It's been wonderful two days exploring area around two of Boulder Lakes, before mosquitoes start in honest. Almost no snow, though it looked it was a lot more prior week. Only saw 2-3 mosquitoes each evening so the timing was right (also a "pet" deer visited us in camp and waited for handouts, but finally gave up). It was so nice down at Boulder Lake I almos...

Awesome tough hike up Table Mt. this past weekend. Plenty of sweeping views once getting off Heartbreak Ridge and through the rock field. Took the N ridge route back down, which opened us up to Rainer, St. Helens and Adams. Tip of Jefferson peaked out at is during lunch which, when combined with Hood, made this a 5 peak day. Fantastic!

Perfect sunny day with a light breeze. We've done this hike twice before under very different conditions. First time was March 2008, there was lots of snow and we followed the only set of boot tracks we saw which took us up a very steep direct route to the summit. The next time we did this hike was August 2009. This time it was snow free and we could follow ...

Not a hike, per se. Volunteered to join the search for Gerren Kirk, a hiker who went missing last December. Spent the day bushwacking through brutral underbrush in our assigned search area, and in the process made some new friends.

This was actually two different hikes in Capitol State Forest. We ended up at the wrong TH and just hiked at the North Creek TH. Unfortunately, there was gun fire just below the trail and so we turned around! The second hike was at the Mima Falls West Trail. It was a gorgeous day and we had a great view of Mt. Rainier from the Mima Falls trail at a clearcut ...

Nursing some abused muscles and joints, I decided to just go wander all the trails I could find around Moulton Falls. Very pleasant park, but an amazing number of dog walkers there for a Friday afternoon!

Sure, I know. It's the low hanging fruit of the hiking world. Still, I got in a nice little hike before work and the weather is just too incredible to ignore.

April 30, 2015 Mountainkat 7.49 miles 2,000 feet gained

A weekday trip to get outside and see some waterfalls I haven't seen in a while - Elowah, Upper McCord Creek Falls, Horsetail Falls to Triple Falls. The waterfalls are still beautiful!

April 30, 2015 Rhonda 10.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

I went back east to Virginia to visit my son and he took me to hike this fabulous hike called "Old Rag" in the Shenandoah National Park. OMG I had so much fun on this hike! This is a hike/scramble type of hike. The first mile is a boring road walk and then the next two miles starts a steady climb up. Around mile 3, the scramble starts. You can see blue on th...

Lovely wildflowers blooming on the Oak Ridge Trail. After heading south on Surveyor's Ridge to retrieve my game camera (abysmal results), we turned north to climb up the steep gravel ATV road to Bald Butte. Bald Butte would be a lovely summit except for the massive scars from motorized vehicles, it's a bummer to see that damage. p.s. morels are starting to p...

Nice day for a stroll in The Gorge. Perfect weather. Everything is green or blooming. A stark contrast to the snow and rock of yesterday's trip. Took a short side trip down the 400 trail to check out the elevator shaft for a future outing.

April 27, 2015 Woodswalker 14.2 miles 1,500 feet gained

I was a bit brain dead Monday, so I thought I would just go out to Eagle Creek. As usual I am always amazed by that place. Penstamen, rosy plectritus, valerian, all going strong. Lupines, lilies and Monkey flowers just starting.. Met some nice folks along the trail.

Wanted to do a MSH trip before all the snow melted. The forecast called for partly cloudy skies with temps in the 80's in the valley so off I went. On a whim, I followed a different worm flow thinking it would bring me onto the same approach but that didn't work out as I ended up on the east side of Swift Glacier. Snow was soft, no freezing temps overnight. ...

made it to just around pikers. weather/clouds came in, no fun skiing in a whiteout. didn't have good skinning purchase. an 'ok' ski down...kind of a challenging day. food at big mans compensated for this..

April 26, 2015 Mountainkat 11.12 miles 3,250 feet gained

We hiked from the fish hatchery to the Tanner Butte trail, and most of the way to Wauna Point. I had been wanting to see a particular small waterfall on Munra Creek. I knew that there were a bunch of little waterfalls below the old road and a few above. Having never been on the Tanner Butte trail, I was hoping the waterfall I wanted to see was above the road...

April 26, 2015 Roman 7.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

5 of us Portlandhikers did a trail improvement on lower switchbacks to Munra Point. We blocked off eroded - and way too wide - "direct path" so that hikers would take switchback trail (the idea was to take care of the problem before it grew even bigger and the FS would move in and do something like closing unofficial trail and whatnot...). After that, we hik...

I haven't hiked in about 7 weeks (!!) - after a year, my knee injury is still a pain (literally) on a daily basis. But I can't stay away for long, so I gave it a shot today and fortunately felt pretty solid. (Funny that I can go 10 miles on soft/packed dirt, but can't walk 40mins around town without pain. pavement sucks.) Goats are catching on that the gate ...

Today's hiking plan was a track I got off of Gpsfly. A trek up Wahkeena to Angel's Rest, on to Devil's rest and then back down Wahkeena. Somewhere along the way that plan got skewered. On the way to Angels' Rest, I decided to skip it and we headed up the Foxglove trail to Devil's Rest (which btw was super crowded and I'm not sure what the fascination is with...

We decided to go on the Willapa Hills Rails to Trails hike again. This time we started near the Chehalis TH, but parked in the wrong area. We ended up walking down the road to the real TH, which only added about 0.25 miles. The trail is asphalted, but it has an edge that is gravel and much easier on the feet/knees. Thankfully, our knees have been doing bette...

April 26, 2015 Pablo 9.9 miles 4,250 feet gained

Up Starvation Ridge to Warren Lake and back down Defiance.

April 25 to April 26, 2015 Jen 5 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

We had a great weather window for a family snow camp out on Mount Hood with some hearty Mazama families. A challenging experience for my erratic planning abilities after a third night shift in the hospital. I learned quite a few things and was thankful Mother Nature was gentle to us that night. Snow skills and roped team travel practice the next day, kids an...

Gained a new appreciation for Nesmith Point yesterday, by taking a route less taken! We met at Yeon, the traditional trailhead, then drove one car back to Horsetail Falls. This allowed a fabulous ascent, gaining the 4000' summit over 12 miles rather than 4, all the while soaking in a glorious sun-dappled forest full of rushing streams, waterfalls, a bit of s...

Yesterday was by far the best day I have had in the back country this year. A few weeks ago I got sick right after it had just dumped in the hills. So I was not able to go out, but this weekend the stars aligned and there was plenty of freshies to go around. This was my 1st time heading to the Chinook Pass Area.... so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I wa...

Beautiful sunny day on the east side of the Mt's! My son and I headed out to Catherine Creek but it was so crowded that we couldn't find a parking space!!! I never saw it this crowded. So we just drove to the SW side of the Rowland Lake access to the old road access to the Coyote Wall trail systems. Plenty of colorful flowers and even though it was crowded e...

Been laid up with the flu for the past 5 days and needed to go for a walk.

April 21, 2015 JM 2.5 miles 250 feet gained

After work exploration of this little known but fantastic spot when the flowers are in bloom. Saw alot of birds too, including my first sighting of a Rufous Hummingbird.

April 21, 2015 Jen 4.5 miles 500 feet gained

I biked the wonderful Crown Zellerbach trail to the Nehalem Divide summit and went bushwacking around the top looking for the old trail tunnel. Found out it is a big mistake to bushwack through stinging nettle in shorts and bike cleats. Came back the next day and drove to the top and hiked around with my boots and pants on. Found the tunnel!

Couldn't resist one more trip. Balsam slightly past peak but still totally full on, now joined by lupines and phlox. We saw deer, a lizard and a rattlesnake,

After finishing up my hike of Mt. Dickerman, it was only 3:45 pm, so I decided to go see the Big Four Ice Cave area, since it is right next door to Mt. Dickerman. I knew that this was a popular attraction, but, wowee, the people!!! There were so many people - and I arrived there fairly late in the day. After looking at the ice cave without going inside, I hi...

April 19, 2015 Mountainkat 7.75 miles 4,000 feet gained

I really enjoyed this hike! I saw the first person on the trail at about 2 miles in - very different from my hike at Mailbox Peak on the previous day! I expected to see more people, but, I only saw about 12 groups of people all day. I reached snow at about 4,000 feet. The snow was melting and soft pretty much the whole way to the top. I put the microspikes o...

Spent the day out at Coldwater Lake yesterday. It was not our original destination however. We had planned to hike into Coldwater Peak and beyond if possible but ran into snow/snow drifts that bordered on unsafe and we turned around and just did the loop around Coldwater lake instead. It was our first lake loop and had a good time regardless of the unanticip...

pictures later. wow. feels like july. snow gone at the lot mostly. this is crazy also snowmobilers went up to lunch counter, flagrant wilderness violation.

With such a warm beautiful day we decided to head out toward the Mt. Hood area. Not having hiked to Clear Lake in many years, we decided to park at the Frog Lake parking area and hike this seldom used trail. Hardly any vehicles at the Frog Lake parking area, which surprised us! So we crossed Hwy 26 on the PCT and then turned left on the Blue Box trail. There...
