Did the usual loop around Aldrich Butte and over Cedar summit, and back on PCT & the roads. It was quite windy in places, but we were sheltered by ridges most of the time. Was great to have Pepper back on trail and full of energy, now fully recovered from another surgery.

February 7, 2016 Stacey 20 miles 1,250 feet gained

Gorgeous day for a run on Vernonia-Banks. Headed uphill from Manning to Tophill in the morning fog, then back down the hill to Manning in gorgeous sunshine. Had visions of bacon cheeseburgers as we passed by pasture full of cows, pigs, and chickens. Checked out the train trestles at Tophill and Buxton on the way back to Manning. Then added an extra few miles...

February 7, 2016 Woodswalker 10.8 miles 2,500 feet gained

10 of 10 on the Bluebird scale! Started up the west side of the Hardy ridge trail. We hit snow at about 2300'. There wasn't solid cover, but where there was snow it was almost thigh deep in places. a lot of post holing. As we came out onto Hardy ridge proper, there snow was much less, but it seemed to be sticking in the rock fields. A lot of melting snow cov...

February 6, 2016 Outside + Stuff 8.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

Access roads were all snowed in so we plowed straight up from the exit on I90. Lots of route finding. Here is the video from the trip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIlUcWldf6A

February 6 to February 7, 2016 runandsew 6.5 miles 1,750 feet gained 1 night

Possibly one of the toughest route finding and difficult snow-stepping on the way up. Incredible moring views of Hood and easy hike back to car.

February 6, 2016 B-Dog 2 miles 1,250 feet gained

Decided to get out before the big Super Bowl 50 celebration and get some turns in with my buddy Tyson. Our original plan was to head back towards the Lake Annette area and explore that a little bit further, but when we got to the exit for the trail head it was raining !!! It looked like there was fresh snow on the tree line about 600' above where we would ha...

February 6, 2016 Karl 25.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Weren't sure where we'd end up as we headed east. Made a quick stop at the Balfour-Klickitat walking loop, to see the eagles, but the only ones we saw were flying by as we drove in. After a mile or so of walking around, we decided to head for the eastern end of Swale Canyon, to see what we might. It wasn't an ideal day, in that we mostly lacked the blue skie...

February 6, 2016 Rhonda 26.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

After reading Karl's trip report from a few weeks ago, I just had to get back out here. Yesterday's forecast was partly sunny with no rain and that beat any potential soggy weather on the westside. We got sun in the morning and clouds in early afternoon then back to sunny sky's as the afternoon wore on. Decided once we got to the homestead that I was too clo...

February 2, 2016 Woodswalker 8.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

This is my go to hike for when I want to just wander with no particular goal in mind. It didn't hurt that there was the chance of more clearing to the east. It was cloudy until noon, then the sun burned away the clouds for a stellar view day. I so needed the open vistas and sunshine! No flowers or even buds up above. But so many beautiful creeklets and seeps...

February 1, 2016 Jim 4.5 miles 250 feet gained

Halfway thru an afternoon chasing Chukars, Henry decided to explore the Deschutes Canyon below Macks Canyon by himself and spent a cold night on his own until I could come back the next morning to look for him. The old hunters trick of leaving a piece of clothing in the area worked like a charm as he was laying there at 10am covered in frost sleeping on my o...

January 31, 2016 runandsew 13.5 miles 3,500 feet gained

Snow past 2000'. We packed snow balls down to pass out to needy children on the 11 switchbacks close to the Multnomah Falls Lodge.

January 31, 2016 JM 6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Nice snowshoe hike in a wooded forest, a mix of wide roadbed and narrow trails. A couple of viewpoints, though the mountain didn't quite cooperate. Good snowfall amounts, more than I've seen in years.

January 31, 2016 Roman 8 miles 2,500 feet gained

At last moment's thought I headed to Salmon Butte to see some fresh snow. Was a nice hike for the weather, but I didn't set enough time to make it to the summit (4th Salmon "fail" already - someday I need to plan and get it done). New powder was ~3-4 inches above 2000' and was easy to walk on, but near 4000' I started encountering old snow layer below, and i...

January 31, 2016 Karl 8 miles 750 feet gained

Still seeking hikes out of the rain, we decided to go underground today! Had a lot of fun visiting a place I hadn't been in close to 20 years. Parked out by the "Trail of Two Forests," where the road was gated. Walked in to Ape Cave from there, and had some fun with the Whiskey Jacks near the entrance before taking the plunge in. We ended up going down-cave ...

January 30, 2016 Woodswalker 5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Did a quick out and back, up the Winter climb route from the sno-park to just above where Chocolate Falls would be if it was flowing. We had thought to go up a bit further, or try to make a loop over to June Lake. But the word coming from those descending was that it was deteriorating above. And that there was no track on any of the eastward routes and peopl...

January 24, 2016 Roman 5.93 miles 2,000 feet gained

Having got to upper trail long way in December, now it was much more straightforward ridge walk 500 ft up to intersect it... Turned out upper trail is official and open to motorcycles, (& the whole network of motor trails up on the hill, some still being constructed) - but on this day everything was very quiet. Hiked up trails, then a road, until snow got to...

January 24, 2016 Karl 24 miles 750 feet gained

Got my arm twisted (real hard, I tell ya!), and ended up heading for the desert again last weekend. This time, we decided to simply haul in and out the Deschutes to the old abandoned ranch (or better), and try getting back before dark. Success! Managed to maintain an average 3.4 mph moving pace for the duration. What a beautiful canyon to wander through! Saw...

January 24, 2016 Woodswalker 11.7 miles 2,000 feet gained

At last a little sun and some clouds and just a dash of misty rain. We started at the Wahclella parking lot and took the #400 over to abandoned Tanner creek Rd and down the tanner creek trial. There are now two washouts, on the road section, both easy and tons of down trees, also easy. Water is really flowing and all the seasonal creeks are stunning. Althoug...

January 24, 2016 runandsew 5 miles 2,500 feet gained

Early morning hike on fabulous trails and no rain. Tiny snow falling at the summit.

January 24, 2016 Father Guido Sarducci 9.05 miles 2,250 feet gained

Hiked a bit past Little Ranger Peak. Was going to try to get up the the Boy Scout Shelter but the post holing was getting to deep for the dog. Did not see one single person the entire hike.

January 23 to January 24, 2016 jill 1 miles 0 feet gained 1 night

January 22, 2016 Outside + Stuff 6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Our first snowshoe of the season. Source lake was a bit too easy so we tried to go over the ridge and down to Snow Lake, but we had to turn around due to the conditions. Full video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EJ-72yXk8k

January 22, 2016 Karl 17 miles 4,000 feet gained

Absolutely delightful day out of the doom and gloom of the wet, west side. Blissful blue skies and temps in the mid-60s led us to linger much of the day, while just meandering all about the syncline. Mountainkat and I started the day by wandering up alongside Coyote Wall; the clouds lifted as we climbed. Cut east from the top, and ran into what (to me was) a...

January 18, 2016 Karl 7.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

We were all entirely frustrated with the wet side, so we went for (what we hoped would be) a nice walk in the rain shadow! The landscape was truly magnificent. So pleasant to be hiking without a jacket, again, too. The one thing we didn't count on was just how incredibly muddy the supersaturated soils would be. I'm sure we were hauling up to 20 pounds of cla...

January 17, 2016 Karl 7.5 miles 250 feet gained

Escaped for a quick eight-mile jaunt up and down the greenbelt with Harleigh and NO RAIN this evening! What a treat.

January 15, 2016 Woodswalker 9 miles 1,500 feet gained

Forecast was mostly dry, so I went out to the gorge. I wanted to add a bit of newness to a route I had done many times. So I started at Multnomah Falls and took the #400 trail over the Oneonta Trail. Big but safe washout on the 400. Lots of new waterfalls in the distance I had never seen and even a stone foundation left over from the days when there were mor...

January 10, 2016 Roman 7 miles 0 feet gained

Family hike on the coast. We planned to go to Arcadia Beach, but couldn't get around rocks due high tide. Instead added a shorter hike across Ecola Creek, north to Bird Rocks. At some point in early afternoon it was warm enough to wear a T shirt - almost felt like summer.

January 10, 2016 JM 5.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

An incredibly beautiful day snowshoeing the slopes of Mt Rainier. We traveled up to Panorama Pt, then beyond to a traverse below McClure Rock and into a large bowl east of Paradise. Conditions were pretty much perfect, even a bit warm. Hard crust on top of powder, avalanche danger was moderate.
