February 1, 2014 Pablo Benson Ruckel 11 miles 4,500 feet gained

Started from Eagle Creek, went over to Cascade Locks and hopped on the PCT. On up Rudolph, did not take the trail after the 2700' viewpoint but continued following the ridge - great views along this route. A couple of hikers ahead of me (never saw them) broke trail heading towards the Benson Platter through the 2-3 inches of snow . Returned on Ruckel Creek T...

January 31, 2014 acorn woodpecker Greenleaf Basin 10 miles 2,500 feet gained

Pretty wet day. Went up Two Chiefs Trail with the intent of hitting Greenleaf Peak, but knew I didn't have enough time so I hoped to explore Greenleaf Basin instead. Greenleaf Creek was raging and a crossing looked unappealing. Stayed on the west side of the creek and shwacked up steep muddy deer trails to the notch where Upper Greenleaf Falls cascades down....

January 31, 2014 Team Reynolds Bloom Lake 3 miles 500 feet gained

About 600 ft up the trail is this very pretty secluded lake with an awesome log bridge across the water outlet. Nice banks for having a break or sitting in the sun. It would be beautiful in summer, but for us it rained and hailed and was generally more challenging. Want to explore the main trail more as it goes much further.

January 31, 2014 Team Reynolds South Fork Rock Creek 1 miles 250 feet gained

Leaving from the Sunset rest area this short trail climbs a bit up the hill in two connected loops and teaches some local history. Lots of nice old growth stumps... I like them better as trees.

January 31, 2014 Team Reynolds North Fork Wolf Creek 2 miles 250 feet gained

Short hike with low elevation gain to a very nice marble marker, stand in four counties at the same time. Did it...

January 29, 2014 Lekilei253 Angels Rest 3 miles 1,000 feet gained

Did some exploring today with a couple new hiking buddies. Went off trail to Upper Bridal Veil falls, steep and muddy but amazing to see. Then over to Wahkeena and explored the lost trail to see Neck Tie falls and the view over Wahkeena.

January 29, 2014 Pablo Marquam Gulch 1 miles 500 feet gained

I stepped out of the cubicle and avoided capture in order to go on a mud stomping excursion into the woods. Down Conner, up Marquam Trail to cross the rd, back up Towhee Trail to Fairmont and back. Nice signage for the time being, hope it lasts.

January 27, 2014 Elsie Ramona Falls 15 miles 3,500 feet gained

Went out with a couple girlfriends to make our way up yocum ridge. Road, parking lot, and first 6 miles of the trail was free of snow. Icy on the lower Ramona trail. Came just short of the ultimate desinate - may have ended up a bit higher than we wanted. good views. Crossed the Sandy on a log about 75 yards down stream.

January 27, 2014 ADB Foots Creek 3 miles 500 feet gained

Rain

January 27, 2014 Jen South Breitenbush Gorge 7.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

A warm cozy night in the cabin,a relaxing morning soak in the hot springs, and an invigorating hike up Devils Ridge, Heaven! Multiple loop options in the area, this one had a beautiful lush forest at the lower elevations, followed by a steep Ruckelish climb(but shorter). Then a long forested ridgewalk to the summit with several rock outcroppings for views, a...

January 26, 2014 Team Reynolds Hannum Spring 6 miles 2,000 feet gained

An excellent hike up Tilly Jane ski trail to the Tilly Jane A-Frame hut and Amphitheater, up along the Timberline trail to the Polallie canyon trail and back down to Cooper Spur ski resort. The hike along Polallie canyon is particularly beautiful and the waterfall can be seen from the top of the ski runs looking back up the canyon. A tiring but excellent wil...

January 26, 2014 Allison Birth Of A Lake 16 miles 3,750 feet gained

A glorious circuit over mixed terrain (mostly snow/ice above 4,000') from the Hummocks, past Coldwater Lake, under the brow of Coldwater Peak, up to the saddle for a look-see at St. Helens Lake and Large Marge, down to scare some elk to the Boundary Trail, rambling along the JRO ridge back down to the Hummocks. It was a short sleeve and SPF 50 kind of day. C...

January 26, 2014 Karl Coldwater Peak 16.5 miles 3,750 feet gained

Magical day in the blast zone! We followed South Coldwater Ridge up to the saddle over Saint Helens Lake, where we enjoyed lunch with an absolutely priceless view. Then found our way down a forbidden valley towards Harry's Ridge, made possible by nearly complete snow cover. We finally made our way over to Johnston Ridge Observatory, then down that ridge and ...

January 26, 2014 Jen Devils Peak 6.5 miles 500 feet gained

A friend volunteers here and invited me down as her guest. While she sat in meetings at the lodge, I soaked and hiked!

January 26, 2014 Stacey Jackson Creek 9.5 miles 2,250 feet gained

Headed out to the coast yesterday to enjoy warm temperatures, sunshine and run the Cape Lookout Trail. Started at the North Trail, where we discovered signage marking the North Trail as closed. There was no information provided regarding when the trail will be reopened, but it appears that the log bridge over Cape Creek is being replaced by a suspension brid...

January 26, 2014 Father Guido Sarducci The Brothers 14.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Hiked to Lower Lena Lake, through The Valley of the Silent Men and approx. 1 mile past the Brothers base camp to the base of The Brothers. Trail is completely free of snow.

January 26, 2014 Bosterson Multnomah Falls 4.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Due to a late start and some serious Gorge wind, Elsie and I bailed on plans to do Munra and instead zipped over to Perdition. Everything in the Gorge where there's water is covered in frost or ice - the bridge below Wahkeena Falls was an ice rink, and many portions of the "trail" later had frozen ground and ice baubles hanging from sticks near creeks. As a ...

January 26, 2014 Chris Marble Mountain 13.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

After several weeks of scrapped hikes due to some overambitious snow depth estimates and rockfall blocking roads, I finally got in a nice hike today! Up to Marble Rim—not quite to the top, but high enough for the views. I was contemplating going over to Sky High Lakes but the snow got deep on the trail, it was about 3 snow-covered miles round trip and I woul...

January 26, 2014 Pablo Warren Lake 9.5 miles 4,250 feet gained

Went up Starvation Ridge to Warren Lake, return on Defiance Trail. Upside-down temperature gradient as usual. Did not take spikes - might have used them but I did not slip or fall anyway - Starvation Ridge was worse for ice than Defiance Trail.

January 26, 2014 Mileage Mike Mount Molly 9.6 miles 1,500 feet gained

A gorgeous day with NO people on the trail! There were a few areas that were quite muddy and like walking on jello. One area had a stellar view of Mt. Rainier, and we could also see the tip of Mt. Adams! We started on the Waddle Basin Trail and ended up at the Divide Trail. This forest has a huge trail system, but it's shared with bikes and ATV's. Fortunatel...

January 26, 2014 Nat Turner Sherrard Point 8.21 miles 2,000 feet gained

Parked at the Snow Gate, never seen so many cars there. Must have been twenty of em. Up the road to FS 315, the over to the Larch Mt trailmup the ridgeline to Sherrad Point. Great short snowshoe. Headed up towards Silcox Hut then cut over to the rim of White River canyon.

January 25, 2014 JM South Fork Wilson River 11.5 miles 3,750 feet gained

Gorgeous winter day, started out @ 9am at the gated road. 25 degrees at the start of the hike and by the time we reached the summit of Kings 4 hours later it was near 60. Very slow going initially due to steepness of the trail. Loved every minute of it! Good company w/ Rich & Bhaskar. High tailed-it home in time for a party in the evening.

January 25, 2014 Jen Guild Lake (historical) 4 miles 250 feet gained

morning jaunt in the woods

January 25, 2014 Jen Gumjuwac 8 miles 1,000 feet gained

Working on my skiing skills, very busy here today. Snow is bleak but the weather was fantastic.

January 25, 2014 Mileage Mike Smith Creek 11.3 miles 1,500 feet gained

Felt more like summer than winter! Only saw one group of people during the entire hike! Plenty of old growth, and the trail was plenty wet despite the lack of rain. We took the Buck Creek Trail out to the Perimeter Trail and then closed the loop on the Rackett Ridge Trail for the return. We also explored a couple other roads that looked of interest. Great da...

January 25, 2014 Pablo Little Beacon Rock 8 miles 2,500 feet gained

Standard loop hike up Hamilton. I was only asked to take one photo at the summit and only one group asked how to get back to the trail head. Another notch in my Discover Pass. Usually I do Beacon when I do Hamilton but it was too cold and windy.

January 24, 2014 acorn woodpecker Tanner Butte 19 miles 5,250 feet gained

Dry day with an inversion in the Gorge as well as strong east winds. Took advantage of the low snow pack and attempted Tanner Butte. Eagle Creek trail to 4.5 Mile Bridge. Off trailed to cross Tenas Creek and ascend the ridge separating it and Opal Creek. Beautiful scrambly knife ridge on the lower stretches that actually requires route finding. From 2500 ft ...

January 24, 2014 Allison Cape Horn 8 miles 1,500 feet gained

Snuck in this hike after coming off Cedar Mountain and finding a text message that relieved me of my city duties. This is the first time I've done the whole loop. The lower section is vastly more interesting than the upper section, especially with the 100 MPH wind gusts. I was (literally) blown away.

January 24, 2014 Allison Table Mountain 9 miles 2,500 feet gained

Checking out some of Don Nelsen's "trails" in the Table Mountain complex. Started at Aldrich Butte, and went clockwise to Cedar Mountain, up and over to the saddle, and then down to Hamilton Creek on a nice connector trail. Back to Aldrich Butte clockwise, making a miss-shapen figure eight around Cedar Mountain and Aldrich Butte.

January 24, 2014 ADB Little Savage Creek 3 miles 500 feet gained

January 24, 2014 Karl Cape Horn 7 miles 2,000 feet gained

Had some extra time, so we did a quick loop of Cape Horn, in hurricane force gusts, before the annual Falcon closure kicks in on February 1.

January 24, 2014 Karl Carpenters Lake 8.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

Really fun loop up and over Cedar Mountain, then wandering around in the woods north of it before descending along the Hamilton Creek drainage. Only gone down Cedar before. Going up was an eye-opener, with the initial push of nearly 1000' EG in just over a 1/2 mile! Ai yi yi... :-)

January 22, 2014 Team Reynolds Crampton Reservoir 9 miles 1,000 feet gained

This was another excellent Park exploration hike. Saw multiple species of squirrels, Woodpeckers, Deer, and Kinglets. Beautiful hike around the meadow and along the river.

January 21, 2014 Allison Table Mountain 10.5 miles 4,000 feet gained

A classic figure 8 loop: up Cedar Mountain to the PCT, up Westway Ridge to Table's summit, descend on Table's north ridge to the PCT for a return to the TH. Sunny in PDX, cloudy and VERY WINDY in the Gorge. Once we climbed above the inversion layer, it got warmer and calmer, giving us a front seat row to the crazy weather brewing in the eastern Gorge. Beauti...

January 20, 2014 Pablo Munra Point 13 miles 4,500 feet gained

Loop hike up Munra Point and return on Wauneka Point east route. Parked at the state fish hatchery as I'm too paranoid to park anywhere else. Wauneka Point was socked in, bummer.

January 20, 2014 Allison Old Salmon River 5.5 miles 0 feet gained

Leisurely afternoon hike along the Salmon River with out-of-town friends. Saw many hipsters.

January 20, 2014 Karl Lamberson Butte 8 miles 2,000 feet gained

Snowshoed in from Hood River Meadows. Followed the Elk Meadows trail to the Newton Creek junction, and were pretty much off-trail from there on. We followed the canyon, or actually the ridge directly west of it, to the Timberline Trail. From there, traversed over to the next ridge to our west, and climbed up that to a nice lunchspot view above the trees. The...

January 20, 2014 Nat Turner Confluence 4.5 miles 0 feet gained

Geared up for Larch Mt from the Gate, but the Wind was gusting so hard [100mph] I worried about tree blowdown on the 10 miles of road before the gate. Did not want to get stuck up there alone. As if to confirm my fears, the Historic Hwy was blocked by downed trees soon after. Fail. Retreat towards Troutdale. Plan B was Sandy river Delta. The pup enjoyed it. ...

January 19, 2014 ADB Sparrowhawk Creek 6 miles 500 feet gained

Rogue River hike, foggy and cold.

January 19, 2014 Mileage Mike Coyote Wall 9.4 miles 1,750 feet gained

Well, I heard it was sunny in the Portland area most of the day, but not at Coyote Wall! We pretty much spent the day in freezing fog, and the high temperature, when we got back to the car was 32deg! Only saw three mountain bikers, at the beginning of the day, and a couple of hikers 100ft away. We spent the day exploring the many trails/roads north of the Co...
