This was a 33 mile bike trip, but I did stop and hike up the Harris Canyon and another gully. Wanted to log it here just so I could post some pictures! It was so very beautiful. The best part is between mp 10 and 13- such excellent basalt formations, pinnacles and caves, all inviting exploration. I want to go back soon and camp. Hard to travel across a scree...

Struggling with my asthma and SAD. Got a good fix up from the forest. Found an interesting rogue trail, with art. Pretty soaked.

January 26, 2020 Jen 6 miles 500 feet gained

Helping out with Mazamas Nordic Ski School, assisting with the same class I took 5 years ago! It was slow going for our novice skiiers, but I did get a good little workout in when I had to accompany some folks out early, up and down the same road twice.

January 25, 2020 Father Guido Sarducci 10.95 miles 2,500 feet gained

Hiked Hugo Peak, Trail of the Giants and to Little Mashel Falls. With all the rainfall we have had the falls were really thundering.

January 25, 2020 Woodswalker 10.6 miles 2,000 feet gained

Lots of clearcuts, but beautiful creeks and moss. There are some super nice sections of the trail with creeks and mossy trees. No rain and a nice view of distant snowy peaks.

January 20, 2020 Jen 12 miles 1,500 feet gained

Starting from about MP 9 on Larch Mountain Road(where they stopped plowing). Grueling uphill grind through heavy wet snow. Was pleased to have mild winds and some views under the cloud deck at the summit. Totally gassed afterward.

January 19, 2020 Sarah Johnson 5 miles 500 feet gained

Recent snow made this much harder than it should have been. I had snowshoes and my partner did not - so we turned around when we reached the actual trailhead because he couldn't keep up post holing and his shoes were too wet. It was a good workout so not a wasted day.

January 19, 2020 Jen 6 miles 750 feet gained

Another exploration of our wonderful urban trails. I forgot how gorgeous Balch Creek Canyon is, very quiet in the morning, and then extremely crowded in the afternoon on return. Instead of going up to Pittock Mansion, I looped the Audobon trails. The Collins Sanctuary was delightful. Looks so pretty with NO IVY!

January 16, 2020 Jen 4 miles 750 feet gained

Variation on the last trip, just wanted to explore more of this trail system. Trails are quieter than Forest Park, but the ivy is frightening in some areas.

January 6, 2020 Jen 3.5 miles 500 feet gained

New trail to me-connects lower part of Germantown Rd to Leif Ericson drive. Evidence of old homesite. Muddy and slippery fun.

January 4, 2020 Woodswalker 6.1 miles 0 feet gained

Just a double report because the last one goofed up my mileage and wouldn't let me edit or delete

January 4, 2020 Woodswalker 1 miles 1,500 feet gained

Did a one way from the Herman Creek TH to Bridge of the Gods with a friend. I've been trying to do easier hikes to rebuild my strength after a couple months of being sick. This was perfect! Water flow is good in the falls right now and you could see snow up on the Benson Plateau. Looked like it started at maybe 2500 -3000'. Great day.

January 3, 2020 Woodswalker 10.4 miles 1,250 feet gained

The forest was pretending to be a summer day today. Except for the very full stream crossings as I got further up. Water, moss, blue sky, warm breeze. Just what I needed to start the year.

January 2 to January 3, 2020 Jen 18 miles 5,250 feet gained 1 night

A challenging trip in the desert to start the year. Went up Tanque Verde Ridge to camp at Juniper Basin, 6000 ft where there was some crusty snow. We set up camp then climbed Tanque Verde Peak. Sun went down and temps plummeted. Cold night in the tent, need to fix that situation.

December 29 to December 30, 2019 runandsew 5 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

Backpacked with our two sons on the best weather window of the few days we all had free.

December 29, 2019 Woodswalker 9.6 miles 2,000 feet gained

Great day hiking from Multnomah Falls up to Nesika Lodge. The lodge's members were staying up there for New Years and were welcoming hikers with a hot cup of tea and a tour of the lodge. So glad this didn't burn in the fire.

December 29, 2019 Jen 8 miles 1,000 feet gained

Wanted to try out the new bridge over Burnside. Moving slow, really struggling with my asthma these days. Took over an hour for bronchospasm to subside.

December 28, 2019 Woodswalker 8 miles 1,250 feet gained

Great day and great company checking a section of the Wilson River Trail. We started from the Diamond Mill OHV area and hiked east through the Lester Creek Section, which was surprisingly beautiful. Lots of lush moss and ferns and great sneak peaks towards the Coastal Mountains. Awesome day,

December 26, 2019 Woodswalker 7.6 miles 1,250 feet gained

Great day with just enough clouds for some interesting skies at the top. There was packed ice for about a quarter mile form the trailhead. Then frozen dirt up to Mirror Lake and well packed snow to TDH Ridge. Wonderful day.

December 24, 2019 Woodswalker 6.7 miles 1,000 feet gained

Did my first recovery hike, post a long bout with the flu. I did great. almost 7 miles in snowshoes and no big coughing episodes! We came in from the Frog Lake side and there was really only a dusting of snow over bare dirt in most places. More depth around the lakes. Microspikes would have been fine. Even the snow didn't melt on us. It was cold enough that ...

December 17, 2019 Jen 3 miles 750 feet gained

I'm helping with another wildlife cam. Today was maintenance day. Got some great shots of the elusive Sierra Nevada Red Fox, one of our target species. Will post pics soon. Fun to snowshoe again! See video link attached!

December 15, 2019 Father Guido Sarducci 6.59 miles 3,250 feet gained

Started at the lower TH and snow begin a bit before the upper TH. That's where I put on the micro spikes. Was able to take the summer trail all the way to the summit.

December 14 to December 15, 2019 Sarah Johnson 12 miles 1,250 feet gained 1 night

Did an overnight last weekend with my hiking friend Nicole, parking at a turnout near Tillamook Head Trailhead (No overnight parking allowed.) Stayed at the hikers camp, setting up my tent inside one of the hiker shelters with the mice. (I forgot my footprint and it was raining.) Stayed toasty and warm inside, and was surprisingly unbothered by mice. In the ...

December 14, 2019 Jen 8.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

My old stomping grounds. Did a loop with the section 36, Powder House and TNT trail.

December 9, 2019 Father Guido Sarducci 6 miles 2,250 feet gained

The hike to the falls is a nice hike on a foggy, drizzly day. Hike is mostly snow free which is odd for this time of season. Snow began in earnest a bit above the falls and and It looked like I was the first person to venture past the falls in a while as I broke trail pretty much to Van Trump Park.

December 7, 2019 Sarah Johnson 6 miles 750 feet gained

Just some fun on the mountain with my friend Eric testing out gear. (He had some new mountaineering boots to try out, and I wanted to try out my snowshoes.) Only one person ahead of us on the trail, who turned around and then it was our turn to break trail. Mileage wasn't our goal, but goofing around in the snow was. A nice day.

December 5, 2019 Jen 7.5 miles 500 feet gained

The traverse is not terrible yet!

December 2, 2019 Jen 4 miles 750 feet gained

Fambligations have been keeping me close to home. Chilly day. Wandering amongst the relics. Postholing through thigh deep maple leaves and zigzagging through devils club stalks can be fun if you have no particular agenda.

November 30, 2019 Sarah Johnson 6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Birthday hike. First did the River Trail with Zane and the dog. It was pretty cold and we were worried Lily would get too cold. When we got back to the cutoff for Misery Ridge, Zane looked at me and knew I wanted to give it a go. Zane and dog went to the heat of the car, and I set a turnaround time of a half an hour, and up I went. Didn't quite make it to th...
