into it. Nice views and the suspension bridge was awesome

August 17, 2012 Stephanie McCloud 4 miles 750 feet gained

Near Pikes Peak in Colorado. Made time for some hiking while we were on our way to Denver for an overnight IKEA run.So glad we did because this was easy with a huge payoff...The perfect combination for hiking at 6 months pregnant. I know we had a view of Pikes Peak throughout most of this hike...but I'm not sure which peak it is! Ha.

August 16 to August 17, 2012 Jack 4 miles 250 feet gained 1 night

Relatively close to home so we decided to beat the heat and head to the Twin lakes for the night to swim and fish. Arrived Thursday and was set up in our lake side site by 1. Expected to see more people, it being so hot, but, we had the entire lake to ourselves w/ the exception of a few day hikers. With our strong desire to hit the water we forgot our poles ...

August 12, 2012 Stacey 10.5 miles 2,250 feet gained

We got a late start on this hike, arriving at the trailhead shortly before noon. I was hoping we'd be able to snag a decent parking spot from one of the backpackers getting off the trail. As luck had it, a truck pulled out of a spot in the top spur TH lot, shortly before we arrived. :) As usual the trail to McNeil point was busy as it usually is on warm week...

August 12, 2012 Mileage Mike 11.9 miles 1,750 feet gained

Actual mileage 11.9 miles, Elevation Gain1805ft It was a beautiful day in Indian Heaven Wilderness. We didn't see many bugs until we got close to Eunice Lake, on the PCT. There is NO snow on the PCT and only small pockets in shady or northern facing slopes! Very few people on any of the trails but the parking lot was full due to campers.

August 11 to August 12, 2012 Water (Matt) 11.5 miles 4,750 feet gained 1 night

cross posted from cascadeclimbers.com First saw this climb in 2008 before I'd done anything more than stuff on the AT or a few Oregon scrambles. Needless to say it stood in my mind as a beacon of climbing aspiration. Having done it I'm sure it was well within my abilities a while ago but it still feels spectacular to accomplish something I'd kind of dreamt a...

August 11 to August 12, 2012 Ken 15.5 miles 5,750 feet gained 1 night

Very hot day. Sun was shining brightly. Trail in decent shape overall but about 3 miles in is very overgrown. Some snow lingers but nothing of note. Only saw 2 people heading out as we headed in. Bugs got more intense once at the ponds. Night was uneventful. Heading out in the morning we saw no one. The heat was incredible. The only breeze was hot. Still, ho...

Beautiful, restorative trip into Siouxon Creek. This place in August is magic. Go to 3 miles up the trail at 3pm for a perfect swimming hole and rocks to jump from. The pool below Siouxon Falls has all the fishes.

August 11 to August 12, 2012 Shane 16 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

Made a quick overnight to Dome camp from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. Feasted on huckleberries and strawberries along the way. Caught a glimpse of about a dozen elk. Watched the Perseid meteor shower until 2:30 in the morning. Hiked back. Good times had by all.

August 11 to August 12, 2012 Roman 12.5 miles 2,500 feet gained 1 night

Sleeping under the sky without a tent & watching Perseid Meteor Shower was awesome! Sorry no night pictures.

August 11, 2012 Chris 11.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

Nice day. Bugs weren't too bad, and the crowds were manageable. The flowers are just about at their peak. Started up the spur a little for a better view.

August 11, 2012 Mileage Mike 14 miles 2,000 feet gained

Exceptional clear day with fantastic coolish weather. We wanted to connect to the Stagman Ridge trail that we had done before. We don't typically do this distance in one day but were feeling great, so we continued to Horseshoe Meadows area for a great view of Mt. Adams! The mosquitos were active above the 5300ft elevation where we first saw snow. Several gro...

August 10, 2012 WildBill9685 14.2 miles 3,500 feet gained

This is by far the most amazing hike I've been on this year. The views of the mountain from Yocum Meadow was by far the best I've seen of the mountain so far. It's a bit long but I think everyone that is able bodied needs to see this.

August 10 to August 11, 2012 Nat Turner 7.5 miles 2,500 feet gained 1 night

Very cool Summit. Abandoned Look Remains, last used in 1967. Land ceded back to Warm Springs tribe. Had to look at old topo's for the trail map. Quads from 1995/2011 do not show the trail. Use the 1986 Quad for Olallie Lake - this one has the trail on it. Pretty Steep - 2500' in three miles. never really lets up. Kinda overgrown for the first mile - It gets ...

We also visited the Springs for the second day in a row. My Dog is way too lucky. (and Tired) Only saw a few big groups out today. Some steady gunfire to the south of Devils Summit, near the end of Multnomah Basin road. I Hope they had a backstop!

August 5, 2012 Ken 15.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Heard the TH was open so headed up with Dibs. A nice day, sunny and hot. Trail was in good shape. Though parking lot was pretty full, saw only a few people and they were all heading back. Made it to Mackinaw shelter without a problem but then the heat and bugs started to get to us so we turned around a little while later. Still, a great day to be outside hik...

August 5, 2012 Mileage Mike 10.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

Actual Mileage 10.4 miles, elevation gain 2421ft Exceptional views on a ridge trail that weaved in and out of viewpoints. Very hot day and the flies wouldn't leave us alone! We went through 5 liters of water and still had to ration. Highly recommended hike but wait for cooler temps!

August 4 to August 9, 2012 Joshua Hudson 60 miles 13,000 feet gained 5 nights

Days after my dad and I did a 36 mile hike up to Mount Olympus last year we started looking into where we would take a multi-day hike this year. We finally settled on a through hike from the Dosewallips washout to the North Fork of the Quinault trail head with a side trip to Lost Pass. This roughly 60 mile route would take us on the following trails (DOSEWAL...

August 4, 2012 WildBill9685 7.3 miles 1,000 feet gained

We managed to pick one of the hotter days of the year but that made the cool area around the falls seem that much better. A lot of people on the trail as well.

August 4 to August 5, 2012 Kyle Meyer 5 miles 1,250 feet gained 1 night

After a wedding at Edgefield, we awoke in Edgefield, enjoyed brunch, and headed out on a hot Saturday to go find some swimming. I managed to fit all of Christy and I's backpacking gear into just my ULA Ohm, so we had a quick (but strenuous) hike into Soda Peaks Lake. Our campsite had a precut pile of wood next to the fire pit (thanks strangers!) so we drank,...
