With Chinook Pass & White River Rd closing on the 21st, we decided to make one last run at this area. We had heard about all the great snow that had flying in early Nov. and it didn't disappoint, we actually ended up being one of the last parties for the season. It had snowed all day and the ranger swung by just as we got to the parking lot. He informed us t...

Really awesome loop with an old trail friend. Had not a solid plan in place, but rather just wandered. Left the trailhead, heading up the Herman Creek trail. On an impulse, we turned off on Gorton Creek towards Indian Point. Ran into a bit of trouble (for the trail, not us) where a huge fallen tree's rootball completely tore out the trail, just a bit before ...

The first out of six other people was Larry from Grocery Outlet. Pretty cold and windy at the top, but what I love about this hike is that it's the best bang for your buck hike. Gone from the house for six hours and got a lot of elevation in five miles.

November 12, 2016 Karl 7.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

Fun loop with a good friend and trusty companion. Enjoyed watching the clouds and various weather march through the Gorge, and avoided any nasty spills due to the increasingly muddy trail. A bit of rain, a bit of sun, mostly just pervasive dampness. Awesome option to have as just about the closest trailhead from home.

Got 2 hours early from work to hike this forest loop, really nice warm weather (I've seen it colder in June), though very windy on Angels Rest. Was really nice to start with sun still out, though wished (again!) I had my GPS for back side trails in the dark. Going down the main trail I experimented going without flashlight, very doable with moon and light cl...

Did a bit of exploring in the Pocket creek area with a friend who is doing wildlife survey work. pretty quiet day. We were on and off of the ski trails all day. BTW ski trails in summer are really just slightly lower brush with frequent blue diamonds on the trees. Looks like the Larches are almost gone needle wise. We saw lots of cool mountain views, but not...

Finally got out for a solid jaunt with my bestie last Sunday. Did an extended loop around Multnomah Falls. Up Wahkeena heading towards Devil's Rest, going off trail a bit to the basin and on down to Nesika and the ornament trail. Was a seriously much needed outing that I am feeling a bit with how bad of hiking shape I'm in these days.

Finally got back out into the woods, after six weeks off the trail. So re-invigorating to realize how the stress had just melted right away almost instantly up there. Started at the Gumjuwac trailhead, right on US-35, and climbed up the first couple miles through the woods before hitting the first viewpoint. Unfortunately, Mount Hood was stubbornly stuck in ...

This is one of my favorite fall time Mt. Rainier hikes. Rainier unfortnaley was mostly cloud covered but the falls were thundering pretty good. Once past the falls and up toward Van Trump Park the trail becomes snow covered approx. 1/2 mile from V.T. Park. I brought micro spikes but they were not needed.

October 23, 2016 Woodswalker 8.2 miles 1,750 feet gained

I have finally accepted that fact that winter is here and I need to shift towards misty day hikes. I wanted to go somewhere quiet so we parked at Larch Mountain parking lot and walked a ways down the hill to the top of the Oneonta trail with the goal of wandering down to Bell Creek. Perfect day, we saw one other person, tons of mushrooms and hundreds of spri...

Took my friend up to Marion Lake - Marion Falls for a quick Saturday hike. It's been a crazy few months and I have not gotten out much so this trip felt really good. May have only been a few miles but to just get "out" in the woods again, felt fabulous!!

October 21 to October 22, 2016 Roman 12 miles 2,250 feet gained 1 night

With a nice Saturday forecast, drove Friday straight from work and spent night at the trailhead, to make the most use of daylight. The Park got some snow and everything looked wintry, but at the same time the lakes are only starting to freeze. Great views, nice to see some sun and blue sky - it's been awesome day up there!

October 11, 2016 Woodswalker 5 miles 750 feet gained

Quick trip along the Timberline. Beautiful but icy near water. Once I got to Heather Canyon I had planned to head up it. But it was way too icy and the water was moving a bit fast towards that big waterfall. Great day even though it was short.

October 9 to October 10, 2016 Roman 6.5 miles 1,750 feet gained 1 night

Hiked/camped 1st night on the E aide of Grey Butte, but rain arrived by mid-morning so I drove west to more sunny area.

October 2, 2016 Roman 4 miles 2,000 feet gained

Took advantage of 6...7K snow levels to get out of the rain at Timberline. Didn't count on any views on a cloudy day, but there was some, and after a quick blizzard the weather really calmed down by sunset.

September 25 to September 26, 2016 Roman 17.5 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

Hiked to Horseshoe Meadow on PCT, and then off-trail to about 7,250' on the mountain. Real summer weather, almost too warm - a nice change after a few rainy weeks. Ran into a group of 3-4 mountain goats rounding a corner onto a snowfield, but they really afraid of hunters up there, immediately ran behind the rocks and scattered each other way - only could ta...

September 25, 2016 Woodswalker 11 miles 1,250 feet gained

Beautiful day. The fall colors are at peak right now and the lakes are still looking good! We started at E. Crater trailhead and went past Junction Lake through all the lovely meadows and tarns. Deep Lake ended up being our turnaround point after a marvelous day.

September 25, 2016 Father Guido Sarducci 7.2 miles 3,250 feet gained

While the crowds are clammoring up to Paradise this trail offers solitude along with great views. Did not see a single person on the trail all day and besides Rainier looming in your face, Adams, St. Helens & even Hood could be seen from the summit.

September 24, 2016 Roman 6.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Went with my dad to test new lens and spend an evening outdoors. There's a new trail being built that will bypass Devil's Elbow (though less direct than former elk trail).

September 22, 2016 Rhonda 2 miles 0 feet gained

Went to Davis Bayou while out in Mississippi visiting my son. Short little stroll, saw a box turtle meandering around the trail, a juvenile alligator, and an adult alligator. I saw the adult resident one 4 years ago when I went and let me tell you she got much bigger. Sadly the ranger said folks are feeding her. Some people are not very bright. She now comes...

September 16, 2016 Karl 12.5 miles 4,500 feet gained

Did my fourth loop over to Paradise park, then up to the viewpoint over the Sandy River headwaters, across and back down to the site of a B-26 plane crash in 1949 on Mississippi Head, and finally shooting back up to 8500' as we crossed back to the upper reach of the Palmer ski run high above Timberline Lodge. What a great day! It was perhaps the last blue-sk...

September 15, 2016 Rhonda 3 miles 500 feet gained

Did a short, quick hike at Drift Creek Falls to relax me before my trip out to the east coast. Later in the day, not too many people out. I picked the perfect spot that day.

September 12 to September 16, 2016 runandsew 67.5 miles 12,000 feet gained 4 nights

Beautiful trip in Yosemite, starting and ending at Glacier Point, over Red Pass, around to Merced Lake Ranger Station with a side trip to Emerick Lake.

September 10 to September 11, 2016 Karl 21 miles 4,750 feet gained 1 night

Four years in the planning, dreaming, delaying, ... We finally did it! Looped around Spirit Lake. Nearly. As it turned out, we had two vehicles, so we shuttled the four paved miles between Windy Ridge and Independence Pass. That gave us the time to tag a number of fun peaks along the loop, and the luxury of starting and stopping under light of day. (Not to m...

Delightful little jaunt down to the water's edge, from a trailhead only a few miles shy of Windy Ridge. Absolutely worth the diversion if you're in the area. We were meeting up there, for a much bigger hike the next day, and I took advantage of the hour or so of sunlight still left to head on down to the lakeshore. The stats are quite similar to Multnomah Fa...
