January 14, 2017 B-Dog 3.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

A bluebird day and 8" of week old blower powder made for a great day of skiing the glades at Tronsen Meadows near Blewitt Pass. This was my first time exploring this area. The close access is great, but it's a bit of a drive for me. Probably going to wait until some longer spring days to go deeper into this area, but there is lots of good lines. Spent the da...

We seem to have missed a turn along the Boundary Trail, as we headed east into the blast zone intent on exploring the 1980 debris flows. Snowshoes meant we didn't even leave footprints, at least after 30 minutes of the persist winds. A most incredible day on the volcano!

January 6, 2017 Karl 8 miles 1,750 feet gained

Fun day in the frozen Gorge! Hopped in and out of the car, hitting three different smaller adventures. Icicles galore! Started the day with a tour of Upper McCord and Elowah Falls, then a brief jaunt up Eagle Creek, and ended with a quick in-n-out at Wahclella. First time I've wandered around our initial destination. Headed up towards the Upper McCall Falls ...

January 6, 2017 Woodswalker 8.2 miles 1,500 feet gained

Great day exploring the ice!! Three short hikes that were truly wonderful.

January 1, 2017 Woodswalker 3.8 miles 500 feet gained

Beautiful way to bring in the New Year! Almost a foot of fresh powder on the trees and no wind. There is a rock slide almost all the ways to the falls, which is tricky in snow shoes, with occasional deep wells in the rocks. Fine going up. A little more interesting coming down. Good company and a perfect day.

December 30, 2016 Woodswalker 6.4 miles 250 feet gained

Wonderful day in the ice,sun and wind out at Swale Canyon. Very crusty snow, about 6" deep. Micro spikes were helpful but it could have been done with out them. First time I've been out there in the snow. Amazing. Perfect end to the year. Happy New Year all.

December 30, 2016 Karl 13 miles 1,500 feet gained

One last trip out in 2016! Went to see the Metlako landslide, and weren't disappointed! It was a pretty cold morning, and we met at the outer parking lot. Driving in to the closer departure point was a bit sketchy, but not too bad. Only three cars ahead of us. We put on our microspikes in the parking area. As we wandered on up, lots of little debris slides h...

December 28, 2016 Karl 12.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Both inspired by Roman's recent report, as well as the relatively clear roads, we decided to hit up Hardy Ridge. Pulled out at Cape Horn on the way east, and were treated to another wonderful view from there! Rather than driving up to the Equestrian TH, with it's accumulation of snow, we just parked down on SR-14 beside the big rock (the gate was closed) and...

December 25, 2016 Roman 7.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

Perfect weather, fresh snow from the night before, unbelievable sunset! Judging by the tracks I was alone on Hardy yesterday, and probably just 1 person the day before. Decided to not do a loop in the dark, and return back on a more tracked trail on west side.

December 24 to January 11, 2017 Jen 220 miles 38,750 feet gained 18 nights

2016 hiking log I was crippled in 2016 with a very bad hip, but I did get some hiking in, here is a summary of my trips: 1/20: Barlow Pass xc ski, 5 miles 500 eg 2/1-3: Snowshoe/ski to Whiteriver Hut: Skiing not so good, but the weather was fantastic! Stayed 2 nights at the hut and enjoyed snowshoeing up the nearby butte. 15 miles 1000 eg 2/14: Woodward Fall...

December 24 to December 25, 2016 runandsew 6 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

Hiked into Trillium Lake with our entire adult family of five carrying firewood. My daughter and I did the daunting task of locating the fire pit by the pavillion. We succeeded and had a wonderful fire with bench seating around.

December 24, 2016 B-Dog 1.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Had an amazing day up on the mountain with Theo and Mindy. We got 2 runs in and plenty of face shots. Up high there was about 6 - 8" of dry fresh snow over a crusty bottom. This was expected after how much rain they had received earlier in the week. On our last run we actually found some really nice turns skiers right of the Hyak Face. We only scraped the cr...

December 22, 2016 Woodswalker 10 miles 2,750 feet gained

Beautiful day celebrating the Solstice with Karl and another friend. I'm just dittoing his report :) He said it all really well.

December 22, 2016 Karl 10 miles 2,750 feet gained

Celebrating the Winter Solstice, in the sun, on a snow-covered mountain, with friends... Priceless. Got a wake-up PM, asking if by any possible, last-minute, remote chance, might I be free to hike? Winter solstice? Sunny forecast? Before the first cup of coffee, "Yes!" was the only possible answer. Heh, but given the alarm hadn't been set, we weren't really ...

December 18, 2016 Karl 10 miles 1,750 feet gained

Great day on the PCT, celebrating the birthday of a friend. Good sized group had a very late start, leaving the Bridge of the Gods trailhead just before noon. Ran into several groups of friends through the day, as many seemed to have also felt this was the perfect hike for the conditions (both driving and hiking!). The trail was pretty well packed, at least ...

December 17, 2016 B-Dog 1 miles 1,000 feet gained

Mindy and I went for a quick tour up Hyak face. Just wanted to get up and check on the conditions. It was amazing how preserved the snow was up there with all the cold temps. It was by far the driest snow that I have ever experienced in my 15 years of living in the PNW. Turns were plentiful and it felt great to really get the season kicked off with bang !!!

December 17, 2016 Karl 7 miles 250 feet gained

The roads were questionable, the Gorge was pretty miserable, so the pooch and I just took a really nice, long walk down in the valley below home. It was a great day to wander Salmon Creek! All the ice and cold weather meant we were virtually the only ones down there. Lots of wildlife close to the trail. Such a jewel, right (literally) in our own backyard!

December 17, 2016 Roman 5.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

In short - a lot of snow, some ice, almost no blowdown. When I got to Multnomah Falls the lower gate was closed (the signs only warned about hazardous conditions, so everyone went around the gate), but when I was near Benson Bridge people coming back said the trail is closed and there's ranger turning everyone around. I didn't want to lose any more daylight ...

December 15, 2016 Roman 3 miles 250 feet gained

Repeat of last week's hike (mostly), but with more holiday lights! Snow really makes everything look great

December 13, 2016 Roman 5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Lunch break hike. Very icy in the beginning and again after the barricade (the middle of the road on W side has mostly melted out); the road is completely blocked by fallen trees and rocks. Slower hiking speed but definitely appreciated lack of cars & the quiet. I can only guess condition of trails further east.

December 12, 2016 Woodswalker 6.9 miles 1,750 feet gained

Another gorgeous day in the gorge. There was about 12-18 inches of snow in places and some very narrow tread. Ran into some lovely folks. Spikes were necessary and if the snow gets softer it might not be so safe. Fantastic day.

December 3, 2016 Roman 9.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Planned Hardy Ridge hike but couldn't find my Discover Pass - but any time outdoors is nice. Was pretty sunny in the beginning, mostly dry day until the very end.

December 3, 2016 Rhonda 4 miles 500 feet gained

Quick trip to Peavy for a short hike with my best friend.

December 3, 2016 Karl 19 miles 4,500 feet gained

It really wasn't looking like a view-day, so we chose the darkest, deepest, nearby rainforest instead. Turned out to be a fine choice, too! Started fairly early, first cars at Horsetail Falls, and the miles to Triple Falls ticked off very quickly. The trail is in excellent shape, in particular the repairs to the landslide of a couple years ago. We (I won't i...

November 27, 2016 Karl 12 miles 2,750 feet gained

Again, the forecast was pretty miserable, so we felt heading east may offer a bit of respite. Turns out, it rains in the Lyle-Mosier area, too! Who knew? :-) After getting something of a late start, we headed up the Labyrinth and just sort of wandered without a plan. Ended up cutting across over towards the large talus fields, which are filled with native vi...

November 27, 2016 Woodswalker 10.2 miles 2,750 feet gained

Wonderful misty day in the gorge. Still a lot of mushrooms. The washout 1 mile south of Triple Falls is manageable as long as the creek level doesn't rise. Winter creek was mostly a dry footed crossing. Great day.

November 25, 2016 Karl 10 miles 2,750 feet gained

We got [skunked by Tish Creek](http://wenthiking.com/users/295-karl/hikes/6194-eagle-creek) earlier in the day, so decided taking a run up the Elevator Shaft might be the best way to kill the afternoon. What a great way to recover from the earlier failure! The Black Friday crowds at Multnomah Falls were epic, but we did the conga up to Benson Bridge and surv...

November 25, 2016 Karl 5.5 miles 500 feet gained

Time to walk-off the turkey! Unfortunately, or otherwise, Portland received 5% of its annual rainfall on Thanksgiving, which meant the creeks were raging this day. There were impromptu waterfalls on both sides of the canyon, spilling down over the trail on our side, and just looking wonderful across from us. The clouds were still hanging heavy in the hills, ...

November 22, 2016 Roman 4.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Lunch break hike, before all the rain started. Nice partly sunny day, quite windy on the top.

November 20, 2016 Rhonda 6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Took my friend up to Triangulation Peak for a quick morning hike in the snow. Not much on road to TH at the time, but guessing TH is covered now. Did not go down to Boca on this trip.
