I hiked up to Gnarl Ridge from Elk Meadows / Sahalie Falls TH on Saturday. I passed through a number of downed trees on the switchback climb up the ridge to Elk Meadows, but they were not too hard to get around. There seems to be a good amount of beargrass flowers budding, but not yet blooming, along this portion of the trail. Once up on the ridge, I visited...

May 30, 2015 acorn woodpecker 4 miles 2,500 feet gained

Took a different route up Hamilton. No Discover Pass needed. You gotta pay for it a different way, though! Bushwacking to great viewpoints for different perspectives to a familiar area.

I was on call this weekend so no day hiking for me, but it was too nice of a day not to get out so after work, we took a quick trip up to Hamilton Mountain for an evening hike. This was my second time doing this hike. The first time was just about 11 months ago. took us 6 hours last time to do this loop. This time it only took 3.5 hours. We nearly cut our ti...

May 30, 2015 Pablo 6 miles 2,000 feet gained

Hiked up the ridge east of the Starway Trail. The ridge is divided into forest down low and rocky ridge above. The forest part was pretty easy to navigate and there is an east/west use trail at the bottom to help get started. The rocky section is a little tougher with some large boulder fields to navigate and one cliff band to figure out (I did a nice steep ...

We decided to head out on the east side of Mt. Hood to hike the Surveyor Ridge Trail. To gain access, we took the Zig Zag Trail. The Zig Zag Trail is a nice workout as it gains 750 feet in the first mile, and you'll go through many switchbacks until you meet an intersection with the Dog River Trail. There is also a trail to a viewpoint of Mt. Hood, but we op...

May 29 to May 31, 2015 Roman 21.2 miles 4,500 feet gained 2 nights

Hiked Boundary Trail via Badger Lake, Kirk and Shark Rock, to Craggy Peak, scrambled to false summit. On the way out detoured to Badger Peak, the site of former lookout. Stayed both nights at Badger Lake.

May 29, 2015 Karl 26 miles 5,250 feet gained

Decided a little training hike was in order yesterday, after a few weeks off the trail, just to see if I could still get around. Ended up doing the Eagle-Tanner loop for the first time, and had my ass appropriately kicked! Who the heck turned up the heat??? Or maybe it was the humidity. Regardless, climbing 3000' after 10 miles up the Eagle Creek valley, as ...

May 27, 2015 Rhonda 8.5 miles 0 feet gained

The weather was too nice to sit inside after work so took a long walk at our local park.

May 26, 2015 Jim 11.5 miles 5,000 feet gained

Finally knocked this one out. It's a steep one, no doubt, but not as bad as I anticipated except perhaps the return trip which I decided I'd had enough of about half way down. Round trip took 6 hours including 30 minutes at the top paying peek-a-boo with Mt Hood.

May 26, 2015 Roman 10 miles 2,750 feet gained

Quiet day hiking little-used trail. Rhododendrons and beargrass already starting to bloom, will get better in the next 2 weeks. Lots of ripe salmonberries on the lower trail. The ridge looks interesting destination for a clear day, some open views I coudn't see. Decided to skip the summit because it was well past my turnaround time.

May 25, 2015 acorn woodpecker 2.5 miles 500 feet gained

The whole family went for a quick afternoon hike after I worked. Too many people, but beautiful waterfalls. Had dinner at the picnic area below the highway afterwards.

May 25, 2015 Pablo 15 miles 3,750 feet gained

Hiked up to Mt Lowe from the Burnt Granite end and came out Rho Creek trail where I'd stashed a bike for the return trip. Top of Jefferson was behind the clouds, Three Finger Jack was visible.

May 25, 2015 Mileage Mike 12.2 miles 1,250 feet gained

I wanted to end this excellent weekend with a great hike. I proposed that we hike around Timothy Lake, but my wife convinced me it would be full of people and generally crowded and noisy. I was sure she was right, so we opted to hike the PCT into the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. It was an excellent choice as we only saw two groups of people the entire da...

May 25, 2015 Mountainkat 11.3 miles 5,000 feet gained

For some reason, I had not hiked this one before. I found some friends who were willing to hike it with me. I enjoyed the variation of the Starvation Ridge Trail on the way up. We stopped for lunch at Warren Lake, which was quiet, except for some fish jumping in the lake. We didn't see a whole lot of people on the trail - we saw most of the people closer to ...

May 25, 2015 Karl 6 miles 750 feet gained

Just a nice walk in the woods, and drive through the countryside, with family. :-)

May 25, 2015 Woodswalker 12.9 miles 3,000 feet gained

Miraculously the sun cleared with just a few puffy clouds for drama. We parked at the Shellrock lake trailhead and did a counter clockwise loop up to Frazier around past Serene Lake and Cache meadows, back up to Frazier and down. Absolutely no snow, A few mosquitoes at the trailhead. A bit of Beargrass and lots of Trilliums. Great day.

May 24 to May 26, 2015 Jen 11 miles 3,000 feet gained 2 nights

My first bikepacking trip, we went around the Metolius Horn, about 24 miles one way. The downstream portion of this riverbefore it rounds the horn and becomes Lake Billy Chinook feels really wild. No-one past the first few miles beyond the gate for the whole trip. On the remotest part of this route( the Shut In Trail), it was more of a bikeschwack where we w...

May 24, 2015 Mileage Mike 10.1 miles 2,250 feet gained

It's been years since we've been to this trail and we decided to go there despite the cloudy weather. The Google directions to this TH were excellent and the road is paved all the way until the parking lot, which was gravel. We were the only car there, and we saw NO hikers the entire day! Truly a perfect Wilderness experience!!! This TH was rerouted and is v...

May 24, 2015 Mountainkat 11.86 miles 2,000 feet gained

I made a spur of the moment decision to go day hike Jefferson Park on Sunday - glad I did! I hiked from the Whitewater TH and it had a decent amount of cars parked there. The hike was very foggy the whole way. There's not really much snow until Jeff Park, where it is mostly snow covered, but varies from a couple feet to a smattering of patches of bare ground...

Sunday we decided to go wander around the Table Rock Wilderness. I had found a gps track we were going to go by and include Table Rock and Pechuck Lookout in the days activities. The morning was cloudy and drizzly like yesterday. We started off at the Table Rock TH and headed out into the clouds. We got the the Table Rock summit junction fairly quickly but d...

May 23, 2015 acorn woodpecker 3 miles 500 feet gained

The whole family went on an afternoon trip to the quiet side of Oxbow. Feasted on salmonberries, admired the Sandy, skipped rocks, and played on the beach in total solitude.

May 23, 2015 Mileage Mike 9 miles 1,500 feet gained

My son likes to keep our family hikes to about 8 miles maximum, but I goofed. I remember this being a short easy loop with little elevation gain, but he didn't quite feel that way! I think the distance signs are wrong for this loop but they weren't that far off. Although there were plenty of dirt bikes and off road vehicles, it wasn't too bad for the most pa...

Saturday I took my best friend to Ape Canyon up to the Plains of Abraham. The day was cloudy and drizzly and there was not much in the way of views, but I had a great time! While up on the Plains we got about a 20 minute window of the perfect mountain views. What an absolute treat! She had never been up there before or that close to the wonder that is St. He...

May 21, 2015 Jim 12 miles 2,750 feet gained

Any trip to MSH is special but I really enjoyed this trip. Nice forest hike. Interesting terrain. Incredible scenery. Crazy weather front that rolled in and bombarded the summit with thunder and lightning for half an hour. Perfect. Except for that last part of the Blue Horse trail that -- despite starting out wide and clear -- ends in massive doug fir blowdo...

May 20, 2015 Jim 8 miles 2,750 feet gained

First time hiking The Gorge this far east on the Oregon side. Looks like Defiance is now on the short list. I really enjoyed this loop and look forward to exploring longer versions in the future.

May 19, 2015 Jen 8.5 miles 3,750 feet gained

Well I didn't get to see a bear like Romann, but I saw tons of bear poo. Enjoyed the solitude, wildflowers, and views. Spooked a mama turkey hen who was roosting on about 10 fuzzy turkey chicks. 4 1/2 hours of dreamy hiking, 35 minutes back to the car on a screaming ride down the east side.

May 18, 2015 Mountainkat 6.89 miles 3,000 feet gained

The parking lot was full on a Monday. I resisted the urge to leave, and hopped in line up the Dog Mountain trail. I actually didn't see as many people as seemed to be parked at the trailhead. The balsamroot seems to be finishing up, but, there is nice phlox near the top. To my surprise, I had complete solitude on the Augspurger trail back to the trailhead.

May 17, 2015 Mountainkat 10.42 miles 500 feet gained

My intent was to hike Shi Shi Beach, but high tide was not at a favorable time. Instead, I hiked Rialto Beach, Second Beach, and Ruby Beach.

May 17, 2015 Roman 8.63 miles 3,000 feet gained

Very nice hike, so quiet and wild. Watched raptors play above balsamroot field, found my way through untracked meadows, saw a bear cub up close. Even got two blurry pictures of it (#26, 27 but it was after I wasted a few seconds, it was much closer when I saw it running away from us). A bit too many ticks there, but otherwise this place is gorgeous.

May 17, 2015 B-Dog 4.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Had a fun day out with my good friend Larry and his daughter. She is almost 3 years old and was a trooper. Dad had to carry her a little bit at the top and just before the car, but she kept on truckin !!!!

May 17, 2015 Mileage Mike 13.4 miles 3,250 feet gained

Another solo day of hiking, and the weather was amazing! I planned on taking the PCT out for 7-9 miles but got to Bonneville Hot Springs a bit late. Also, I didn't have enough water and had no way to filter it at a stream( I do carry tablets but they take 4 hours for sterilization). I was getting signs of significant dehydration and decided to just turn back...

Our hiking plans got changed at the last moment and we decided to do a quick trip to the Lewis River Waterfalls. We had never been before so figured we'd check them out. We were not let down. They are very beautiful! We had the whole hike to ourselves from the Lower Falls to the Upper Falls however coming back we ran into people off an on all the way back. N...
