I had a challenging ride up the hill from Breitenbush and then a short steep hike to a ridge that overlooked this lovely lake set in a wooded basin. Dropped down into some big trees surrounding the lake, similar in feel to Wahtum lake. Was amazed to find a dad and his two small children in a sturdy rowboat fishing in this lake on a perfect spring day. How th...

Last year I did this tour in June and wasn't even able to drive to the end of the road. This year in April, I was able to make it all the way to the end of the road. I wasn't sure how long it was going to be before I could start skinning. Given the conditions around me, it felt like it could be a mile. However I was pleasantly surprised and it ended up only ...

A nice hike by myself ... and probably 150 or more trail friends. I hiked the new trail out and back. There was a bit of slushy snow and some very muddy trail within the last mile of the summit. The summit was snow free.

So this 2.5 mile jaunt to stay the night at 4,000' Butte Camp on St. Helens turned into a fun-filled morning of re-tracing steps back to the sign which says nothing about Butte Camp. With the trail map firmly upon the kitchen counter, we did our best and finally made it up to the camp, where nary a dry spot was to be found among the remaining 6 inches of sno...

Staircase to Flap Jack Lakes to Black & White Lakes than a steep descent to Big Log Camp. Approx 3000' in 2.3 miles. Then back to Staircase. A little snow on the approach & descent from Black & White Lakes but nothing needing traction devices.

April 18, 2015 Mileage Mike 10.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

Gorgeous sunny warm day and we felt like getting out to the Tillamook State Forest. We hadn't been to the Elk Creek area so we headed out there! The parking area outside the closed gate was almost full and we got one of the last spots on the north side of Hwy 6. There were no cars on the south parking area but it was full when we got back. The trail is in ex...

Wandering around snowy roads and some fun scrambles in the hills.

April 17, 2015 Karl 20.5 miles 5,000 feet gained

Finally made it up to Three Corner Rock - a great day with good friends. First time hiking with one of them, which was a real kick. The trail is a long, winding, roller-coaster sort of thing, heading off along Stebbins Creek from Washougal River Road. Most of it is through a lusciously green forest, with the constant sound of rushing water. Crossing the cree...

I had the afternoon free and the landslide on the Oneonata trail is fixed, at least for now. I like to keep going up past Triple Falls and turn around just past the last bridge. Great day!

April 16 to April 20, 2015 Kyle Meyer 24 miles 10,000 feet gained 4 nights

There exists a mile-long, deep, sandy beach on the northwestern shore of Kauai far removed from civillization. There's only two ways in—sea kayak or an 11-mile, 5000' EG hike up and down repeatedly along the sheer cliffs of the coast. Four of us spent four nights at Kalalau Beach, sleeping in the sand and tucked barely into the bushes. Wild cherry tomatoes g...

Apparently I've never hiked Dog Mtn in shorts before today because until today I hadn't noticed just how much poison oak lines the trail. It is A LOT! The clothes are cleaned, shoes are scrubbed, legs are washed --the waiting begins.

April 14, 2015 Jim 10 miles 3,000 feet gained

After a week in SoCal, I was anxious to get back out on the trail. Desert hiking is fine in small doses but rattlers, tarantulas, and scorpions aren't really my thing. Today was more to my liking -- rain, sleet, snow, with splashes of sunshine in between. Unfortunately, clouds rolled in along with heavy snow as I made my way down to the point so no views. Du...

April 12, 2015 Roman 4 miles 1,250 feet gained

Explored side trail that goes to/through talus fields right above the equestrian trailhead. Before long, the trail petered out though and I went straight uphill. Very cool area, one talus field after another, some rocks probably over 6 feet big. Past the rocks, there's some serious brush and poison oak, and it took me 2.5 hours to hit the road - so this rout...

April 12, 2015 Mountainkat 5.68 miles 1,750 feet gained

This place is beautiful right now. It is so green, and has quite a bit of flowers blooming on the slopes. The river views are super. I would like to find a way to extend the hike here, but, we were unsure where the Friends of the Gorge land ended, so we stayed on the trail we knew about. We enjoyed seeing the couple remaining cherry trees in the orchard. It ...

April 12, 2015 acorn woodpecker 5.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

Took my dad to a few viewpoints along Rock of Ages Trail. Nice cool mostly clear day. Down ridge spur to Russ Jolley Trail. Visited the shelter and descended down the canyon to complete the loop.

Rho Ridge in the Clack. Did the part from 2000' to 4000'.

April 11, 2015 Rhonda 11 miles 2,750 feet gained

We took our friend who just moved to Seattle on a day trip up to the Eastern Olympics and hiked the Tunnel Creek trail. We have never been to the Olympics yet and since snow advisories were in the weekend forecast for all the cascades, we figured it was the best bet for the least amount of snow. All I can say...such a pretty hike! We did hit snow starting a ...

Following the service for a [lost friend](http://www.columbian.com/news/2015/apr/08/man-dies-after-hiking-near-mount-st-helens/), a few of us chose to remember him with a quick jaunt up to Angels Rest. Given the weather conditions, we found rather remarkable solitude on this popular peak. It was a fitting end to a hard week. <iframe width="480" height="360" ...

April 11, 2015 Mileage Mike 7.2 miles 1,250 feet gained

I thought this area would escape the weather forecasted, but no luck. a few storms rolled in and the temperature went down and the wind increased. I was dressed properly but my wife forgot her mittens and my gloves weren't sufficient for her Raynauds. Her hands were very cold and we ended up turning around after reaching Riordan Hill Drive.

Lovely trail in the coast range

April 10, 2015 Mountainkat 14.9 miles 1,750 feet gained

I had a great day hiking the Eagle Creek trail to 7.5 mile camp. It was a Friday, and the crowds were surprisingly thin. I often overlook this trail (except during cold winter days) because of its popularity. But, wow, it is such a great trail. There were a ton of flowers out everywhere! And, since the leaves and brush have not yet grown out, I enjoyed seein...

April 9, 2015 Mountainkat 6.05 miles 1,500 feet gained

I spent the day hiking the lower and upper trails at Tom McCall Preserve. There is a lot of balsamroot out on the lower trail and quite a bit on the upper trail, with more still to bloom. There are many other wildflowers blooming as well - very beautiful! I was surprised to learn that a fire had occurred there last year. There's quite a bit of trail re-routi...

April 9, 2015 Mileage Mike 5.2 miles 250 feet gained

The tide was coming in during these hikes and so our hiking distances were limited, primarily because we didn't want to hike on the large round river rock that put us above the tide. Also, the beach was being hard on our knees and we ended up just wanting to get home to our own beds! Beach 1 & 2 are very nice, but there are no sea stacks along their length. ...

It was the last day of our vacation and we wanted to visit the Olympic National Park beaches on the way home. In my opinion, the best coast hike is the Ozette Triangle, but these hikes needed to suffice! I'll summarize Ruby Beach as gorgeous but very overcrowded! The parking lot was full and the beach swarming with people. We escaped some of the crowd by hea...

Really didn't have it in me to stay at the office all day, so I got the heck out of there, grabbed the new pup, and took him on his first "real hike." We had a great time! He's a scrambler; never complaining about the climb once. Only real "issue" was he didn't have much/any interest in just chillin' a bit on the Saddle to enjoy the views. Ah well, he'll get...

Needed out of the house so took a quick 5 mile jaunt to Minto Brown Park. Was sunny and cool out. Thankfully did not have the usual crowds like there are on the weekends.

Slowest speed record ever!! Too many things to look at. Photo capture of the day was a Chocolate Lily and a rattlesnake. I went up the open meadow west of Catherine Creek over to Atwood road and then east to the old 4WD road which is where I saw the rattlesnake. Perfect day!

Today started out to be a fantastic day. We started out by visiting Hurricane Ridge to get a spectacular view of the Olympic Mt. Range. It was such a long drive that we weren't able to go hiking until about 2pm in the afternoon. We decided on the Spruce Railroad Trail as it was very close to Hwy 101 and on the way back to Forks where we were staying. All we ...

The Hoh River Trail is a premium forest hike in Olympic National Park and we didn't want to miss it on this trip! We decided to head out for the Happy Four Shelter, which we hadn't seen before. The actual hike to the shelter is more like 5.7 to 6 miles depending on where you park, but we ended up on other trails to add the additional mileage. This is a beaut...

What a weird place. All kinds of no trespassing signs up there, not sure why or if it's even legal in a city park to make it off limits, but there was lots of evidence of homeless camps and they are still constructing a covered reservoir up there. So many things buried underground here, like an underground armory and nuclear bunker, now a reservoir!

April 6, 2015 Mileage Mike 8.8 miles 1,000 feet gained

We spent a fantastic four days (except for another deer collision :(, and I'll go over that in the last TR ) in the Olympic Peninsula during the Washington Spring Break. We stayed in Forks for our basecamp and so decided to stop along the way in the Lake Quinault area for a hike. We didn't expect much from this area since it's near a populated area that is p...

April 5, 2015 Tree Spirit 7.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

Not quite in full bloom yet, but showing signs of life in the meadow as well as the forest. This trek was challenging for this first-timer, only because folly set in and I left my poles at home! ouch go the knees and joints, but still a worthwhile and wonderful hike. Very crowded, but lunch at the top chatting with a father-son combo in training for St. Hele...

April 5, 2015 Roman 4.23 miles 1,000 feet gained

Just saw this area on Google Earth and thought it might be worth to explore. Not sure why I didn't read anything about it on the forum - so nice! Unlike much larger St. Helens hummocks, those are made not from pumice and fine gravel, but from large boulders, was pretty rough to hike despite the smooth carpet look. Lone-standing ancient trees gave this place ...
