This was supposed be the beginning of a hut to hut trip, starting in the resort town of Kranjska Gora, traveling though some villages then up Planina valley to Tamar Dom. An hour into our trip the thunderclouds appeared as we were walking through some farm fields. We took refuge in a chicken shack for some family bonding as the torrent raged. After it subsid...

First hike in the Julian Alps of Slovenia! We stayed in the idyllic town of Dresniza and this was the mountain above it.Started at 0500 and had solitude until I was almost back to the TH. Ruins of military bunkers from WW1 near the top.

June 24, 2019 Woodswalker 13 miles 2,000 feet gained

The bloom is slowly starting up near Timberline. A few snow patches and no bugs. We started at Barlow Pass and wandered awhile around the lodge. Wonderful day.

I am sure the views from the peak are nice but I did not see any of them because of the foggy, misty weather conditions. Nice waterfall at the 1.5 mile mark. Hike is on my fair weather re-do list.

June 22 to June 24, 2019 Sarah Johnson 14.7 miles 5,000 feet gained 2 nights

I have to thank my climb team who fed me after I abandoned my pack for the last steep pitch to the summit. When I went to retrieve, I found that ravens had stolen ALL of my food. Zippers were undone, my headlamp was discarded, my bug spray chewed. They actually unclipped my bag to get into the inner contents. Amazing. Luckily my climb leader had an extra mou...

June 18, 2019 Roman 1 miles 0 feet gained

Hiked from Grouse Vista to the ridge where Eds Trail runs on east side (did a small part Eds trail, but mostly stayed on west side). It was pretty cold and windy in the low 50's, and summit was hiding in low clouds by the time I got close, so I stayed lower for the views. Either because of the weather, of being a weekday, but mountain was very quiet, felt li...

June 17, 2019 Woodswalker 7.7 miles 1,500 feet gained

Great day! Not too crowded. The snow is completely gone. The Rhodies and beargrass is looking great around the lake. Definitely some bugs from the lake up

June 15, 2019 Sarah Johnson 12.5 miles 5,000 feet gained

Friday began with a hellish day at work. I wanted to leave early, so decided to skip lunch so I could try to exit and get an early start heading towards the mountain. The freight gods had other plans, and as truck after truck came in, I was stuck. I ordered myself a sub from grubhub, and ate half it while trying to get us caught up. I work for a very busy sa...

June 14 to June 16, 2019 Jen 21.5 miles 7,250 feet gained 2 nights

This one was a doozy! Turned my ankle on the way to basecamp. It was wobbly the rest of the weekend, stressful, but it held up. Really enjoyed my two nights in the tent. Beautiful forest, it never got cold, bugs minimal. Fun climb, and....I saw a baby goat!

June 13, 2019 Woodswalker 14.5 miles 4,000 feet gained

I was just planning on doing the Mult/Wahkeena loop, but the mountain beckoned and so up I went. The montia and dicentra blooms are going crazy in the burn right now. Beargrass and Rhodies blooming near the top. Looks like there might be a good fireweed bloom in a few weeks in the burned areas. Beautiful day.

June 10, 2019 Jen 7 miles 750 feet gained

Joyful, but the FP trails are almost at the concrete stage again.

June 9 to June 10, 2019 runandsew 8 miles 3,000 feet gained 1 night

Snow started at 6100' and was glorious on the final slog up to the shelter.

June 9, 2019 Sarah Johnson 7.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Beautiful day on the mountain attempting to reach McNeil Point. Turned around when we felt like we should have brought helmet/traction/ice axe. Views were incredible even if we didn’t make it to our intended destination.

June 6, 2019 Jen 7.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

You start a bit lower than Grouse Vista, but this old road is not as rocky as the GV trail. I scrambled up to the Vision Quest pits then cut over to the south summit of Silver Star. The goat was waiting for me at the top. She then moved a bit downhill and I observed her foraging as I ate my lunch. No-one else around for 45 minutes. When another pair of hiker...

June 2, 2019 Sarah Johnson 11.2 miles 1,750 feet gained

Posted a plea for a hiking partner last weekend, and my friend Keith Dechant offered to join. Armed with Matt Reeder’s Off the Beaten Trail, we decided to tackle Grayback Mountain. After a very hot hike on Grayback we decided to drive and explore more of the region around The Klickitat. A random unmarked viewpoint and scenic drive through a canyon on the Kli...

June 2, 2019 Jen 4.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Friends visiting from east coast. I tried to convince them to camp in a tent, but instead we stayed at fancy vacation home at Black Butte Ranch. I took them up the local volcano. Did great despite the hangovers!

June 1 to June 2, 2019 runandsew 6.5 miles 4,250 feet gained 1 night

Spent the night a out of boundary of Timberline, continued up the dirt to past Palmer where we crossed and followed footprints up towards Hood. Our sights kept getting loftier. First goal was the base of Crater Rock, then a little higher, the shoot for 10,000". We made it to 10,150". I have always wanted to get higher on Hood and yesterday was the day.

I've heard about this hike but never have attempted it before. It is a workout. The hike begins at the Upper Dungeness River TH and is a nice, easy stroll along the river until you reach Camp Handy. From there you cross the Dungeness River and pick up the Goat Lake way trail. We had a little bit of trail finding at that point but if you keep the river headin...

May 31 to June 1, 2019 Roman 1 miles 0 feet gained 1 night

Backpacked on to Rock Lake 5/31 to 6/1, and then hiked to Junction Lake & around the East Crater on 6/3.

May 27, 2019 Father Guido Sarducci 12.47 miles 4,500 feet gained

Began hike at the Upper Big Quilcene River TH. Quite a bit of snow remains above Camp Mystery but no traction devices needed. From the pass hiked up to Buckhorn Mtns. false summit which is at 6840’.

May 27, 2019 Jen 9.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

Trail finding skills challenged today. Wasnt expecting so much snow. Pretty persistent above 5000 ft. Did not see another human is six hours and it's Memorial Day.

May 26, 2019 Sarah Johnson 14 miles 1,750 feet gained

Pretty awesome day with my friend Jason at Criterion Ranch, cows = 0, bears = 1. First time spotting a bear in Oregon. (I've seen plenty in Washington.) Went about halfway down to the Deschutes, then a long trip back up. Last four miles were killer as the radio tower at the trail head loomed far in the distance. This trail is deceiving - the hard uneven grou...

May 25, 2019 Jen 8 miles 1,500 feet gained

Just had half a day, it was raining and there was no-one around. Forest was intoxicating.

May 21, 2019 Jen 9 miles 2,000 feet gained

Did the loop starting from the campground plus a few other forays. Hoping for morel bounty, but just found a few.

May 19, 2019 Woodswalker 11.8 miles 3,000 feet gained

Even though the views were completely absent, it was a lovely, misty green day out in the woods. The flowers are starting lower down, the Rhodies are a few weeks away from bloom and there were actually a few flowers blooming valiantly at the summit. Amazing day.

May 18, 2019 Sarah Johnson 12 miles 5,000 feet gained

My friend asked if I wanted to take a “leisurely stroll” up Mt Defiance Saturday morning. And I thought, what better way to torture myself after a couple of weeks of missing out on hiking. Ran into a few Mazamas who were keeping the same pace as us on the way up. Turns out they were Mountain Dogs from a different year of BCEP. Took a summit photo and sent it...

May 14, 2019 Jen 12 miles 5,750 feet gained

On a Mazama trip. Because of the soft snow reports, we decided to do a midnight start for firmer conditions. The sunrise was beautiful at 0500, then the weather turned and was miserable the rest of the trip. We persisted and summited in a whiteout. Going down we were facing into the wind and got pummeled by horizontal ice pellets. Type 2 fun!

May 12, 2019 Woodswalker 10.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

So great to get out in a green unburned section of the gorge. Lots of small viewpoints along the Wygant trail mostly looking west. We went to the small hanging meadows past Wygant Peak and through use trails, old roads and a bit of bushwhacking made a loop from the top over to Mitchell Point. The poison oak is mostly avoidable on the trails, but there are a ...

May 6, 2019 Woodswalker 10 miles 2,000 feet gained

Great day on Hamilton! After hitting the summit then the saddle, I took Don's Cutoff down to Upper Hardy Creek trail to check out the woodland bloom. Tons of yellow violets, some trillium, and bleeding hearts in the woods. Larkspur blooming in the exposed areas.

May 4 to May 5, 2019 Jen 26 miles 5,500 feet gained 1 night

First time on this side of the mountain in over 20 years. I parked at the Carbon River gate and biked up to the Ipsut Campground. So lovely! set up my campsite and hiked up the Wonderland to see the Carbon Glacier, a really cool suspension bridge and some goats. 9 miles, 1500 ft eg. The next morning, I zoomed down to the gate, put away my bike, changed out g...

May 4 to May 5, 2019 runandsew 5 miles 2,750 feet gained 1 night

Once again, we started hiking at 9pm, spent the night and continued up to Palmer this morning. Glissading down 1,000' has to be one of the funnest things I've done in a long time. After watching countless people slide down the chute, I switched my backpack so it wouldn't drag and went for it. The GPS clocked me at 8 and 9 mph. Whooo!
