I had hoped for some hiking in the Olympic mountains but, every area seemed socked in with dense clouds. So, I opted to hike the Dungeness Spit. It was a nice and quite long, beach hike. I made it to the lighthouse and walked to the top of it. I saw a few shorebirds, including a pair of black oystercatchers.

I got to hike solo this weekend as my wife visited her parents. I tend to stay close to home since I'm doing the driving (my wife drives on weekends as I put in 400 miles/week to get to work). The weather was quite a bit cooler than expected, but I was well prepared for the wind and drizzle. Parking at the horse camp, I hiked the longest path I knew to the s...

My best friend wanted to go on a hike with me and I thought a Multnomah loop out to Nesika would be the perfect hike to introduce her to the world of hiking. Nesika was opened up and the people up there were wonderful! They fed us yummy goodies and warm drinks and sent us out to the lookout to enjoy them. The trails weren't terribly crowded for once, always ...

I had hoped to go further to Van Trump Park, but the fog was out and it was dense. I couldn't see much of the upper tier of Comet Falls practically standing next to it.

I guess there's no more snow in Clark County! Exhausted from a recent trip, I had only gumption for a quick run up and down the backyard valley. Water levels in Salmon Creek are at late-June to mid-July levels. It's nuts. The hunting grounds for the herons have shrunk considerably, so we saw many more than usual.

Just a short hike with a good friend to take some flower shots. The Balsam is done down below but the various Buckwheats are going strong and we saw some things that neither of us had seen before.

Did a sunset/night hike at Powell Butte with the fellow bird surveyors to turn in paperwork and see if we'd spot any owls. No owl sightings were had but the night was beautiful and there was no moon in the sky. However, there were plenty of deer and a couple coyotes howling. Nice change of pace at a familiar spot.

!st visit to the Wallowas. Too much snow above 7500' and ticks were out in force. Most trails are graded for horses with long, long switchbacks and tread covered in a layer of horse poop (aren't horse people supposed to clean this stuff up?). I'm going to purchase the Barstad Eagle Cap Wilderness book and do hikes that avoid this unpleasantness. Magnificent ...

I had a great time hiking from JRO to Coldwater Peak on Sunday. I appreciated the high clouds that kept it cool and breezy. I saw just a few people, and most of them were not past Harry's Saddle. I saw no one past Rock Arch Saddle and I had the peak to myself. I was surprised to see western pasqueflowers blooming along the trail up Coldwater Peak. Those are ...

1st visit to the Wallowas - did two hikes the first day - one off Bear Creek Trail and another from the Lostine River in the direction of Francis Lake. These 2 hikes were more to get acquainted with roads and trailheads. Important lesson learned, this is tick season in the Wallowas and trails graded for horses are no fun to hike. Live and learn...

A somewhat nice ending to an absolutely HORRIBLE day! We had originally decided on hiking to Red Mt., in Indian Heaven, at the beginning of the day. We were going to start at the Falls Creek Horse Camp off of NF65. When we were about 1/2 mile from the destination, my wife complained that she was pressing down on the gas pedal but the car wasn't accelerating....

Just a really nice day in the woods, with a special treat on top. Fair warning to any considering this one -- the mosquitoes are hatched and hungry in Indian Heaven, while the frogs are still in their early tadpole state. Not a good combo. A little DEET will do ya, but you could be miserable without. Did an in/out on the PCT from Crest Camp trailhead. Very n...

We needed a hike close to home so we could get back for a family gathering. We went on this hike with two of our sons. The parking area was packed and the trail system full of hikers. I would have like to summit Hamilton Mt. but they weren't up to it, so we hiked the Hardy Creek trail to the picnic area, and then returned. Gorgeous sunny day and a fun time w...

The only other time I hiked this trail a few years ago, someone had just broken into some cars right before we arrived at the trailhead. Thankfully, nothing like that occurred this time. The waterfall is still so wonderful and the forest is lovely, but, to be honest, the hike is a little boring. Next time I visit, I'll go on to Yocum Ridge.

After work bike n hike w/ Johnny. We dropped bikes off at Old Baldy TH, drove down and parked at one of the upper Fanton crossings; then hiked up to Tumala (Squaw) Mtn. Returned to NW Pa for a brief visit and managed to spend a day exploring places I haven't seen in decades. After starting in the wrong drainage, we eventually found the old steam locomotive and Pinchot road remnants I had found years ago. Nice to visit home even if I haven't lived there for 25 years.

Took my old hiking buddy -- a 50# bag of sand -- out for a walk before work. He's not much for conversation. And, he just sits there expecting to be carried everywhere. When it comes to testing out new packs, though, he's an expert.

Left the city late, arriving at the trailhead after 3pm, and still there were 60 cars already there. On a weekday! Ran into a fellow PHer on the way up, and chatted a bit, then continued on. Ended up having the summit all to myself, despite back-and-forthing with a few folks along the way. Not that most would want to hang out up there that day. Gale force wi...

Short jaunt to explore the area of the Ball Creek fire. Having watched it burn from Flag Point lookout I was amazed at how much survived and regrew. Balsam is about a week from peak, Lupines are full on and the area is still in the brief flush of spring green. Such great views everywhere. Because of the haze it was hard to capture all the amazing views.

full monty this time. skied from the summit proper, actually really excellent down to pikers. My wife, Bucket, also went with, but topped out at Pikers with partner Ian. This was an incomplete hike. I started late, and I had planned to at least make it Warren Lake. My husband has an injury that will keep him from hiking for a while, so I was out by myself. Sometimes the long forest hikes are challenging for me solo. That was the case on this day and I lost my motivation about 2.5 miles up the trail. It was not my day, but, I...

A good cool-down hike after Table Mt. the day before. Good training for Zion this summer-feeling ready. Took some friends up the hill for the great views, which never disappoint. Heavy trail traffic coming down confirmed that an early start is always better, especially in the Gorge.

We haven't been on this trail for years, and decided to head out and see Jackpot Meadows! There's several trees across the trail but nothing that would slow you down. Big loop in Bull of the Woods up and around Mother Lode to the lookout and then a camp at lower Welcome Lake. For some reason, I expected much of this area to have been showing some signs of recovery but I was very wrong. The fire burned the earth deep and it is very much still a hellscape around the Welcome Lakes.
