Have to start from the Wind River road. 2.5 mile ski up the access road to the TH. Over the weekend, snowshoes plowed a trough that is now well packed, so now you could hike it without snowshoes. At TH we stepped out of the sticks and hiked to the falls. Had microspikes on but they were not necessary.

Did not manage to get a hike in last weekend, as I was busy at the Mazama lodge playing rescuer and patient in the snow finishing up my Mountaineering First Aid. I was happy I didn't die in the mass casualty scenario, but post holing in the snow up to my waist searching for rock fall victims made for a very sore hip. Which lead to a sore and slow hike up Dog...

Today I did something I thought I'd never do Went hiking with a group of 22 We started early and were quite fast and efficient on stops, not agonizing at all!

Getting out to hike, has been difficult the last month, so I was happy to get out with friends who were doing a rehab hike. They had invited a couple of hikers, I had been wanting to meet for awhile. It's a really nice park, the trails are mostly paved, with lots of wetland views. It seems like a great birdwatcher area. Great day with great people.

One still cannot reach the normal Ellinor TH's due to snow so began hike at the Big Creek TH. Have never attempted an Ellinor hike/climb from this TH and it does make for a long day. Used microspikes from the parking lot up to the upper Ellinor TH then switched to snowshoes until the avalanche chute. Used crampons from there to the summit. There was an easy ...

First hike for BCEP-with all this snow, it's going to be tough finding appropriate hikes for climb school.

The road is plowed to about mp 7. Yahoos with big trucks have gone further, but at around mp 9, it was just snowcat tracks- some nice person groomed it yesterday for us, and there was a fresh inch or two of new snow on top of the groom. However that ended at about mp 10.5 (yes they went beyond the gate). We then had to break trail in some deep stuff, slow go...

Spent the weekend camping at Westwind, as part of a Trackers Earth employee getaway. (My partner works as a 7th grade teacher for the Forest School, as well as a summer camp educator.) The majority of the weekend was spent walking the beach, drinking, playing board games, eating, drinking more, and checking out God's Thumb. Lots of walking, just took a guess...

Was supposed to be a bluebird day and it started out that way. We made fast time to the lower Ellinore TH in microspikes. Switched to snowshoes and slowed down a bit. At the point where the summer and winter route splits all tracks had disappeared, and the snow was deep and heavy. Difficult to manage the steep slopes in snowshoes. As we made our way up to th...

We were supposed to hike Mt Rose, but couldn't quite get to the TH. maybe we should have skiied the road to get there... Decided to try the Big Creek loop and spur to the low Mt Ellinor TH just to see if it was feasible to attempt a summit the next day. The trail was well packed and doable in spikes. Snowing at higher elevations. Lovely creek and well loved ...

Worked on my skills in both directions on this tour. Very exhausting to go uphill on the TJ trail without skins, but snow was great so we dug in and trudged upwards. The downhill via the open burn and then wagon road was superb. Yay powder.

I always try to do the popular gorge hikes when the weather is bad, so I expected with the snow/slush that it would deter the typical crowd. Not so. I encountered every type of hiker I dislike today. As a dog owner, I'm really sad at how many inconsiderate dog owners are on the trails giving the rest of us a bad name. All of my bad experiences today came fro...

Ducked off 26 on Lolo Pass Road just before the traffic slowdown this morning and drove up to the end of the plowed section of road and then snowshoed in to the Ramona Falls TH. Quite a few folks. Lolo Pass was packed snow in the morning and mostly bare pavement mid afternoon. Great snow and a wonderful day.

Fun ski tour from the Kalama Horse Camp. Last 1/2 mile we had to break trail to get to the marsh, snow was heavy. Downhill was mighty fine! Just a few noise machines around today.

Averaged about 3mph so I think this can qualify as a hike (also more xc skiing is work than hiking). It was snowing pretty well the entire time, great powder at 16F, really enjoyed it. I forgot a phone in the car, but we got some pictures on the drive.

Entered via the Highline TH and took various trails up to summit 1. Conditions were mellow with a little snow dusting when approaching summit 1. Once we got to the exposed area/viewpoint near the Hikers Hut the snow and wind were howling pretty good necessitating taking our lunch break within the shelter of the Hut. After lunch headed back down taking variou...

Our destination was Dry Mtn. but while attempting to ford Dry Creek, which is anything but dry this time of year, my hiking partner slipped off the crossing log and took a bath in the creek. Thankfully no injuries but it was decided at that point retuning to the car was the prudent decision due to his cold, soggy condition.

Today was an odd day. Set out from Portland at 8:00 with an AYM group, celebrating Matt Reeder leading 10 years of hikes with AYM. Lots of last minute cancellations, bringing our group down to 8 from 12. (Don't be a dick, canceling the night before a hike is just rude unless you have an emergency.) So is not showing up when you are still signed up. Anyway......

Just a quickie up wind mountain today. Slept in and didn't leave Portland until around noon. The gorge was like night and day on our trip out. Near Portland, a cloud hovered and kept the beginning of the gorge looking like you were driving in the movie "The Mist". But we came out of it and into sunshine. Nice way to stretch the legs on an otherwise lazy day.

Did a nice loop out to University Falls. Not many people on the trail, but a lot of gunfire and atv noise in the near proximity. There are some really pretty stretches of creek.
