B-Dog dragged me up here for a little pre-season snowshoeing, but the trail is popular with cross-country skiers with bladder control issues. We hiked back to Source Lake - a little, half-frozen booger of a pond - and then decided to head up onto the ridge for a look at Snow Lake. The snow was like concrete on the ascent, so I made like I was running out of ...

Nice early season trip with TAH. Took advantage of the high pressure and inversion that set in for almost 10 days. Very cold and icy in the morning, but the higher we went the warmer it got. Snow was bullet proof and made for quick travel. Really low snow levels this year.

Another botched attempt due to snow. Was going to go up to Duck Lake but the snow became several inches deep and more work than fun. A nice day, though. I'm excited to get back to this area, though.

Looking for a shortcut from Wahclella TH to the 777 rd. Got to the 777 road and went on up the powerline access road to the ridge going south. Landed on the Wauna Pt trail to return on Tanner Butte. The shortcut was more interesting than the 400 but not as fast in spite of the 400's long switchbacks. There's another route to explore from near the flume above...

Introduced a good friend to Silver Star on Saturday, hitting the summit a couple times, in between forays onto different ridges radiating outward from it. Incredibly little snow given it's already mid-January! Roads to all trailheads were clear. No need at all for spikes or snowshoes. Amazing.

Gorgeous day with nobody seen the entire day except for the last mile of the hike, and then a huge number of people. The parking are was full when we returned! We hiked down Multnomah Basin Rd. and intersected the Larch Mt. Trail. We ended up roaming around, and intersected the Franklin Ridge Trail. We also made a small loop of the Highwater trail and the lo...

Myself and three friends went for a four-day weekend down to Trinity Alps Wilderness. While we found a bit more wintery of conditions than we expected, it was still gloriously warm and sunny while we were out there and there was very little snow.

Hiked the PCT from Cascade Locks to Dry Creek, then to Herman Creek and set up camp. Next day we hiked up Nick Eaton Ridge and over to Indian Point. The area at Indian Point was a surprising cold micro-climate completely covered in thick white frost. Beautiful glittering ice covered everything from trees to rocks, and it ended abruptly. Sun with cool tempera...

Each time I hike this trail, a little chunk of fun has been removed. No more roots, rocks, walking under waterfalls, crossing treacherous gulleys, peering over RR tunnel, crossing the road. 6 months off limits. I hear the scree field is going next.

Reserved the A-Frame with a crew. 12 strong, we brought the party. Splitboards, Snowshoes, Crampons, Crosscountry, it seemed everyone was representing. Turns above the cabin, and traverses over to Cloud Cap, where I saw Saddle Mt, 125 miles away in the coast range. Rockfall in the Elliot, and amazing inversions under a blood red full moon. Headlamp snow hiki...

A short but incredibly great way to spend an inversion day on Mt. Hood. Snowshoed from the HRM lot, across Clark Creek (sketchy snow bridge), and then cross-country up the ridgeline, basically following the Wilderness boundary. This is like Gnarl Ridge but shorter and much narrower.

Amazing undulating Park hike and could have been extended to 14 miles if we had the time. Nice traverse between different sides of the park and the bat barn was cool protecting a rare bat species. Wide open and lots of views.

Intended to hike to Table Mountain via Cedar Mountain. Instead, hiked to Cedar Falls and then got turned around and ended up hiking along Hamilton Creek for about three miles. Tried to chase the sun and get out of our gloomy weather - stayed dry, but no chance of a tan to be had. Went out to the old broken down homestead at mile 11 and back on the bike path. Legs hurt. Gravel does not make soft ground for hiking. Saw a herd of about 20 deer. Glad for the day.

No worries, we headed back and had beers in Hood River. Side note: 10 dead Mallards at the trailhead right by the cars. Shot, breasts removed, carcass chucked out by the trucks. Did a real fun loop up that started up Catherine Creek, but then went right and followed Tracy Hill almost to the top. We kept heading west, before descending down another game trail towar...

This area is just plain fun on those stormy days when you want to avoid the torrential downpours. From Aldrich TH, went around Aldrich West trail, dropped into Cedar Creek drainage and climbed Cedar Mt. The forecast called for doom and gloom. What better excuse to head into an old-growth rain forest? It turned out to be a simply fantastic day! We hiked until we figured about half our daylight was gone, then turned around and came back out. This place is really hard to find, but worth it. Wonderful first trip up to Tanner Butte, with a whole slew of PortlandHikers folk. Two big takeaway impressions: a) Beargrass alley is vastly more significant than any trip reports or photos ever convey! b) I don't think there's an easier 4500' descent anywhere in the gorge.
