Not really sure finding backside trails without GPS and compass was a good idea (even though I've been there several times). Had to guess on several junctions, but we figured it out.

Fourth time this year to Paradise Park, third time up the Kiwanas Trail (778), first time completely snow free. Windy and cold. We were glad to have layers and raincoats (for warmth, but lousy as pillow).

Goat Peak was the home of a fire lookout so the views @ the summit are 360 degrees & fantastic. Rainier was visible during the climb up but the weather moved in while I was approaching the summit & Rainier disappeared behind a bank of clouds. Nice views of Fife Peak, Goat Rock Wilderness & Bumping Lake. At summit was even hailed on for a spell. Afterward hik...

Easy day in the Badger Wilderness. Beautiful dramatic skies watching rain showers move across the plains below us. Had fun catching up on the fire season news and general latest happenings with the staff person at Flag Point Lookout. Wonderful day.

We had our annual Labor Day weekend trip and Mayumi got to pick our destination this year. A few weeks ago she enjoyed our trip to Dewey Lake so much that she wanted to go back. We decided to leave on Friday to have a better chance at getting a good spot on the lake. We timed everything just right and missed all the rain on the approach. Just after getting c...

Major revelation: Mount Rainier National Park is almost exactly the same distance from home as the Whitewater Trailhead into Jefferson Park! Whoa!!! Reality altering realization, there. It's always seemed much farther away, and yet it's actually much closer because the roads are so much better and no need to deal with crazy urban messes in the Portland-Salem...

Three days camping at Walupt Lake with amazing day hikes. The wildflowers are still putting on a show in the wet patches, although they are bloomed out elsewhere. Fantastic views and only one small misty shower. Great day in a stunning area.

I was expecting better views from this hike as my hiking guide rated it 4 out of 5 stars. Appears since the book was written the trees have grown blocking some of the views.

We just stopped off at Walupt Lake campground long enough to pick a site and park the car. Then up the trail we went to Sheep Lake. Amazingly quiet for a Friday and hot enough to take a quick dip in the lake. Some one had beat us to the huckleberries, but the views and lake beauty more than compensated.

Just an excellent little dog walk in our favorite nearby state park. These trails are normally quite secluded, but on a Monday even more so! We saw three people on the way up, five or seven on top, and three coming back down. Wow! Made it to the top in what I believe is a personal best time of 1:15. Wasn't hurrying, but it just worked out that way. Five or s...

On Sunday I took Russ up to the south rib scramble on Guye Peak. Russ earned a feather for completing his first major scramble of a peak. It was a gorgeous day and the temps were just right. When we reached the summit there was a nice breeze and it continued for most of our descent. All around a really great day to be out on a peak !!!

With a forecast of 102° in the city, we decided to get up early and get as high as possible. My good friend suggested meeting at Timberline Lodge at 4:00 am, and just seeing where we ended up. Why not? Sounded fun! Though we had headlamps, there was really never a need for them. The nearly full moon kept us on track as we meandered up the Magic Mile between ...

We decided to take a family hike and beat the heat this weekend. Mayumi liked the Chinook pass area so much last weekend, that we decided to try another nearby lake. Have wanted to cowboy camp on top of South Sister, ever since first climbing it overnight to watch the sunrise a few years ago. Totally worth it! Following a series of delays, finally left the trailhead in 94° heat about 2:45 in the afternoon. The pack was heavy with water for the dry, dusty trail. Kind of brutal, even through the shaded forest. After breaki...

It was a gnarly weather day so I decided to go where the weather would add to the scenery. So I went to Zumwalt prairie and took a short stroll and then drove up the long gravel road to Buckhorn Lookout on the edge of Hell's Canyon. Fantastic views and tons of wildlife. Especially close to Buckhorn Lookout.

Decided to try a different route in, this time, and went to the McGee Creek trailhead rather than Top Spur. I like! It starts about 300' lower, and adds a mile or so in each direction.
