September 1 to September 2, 2019 runandsew 7.5 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

Had a chance to go out with our son and a few friends. The friends cancelled, so we spent a windy night (put some rocks in our tent) with our adult son and then hiked in the morning. Lots of stars and The Milky Way.

August 30 to September 1, 2019 Jen 14.5 miles 4,250 feet gained 2 nights

I was all packed up for a climb in the North Cascades, when the forecast turned (again!) and our trip was cancelled. The leader had proposed an alternative peak bagging type trip in the Chiwawa area, and all the pictures were so tantalizing, I decided to go. In the end, no one else was interested so this was another solo. The Trinity parking lot was overflow...

August 26, 2019 Woodswalker 13.2 miles 2,000 feet gained

Had a great meander through the meadows and lakes at Jefferson Park. The flowers are mostly gone except in the wet areas. There was a really nice bloom at the South Breitenbush Meadows just past Park Lake. No bugs, not many people, and glorious views.

August 24, 2019 Sarah Johnson 3.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

On our last day of vacation we decided to brave the crowds and hit up Paradise on our way home as Zane had never been. We stretched our legs and just did part of the skyline trail, then turned around. The mountain was in clouds but we had a few nice views of nearby peaks. Crowds were aggravating, as we witnessed multiple dogs on trail, people feeding wildlif...

I had a fun day helping a friend restock game survey cameras for Cascadia Wild. Fun day meandering offtrail near the ski trails. I t was fun to look at the pics from the camera. There were photos of deer and a coyote or possibly a wolf. Hard to tell from the thumbnail pic we could see. Super fun day.

August 23 to August 26, 2019 runandsew 46 miles 11,500 feet gained 3 nights

Started late Friday night on the Timberline Trail and went clockwise for the first time. Last four have been counter clockwise. There were a fair amount of people doing the same loop. Great weather & very few bugs but the river crossings always get me.

August 23, 2019 Jen 13 miles 3,000 feet gained

Started low and found some chanterelles. Once I got up to the Bluff mountain trail, I had the slowest mile ever: collected 4 quarts of huckleberries. Ate plenty too!

August 22 to August 23, 2019 Sarah Johnson 9 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

While in Bellingham, Zane and I opened our maps and decided to just pick somewhere that looked interesting. We decided for a somewhat short and sweet overnight, starting at the Park Butte Trailhead, and camping along the Railroad Grade trail. (A popular climbing route for Baker) Weather was iffy, clouds blocked our views but with a little waiting Baker final...

August 21, 2019 Woodswalker 4.8 miles 250 feet gained

We needed a quick and easy hike after summiting South Sister before the car ride home. The rain caught us on the way back, but still a lovely hike.

August 20 to August 21, 2019 Sarah Johnson 8.5 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

On our second day of vacation we decided to head out into Mt Baker wilderness to avoid having to get permits for an overnight. We decided on Lake Ann, as neither of us had been in the Mt Baker area before. I heard this area was popular, but on a Tuesday night it was mostly empty. We only saw few solo backpackers, a woman and her two daughters, and group of c...

August 20 to August 21, 2019 Father Guido Sarducci 8 miles 3,250 feet gained 1 night

The Lookout can only be reserved by the volunteers who maintain it but there are some nice camping spots by a couple small ponds in the meadows below the Lookout site. There was a really nice couple manning the Lookout who gave us the full Monty tour of the place and told us about the organization they volunteer with which maintains the Lookout.

August 20, 2019 Woodswalker 12.2 miles 4,750 feet gained

The highest I've ever been. Amazing day up the mountain. Views galore. So glad I could do this one.

August 19, 2019 Sarah Johnson 11 miles 3,500 feet gained

Had a week off to adventure north. Left on Sunday from Portland, setting up basecamp at Marble Creek campground in Marblemount. Being a Sunday night, we didn't have a problem finding a campsite. We hit up the ranger station to ask about permits for multiple areas we wanted to backpack, and were mostly told they weren't available or weren't available until da...

August 17 to August 18, 2019 runandsew 7 miles 3,250 feet gained 1 night

A quick overnight on the PCT, then a zip up to Palmer and back down. Well, not exactly a zip, but I only crawled in two spots.

August 17, 2019 Jen 7 miles 3,000 feet gained

Went out on the glacier with rope team and wandered. Surreal. There is a cave, but we didnt get close. We found what looked like a piece of landing gear. We found later that last January there was a plane crash up here. SAR came up and found the guy and hauled out most of the plane parts, but missed this bit.

August 14, 2019 Woodswalker 10 miles 2,750 feet gained

We ran out of time to make it to the top of Barrett Spur, but managed to make it up to about 7300 feet and a beautiful view. Amazing day.

August 13 to August 15, 2019 Jen 13.5 miles 750 feet gained 2 nights

Spent a few days enjoying Mother Nature's beautiful sculptural works at her most glorious museum! Sea lions, eagles, otters, kingfisher, mergansers and the distant spout of a whale. Hour long sunset, mesmerizing tidal flow, seastacks and waves.

August 12 to August 13, 2019 pizza pal 3.5 miles 1,250 feet gained 1 night

Wildhorse Lake, nothing short of majestic. Had the lake all to myself, transcendent.

August 11 to August 12, 2019 Jen 18 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

My Black Peak climb was cancelled, and I had 10 days off! What to do...... It looked like the earliest weather clearing was actually on the Olympic Peninsula, so I headed up there instead. Still had to wait out some rainshowers the first day, so I stayed at Lake Quinault for a night and explored around the lake on Sunday. On Monday, I headed up the W Fork of...

August 6, 2019 Woodswalker 3 miles 250 feet gained

Just a short leg stretcher post work from Clear Lake a few miles up the Blue Box trail.

August 5, 2019 Woodswalker 8.1 miles 1,250 feet gained

Wandered the Timberline Trail over to Heather Canyon and then off trailed it for about a half mile up stream to check out all the waterfalls up that canyon. The flowers were fading a bit on the main trail but around water and up the canyon it was still glorious.

August 2 to August 4, 2019 Father Guido Sarducci 11.5 miles 7,250 feet gained 2 nights

I have a friend who is climbing the Bulger Top 100 Peaks and he asked if I was interesting in a 3 day 2 night backpacking trip which would include a climb of Mt. Stuart using the Cascadian Couloir route. I climbed Stuart via this route many years ago and was not really interested in doing it again but told him I would go on the trip and climb as far as the u...

August 1 to August 4, 2019 Jen 37.5 miles 11,750 feet gained 3 nights

Oh my, this area is so beautiful! White Pass covered in wildflowers and marmots. Whitechuck Basin otherworldly with green lakes and massive erratic boulders below a rapidly receding glacier. We had some weather challenges on the approach, but summit day was perfect!

July 31, 2019 Woodswalker 3.3 miles 750 feet gained

I had to scout a field trip, so I made a quick jaunt up above the Timberline Lodge to check on the bloom. It's looking good, mostly buckwheats. and some penstemons. Sadly, I ran out of time to go further.

July 28, 2019 runandsew 4.5 miles 2,250 feet gained

My son was interested in hiking where there was a view. Well, we were in a cloud the entire time. It was nice regardless.

July 28, 2019 Father Guido Sarducci 9.5 miles 4,750 feet gained

Paradise was outrageously crowded. We got there @ 8:30AM and the main parking lot was already full. Crowds pretty much everywhere until you got up to Pebble Creek. From there the crowds thinned out as that's where the snow really takes over and the climb up to Camp Muir begins in earnest. Lot's of people at Muir preparing for the summit push. The temps and wi...

July 27 to July 28, 2019 runandsew 8.5 miles 2,500 feet gained 1 night

Just wanted to catch some stars and this was Plan B. We were headed to Badger Creek Wilderness when we decided to switch plans. It turned into a lovely night.

July 25, 2019 Woodswalker 12.6 miles 3,000 feet gained

Besides being lovely the bonus on this one is that it get's you up on Adams south side in two hours from Portland. It also has minimal gravel road driving and the gravel part is actually in fairly good shape. The the first 3ish miles of the trail are faint and I definitely wandered off a few times, but basically you just follow the Aiken Lava beds up. There ...

July 22, 2019 Woodswalker 12 miles 2,500 feet gained

The flowers are drying out a bit but it's still amazing. I always feel like I am visiting a new world, where life is just starting when I'm at Mt St Helens. Beautiful day in the Monument.

July 20 to July 21, 2019 runandsew 3 miles 750 feet gained 1 night

We just wanted a few photos and to try out our Hydro Flask as a growler. Got it all and saw a bunch of PCT thru hikers.

July 19 to July 20, 2019 Sarah Johnson 12 miles 5,000 feet gained 1 night

Another climb in the bag outside of my comfort zone. I was the only noob on a small and experienced Mazama climb team led by Larry Buzan with Jeffery Welter assisting. Having never been to the North Cascades, I applied for the climb because I thought it would be a non technical scramble. Not so! The initial 2 miles was relatively easy, a good trail with rela...

July 16 to July 17, 2019 Jen 14.5 miles 4,000 feet gained 1 night

What a lovely climb! I did this with my son's outdoor club Post 58(although he wasnt on this climb). One of the assistants had to cancel, so I volunteered to fill in. Fun to adventure with a bunch of teenagers with climbing skills and enthusiasm for the great outdoors. Conditions perfect- masses of butterflies on top.

July 7, 2019 Sarah Johnson 4 miles 750 feet gained

So many F words were uttered as we overtook the rhododendrons and scrambled down steep slopes with the help of veggie belay. Today was an off trail waterfall chase to remember. Multiple tiers were found- and multiple scratches were had. I love a good challenge and today delivered. I have to thank my friend Matt Reeder for leading his birthday hike to such an...

July 5, 2019 Jen 7 miles 3,500 feet gained

In the Julian Alps of Slovenia. Fun and very challenging hike using the via ferrata. After hiking up to a massive hole in the mountain called the "Prisank window#1", there was a long airy scramble on the ridge to gain the summit. In spots where the exposure was frightening, they have pegs and cables to clip into. I did this as a loop and the downclimb throug...

July 3, 2019 Jen 6 miles 1,000 feet gained

On our way to the idyllic hut Postarski Dom, where we stayed for two nights. We hiked up an old road built by Russian POWs during WW1.

July 3 to July 5, 2019 Father Guido Sarducci 19.72 miles 5,750 feet gained 2 nights

I have hiked up to the upper lake several times but have never done the scramble up Mt. Lena. It was really foggy at the lake when I arrived on the 3rd so I had my doubts whether the Lena climb was in the cards. Woke up early on the 4th to clear sunny weather so it was go time. Hiked the Scout Lake trail to a small unamed lake and then assended Mt. Lena via ...
