Wahclella is still beautiful. I added a bit extra by walking along the paved bike path towards the east, checking out the burn up in the Tanner area. Looks pretty toasted up there, but the power company is still clearly driving the road that goes to the Tanner Butte Trailhead.

Glorious day. Very quiet up there until about noon. Perfect amount of snow for beauty and easy walking.

Thanksgiving Day. Decided to take my partner Zane out to Mack's Canyon, so he could see how awesome it was. Hit up White River Falls on the way. Had a simple Thanksgiving dinner between the two of us over an open fire at a campsite at the trailhead. Corn dogs and a can of beans, with a couple of beers. I never said we were fancy people. For desert, a bag of ...

We parked just past the gate at the 10.5 mile marker and took the connector trail over to the Larch Mountain trail. 4-5 inches at the parking lot. No views, so we headed down Oneonta a ways into the Bell Creek area, then headed back up through the crater and back to the car. So beautiful with just a dusting of snow right now, although more is coming in.

Never done this trail before. Saw some deer and mt. goats but not a single person during the entire hike. Rainier was a bit cloudy but could see Adams, St Helens and even a glimpse of Mt. Hood in the distance. Hiked as far as Mt. Arafat and it looks like from where I stopped Arafat would be a non-technical 4-500' scramble to its 6000' summit. Will have to ch...

Just a short hike to see the mountains since I only had a few hours available. Beautiful views of the mountains. I notice the Doug Firs are starting to get taller near the top viewpoint and will be blocking some of the views to Adams soon. Great day.

I brought my bike and rode the new section of the bikepath between Wyeth and Starvation Creek. It is a lovely addition to our gorge. Much of it is like the old highway with stonework walls, little alcoves plus artful placements of giant chunks of hexagonal basalt column. The viaducts are cool too. The only thing I don't care for is the roar of 84, so I would...

I got to meet Sarah from this site and a lot of other awesome folks out on a group hike, to a part of the Deschutes I had visited but not hiked in before. What an awesome day.

Sometimes, you need a little sunshine when Portland gets into the dreary wet season. Went on a hike today lead by my friend Matt Reeder, who never disappoints when choosing an unknown destination. It was a long drive from Portland, but well worth it. The days and my mood have been dark lately, so hiking in the high desert was a welcome change. And as a bonus...

My favorite conditioning hike on foggy, drizzly autumn days.
November 10, 2019 Woodswalker 7 miles 1,000 feet gained
Lovely autumn day in Forest Park. I'm still recovering from a stomach bug so the main goal was, to get out and see the leaves and the new Burnside crossover bridge. Lots of happy people and a Pileated woodpecker, doing his tree sculpting work a foot of the trail seemingly unconcerned with all the dogs, runners and the mini traffic jam of us snapping pics. Wo...

Hung out in Seaside at a friends airbnb last weekend, mostly relaxing in the hot tub and playing board games. Weather was dreary and rainy, my favorite way to enjoy the coasts doom and gloom.

Came up via Cathedral Ridge. Snow on the TT, but easy travel with microspikes. Gorgeous day, I was the only one out there.

Forgot to add this one from a few weekends ago. Lovely day spent in the mountains with friends. The road to the trailhead is a bit scary, rocks, potential slides, and some gnarly dropoffs but we didn't have a problem getting there in a Subaru. Trail was barely maintained, I recommend long pants. I did a bit of scrambling to get to the top of the ridge for fu...

Hiked this trail back in 2016 but due to foggy weather conditions could not see much. Saturday conditions were picture perfect. This is a fun challenging hike with 2 areas where you utilize ropes to scale a couple head walls. Nothing terribly technical though. The trail was snow free but pretty muddy just after The Lake of the False Prophet, which I understa...

With that wind, I decided today was a day to stay in the woods. Fun wanderings. Heard the wind roaring above me up in the canopy, but I was warm and dry in the duff below. Traveled along the western edge of the gorge fire for a bit. Found out what happens to frozen chanterelles ( they turn to soggy mush). Many of the old roads on the Bridal Veil Plateau have...

Kevin wanted to see some colors and it sure beat putting on snowshoes. We hiked to South Falls Saturday night, then the loop on Sunday and I doubled back from North Falls to South Falls looking for my cell phone. Thank you to whoever turned it into the Lodge. You made my day and my husband chose not to kill me. See, I lost my puffy the week prior.

Slept in last Sunday, but still felt like getting out. Decided to hit a close trail in the gorge with the remaining hours of daylight. Managed to fit in the loop before dark. Perfectly gloomy fall day. Others may hate the rainy season, but I love the lack of people on the trails and spooky forests.

Great day out in the Gorge. The old mossy Cedars at cedar Swamp are still doing good and I like when the days are long enough to continue on a little bit through the mossy glens and creeklets.

Armed with a few beers and a couple of North Cascades hiking guides on Saturday night, I told Eric it was his turn to pick the next hike. Weather was going to be iffy, and we knew full well we may end up having to turn around. Eric decided that we couldn't opt for anything less than a 5 star rating in the guidebook, so Trapper Peak/Thornton Lakes was chosen....

Spontaneous trip to the North Cascades in search of Larches. Teamed up with my friend from the Mazamas, Eric, leaving Portland Friday night around 7 pm. I highly recommend this late start - we were able to miss Seattle traffic and probably saved ourselves a good 1.5 to 2 hrs in driving time. We arrived in Marblemount around midnight, and quickly set up camp ...

The first 3 miles is nice old growth with a water fall thrown in at the mile and a half mark. Once you reach the ridge at approx. 3 miles take the faint climbers trail to the left and the trail will meander along the ridge for a bit and will end at Florence Peak.

Not supposed to do this in the snow. We're idiots. Broke trail from Boot Lake all the way over to Whittier. Some really sketchy sections on the traverse. Glorious day.

Biked from Bass Lake to the old parking area near Aldrich Butte-avoided all those dull miles from the Bonneville TH. Went around Aldrich and up over Cedar to the PCT. The trails around Cedar mountain are overgrown, not used much these days because of the access issues. Only saw 4 people near the end on the PCT.

Adventurous Young Mazamas hike I forgot to log from a few weeks ago, led by my friend Matt Reeder. The drive started out in a downpour, but it stopped by the time we reached the trailhead. Beautiful day on a trail I have avoided due to popularity. We were initially going to do Whetstone Mountain, but could see that it was not going to be a day for views and ...

Did this as a shuttle trip with two long-legged friends. We approached from the north via Doctor Creek and camped above Ruth Lake. The weather came in and we fretted all night in our tents with blustery winds and rain wondering about the possibility of continuing on. Lucky us, we awoke to blue skies and decided to go for it despite the fierce wind gusts. Aft...

Went out with a friend on their birthday hike. We had wanted to get up above Mississippi Head on Hood, but the weather was not conducive. So instead we did a hike in the Badger Wilderness which promised more sunshine. Fall colors were only to be found in a few spots. But it was a great way to celebrate a birthday and the Equinox.

Just wanted to take advantage of a small window of rain free time and catch some stars. We slept under the Big Dipper and the Milky Way and got some nice photos. This morning, we hiked out in a little bit of spit, but the rain held off until we were on our way home.

I have to say, I’m having a hard time doing a write up of this climb. Failure is a hard thing to admit, especially when it takes you 10 hours to get there. Which is why I’m awake at 6 am with a mind that won’t shut off. Write-ups of Borah make it sound straight forward, yes, the ridge is exposed, but – you are weak if you “chicken out”. I don’t agree at all....

Great day to be out on the mountain. Walked up to about 7600' then ambled east cross country to the Timberline Trail. I like to cutoff the TT before it heads down to Lamberson and walk over to the one of the major forks that feeds Newton just below the glacier. It was super muddy and raging. Glad I wasn't trying to cross today! The flowers of course are most...
