July 20, 2012 Kam Pierce 10 miles 1,000 feet gained

The clouds never burned off. Still a beautiful hike filled with wonderful wildflower displays and some canyon views. Also quite a bit of solitude.

July 18 to July 20, 2012 Jen 10 miles 1,500 feet gained 2 nights

I had a short few days in Colorado and met up with my sister in law from Brooklyn to take the kids ( ages 9,11 and 13) backpacking in RMNP. We had Gem Lake in mind, but the closest camping spot was McGregor Mountain. The kids had a blast.

July 18 to July 19, 2012 RenegadePilgrim 7 miles 2,750 feet gained 1 night

A friend of mine asked me to join her on this hike and I jumped at the chance to get up on the East side of Mt. Hood for a hike. I've heard this one was a lot of fun and we were not disappointed! We headed out on Wednesday and parked our vehicles by the Cloud Cap Inn, where I hear the Crag Rats use it as a SAR base during SAR operations. The parking lot has ...

July 17, 2012 Randy Frost 15 miles 3,000 feet gained

We did this hike last summer but instead of going up Huffman trail we went up Wildcat Trail and down Chinook. There was not much of a view on top of Siouxon because of cloud cover. We didn't see another soul until after the creek ford at Wildcat falls and back onto Siouxon Creek Trail.

July 16 to July 20, 2012 Nick of the woods 1 miles 0 feet gained 4 nights

My girlfriend and I just moved across the state from the Kenosha and Milwaukee area to Sparta, WI and needed a break from unpacking. We spent a few days canoeing and hiking around family property in the great north woods of Wisconsin. We also brought our hammocks and field tested some some ziplock bag cooking in my new DIY reflectix pouch. Weather was HOT an...

July 16, 2012 Mileage Mike 10.7 miles 2,500 feet gained

Actual mileage 10.7miles, elevation gain 2424ft using Topofusion software You just can't go wrong with the Lewis River Trail! It was a perfect sunny day with great views. It turned a bit warm at the end of the day but a few breezes cooled us down. This hike allowed us to complete the entire Lewis River trail system over a few year period. It appears the shor...

July 15, 2012 Water (Matt) 12 miles 6,750 feet gained

Finally managed to Ski the SW Chutes. Next time will go earlier in the year. Thousands of feet of vert on nice corn snow. Pics later.

July 15, 2012 Chris 22.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Even with so-so weather, this ended up being a nice day hike. I took the longish ride up to Wahtum Lake to see how many small peaks I could cover in a day. Not getting there until 10:30 or so, I had my work cut out for me. First was Indian Mountain. I decided to walk the back road over to the PCT and then head up the short cut toward the little peak, but hea...

July 15, 2012 Father Guido Sarducci 7.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

Began the hike @ the Little Quilcene Trail #835. Was hoping the peaks elevation, a bit over 6200', would break us out of the stubborn low cloud cover and drizzle but it was not to be on this day. If fact the higher we climbed the denser the cloud cover became. Trail is in good condition and free of snow.

July 15, 2012 Mileage Mike 9.3 miles 1,750 feet gained

Actual mileage 9.3miles, elevation 1681ft I don't know how everyone is calculating "Rough Elevation" but I had been using the formula Max elevation - Min elevation. I will be correcting all my hikes for total elevation as this is a better assessment of how difficult the trail is. I think I've been shorting my elevation gain by using the old method as this hi...

July 14, 2012 Ken 10.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Hiked with my dog, a 12yo. No bugs. Just a pleasant day hike through forest, some open areas, and along a creek in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Only encountered a few other hikers. A nice easy hike to stay cool on a hot July day.

July 14, 2012 Bosterson 32 miles 7,000 feet gained

Got to together with a group of PH dudes and hiked the Loowit Trail around St. Helens in one day. Started at June Lake and went counter-clockwise - next time I'd do the reverse, because the last 6 miles or so, crossing the lava above Climber's Bivouac and Worm Flows, took foreeeever. A little under 15 hours total - slowed down greatly for the last few miles....

July 14, 2012 Roman 9 miles 1,250 feet gained

Due to T-storm forecast I thought a canyon trip is in order. Salmon River hike to canyon overlook was beautiful as always, but this time I came with a good topo map to try and find a good viewpoint(s) of the three waterfalls directly below the overlook. Only one of them is visible from the trail if you watch for it, far below and far away. Anyway, I forgot t...

July 13 to July 15, 2012 Jon Sommerville 20 miles 5,000 feet gained 2 nights

I write this trip report with great relief. The lakes were remarkably serene and gave off a naturally high-contrast visual that reminded me of Instagram's Lo-Fi filter. But....it's a month or two too early to make this a casual backpacking trip, as I found out the hard way. To give you some background, my 16 year old sister-in-law, Malinda, is visiting Portl...

July 13 to July 14, 2012 Kam Pierce 7 miles 3,750 feet gained 1 night

Left Cold Springs TH @7:30p and arrived at the Lunch Counter @1:30a. With my asthma acting up and exhaustion, I opted to sleep and decide about summiting in the morning. With the ominous clouds and hail shower, I decided to hang out and enjoy watching the cloudscapes and climbers. Beautiful night on Mt. Adams!

July 13, 2012 Jen 10.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

I headed out to Elk Meadows on a gorgeous summer day. No bugs and I had the place to myself. Afterwards I headed up the Gnarl Ridge trail and turned west on the Timberline Trail. I didn't run into any snow until the Clark Creek Canyon. This creek bottom is beautiful with several waterfalls. Climbing up out of there was tricky with several steep snowfield tra...

July 10, 2012 Father Guido Sarducci 4 miles 1,750 feet gained

Hiked up to Poo Poo Point via the Chirico Trail. Short hike but with a fair amount of elevation gain. A bit hazy @ the top which I was told was a result of some big fires somewhere in Asia. Many paragliders were being launched taking advantage of the weather conditions. Unfortunately forgot the camera.

July 8, 2012 Ken 13 miles 2,250 feet gained

A beautiful day. Headed out mid=afternoon, hoping to beat the crowds, but I was wrong. Felt like I was back in NYC at Grand Central Station during the evening commute. Fortunately, once we passed the mine, the trail was ours. The rhodies and a deer on the trail made the crowds more bearable but this is probably a trip best saved for an off-season weekday.

July 8, 2012 Mileage Mike 10.1 miles 1,250 feet gained

Actual mileage 10.1miles, elevation gain 1234ft (corrected with gpsfly) It was a hot day but there was still a large amount of snow on the north slopes of the mts and in the depressions. The area with snow offered a very cool climate that was refreshing. Indian Heaven Wilderness is still snowed in at the northern border (4ft) and the trail is almost complete...

July 8, 2012 Mike Simmons 3 miles 0 feet gained

Nice little walk, didn't use my GPS, but CVNP lists it at 3.1 miles, 80 ft elevation change. It also says 2 hours, but I did it in under 1.

July 7 to July 8, 2012 Joshua Hudson 20 miles 4,750 feet gained 1 night

Took advantage of the amazing weather this last weekend to do a overnight backpacking trip with my dad up to FlapJack lakes in the Olympic National Park. The first 3.5 miles up the North Fork Skokomish River Trail are nice and flat. At 3.5 miles you take a right and hike a pretty steep 4 mile climb (with the steepest part coming the last 1/2 mile) to the Fla...

July 7 to July 9, 2012 jon 14 miles 8,000 feet gained 2 nights

I took a three day skills course with a buddy on Mount Baker, on what turned out to be a great weather weekend. Our group made two camps, the first under the trees at around 4500', which was nice because it had a vault toilet and we could get out of the sun. The second night was at 6000' on the Coleman glacier. All three days were quite busy with little down...

July 7, 2012 Bosterson 13 miles 5,500 feet gained

Drove out Friday after work and hit the trail at 11pm, aiming to catch the sunrise from the summit. Sadly, because of delays due to one member of the group not feeling well and another member opting to stop and take a bivy nap along the way, three of the four of us were at Lewis Tarn when the sun came up. I reached the summit at 7am and Joe about 20 minutes ...

July 7, 2012 Mileage Mike 8.9 miles 1,500 feet gained

Actual mileage 8.9miles, elevation gain 1476ft (corrected with gpsfly) Hot day but it was only mildly warm at the 4400ft level of the PCT above Lost Lake. Glacial lilies were in profusion! No hikers on trail at all even though the Lake was overcrowded!

July 7, 2012 Father Guido Sarducci 8.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

Plan was to hike up Mt. Teneriffe but got side tracked exploring some side trails and ended up just hiking as far as the falls.

July 6, 2012 Josh Mayer 1.5 miles 0 feet gained

In tiny town in Chinese countryside hiked with girlfriend. Walked the dirt paths going through all the little farms on terraced hillsides with rice paddies and a resevoir below.

July 6, 2012 Jen 8.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Went via the Bluff Mountain Trail. Widlfowers are starting to put on a big show!

July 6 to July 7, 2012 Kam Pierce 12 miles 5,000 feet gained 1 night

hit the trail @11p on friday night and reached the summit just before high noon. ideal conditions, though i would have appreciated a few more clouds to block the sun. the exposure and reflection off the snow on the descent was punishing. got back to the TH at ~5p. EIGHTEEN hours on the trail (including a 2.5 hr nap).

July 6, 2012 Mileage Mike 11.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Actual mileage 11.5miles, elevation gain 3178ft (corrected with gpsfly) We hiked a loop starting at the Monte Carlo #53 trail and going clockwise around the Buck Creek Loop trail and back down the Monte Carlo #52 trail. We then hiked back to our car along the Oklahoma Road. It was a hot day but there were still plenty of breezes to cool us down! However, we ...

July 6, 2012 Jack 6 miles 3,000 feet gained

Another Dog Mtn hike report. Beautiful day for hiking. Looped it, up the dog mtn trail, down asgspurger. Roughly 5 hours of hiking which we felt, Zacharoo and I, pretty good about as this was our most challenging hike to date. (we're getting ready for ya kyle) Awesome views of the gorge, east and west. What a wonderful place we live in, yes? Left my trekking...

July 5 to July 6, 2012 Barnaby B. 4 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

Went camping with the wife after a trip through LA. Breath-taking views over the cliff, over San Bernardino valley. The hiking is so-so, the real amazing part is the drive up here. The air is nice and clean too. Even though she hates camping. She was pleased with the quality of the restrooms.

July 5 to July 6, 2012 Kyle Meyer 11 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

This was predominantly a fly fishing mission. My friend Nick just acquired a fly rod and wanted to learn how to flail his arms about, recite some incantations and reel a fish in with it. It was so warm and beautiful that we swam quite a bit too! The fishing was nonexistent where we camped at the confluence of Opal Creek and a side creek at the end of the tra...

July 5, 2012 Nat Turner 5.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Awesome spot. It was made even better by the root gully, nearly vertical, exposed, class 3/4 amazing climb to the mouth of the upper falls. The route is left side, looking from the bottom, and allows exploration of all the tiers from the basalt shelves. It does not seem doable from the bottom, the consequences are severe, PH never mentions the option and I wo...
