May 10, 2013 B-Dog 6 miles 3,750 feet gained

Left work early on Friday to go squeeze out the last bit of sunshine, before the rain comes again. After reading reports and seeing the memorial for the climber that died up on Granite by an avalanche on April 13th, we were all thinking of Mitch as we climbed on into the sunset last night. It sounds like he was a great man and an avid mountaineer. He will be...

The Wapack Trail is a 21 mile interstate trail from Mt. Watatic in Ashburnham, MA, to North Pack Monadnock in Greenfield, NH. The trail is broken up into three sections. I planned to do about 13 miles the first day since the second day had rain in the forecast. The trail is easy to follow up Mt. Watatic, but the trail guide was really unclear on how to conti...

May 6, 2013 Scott 14.2 miles 5,500 feet gained

I decided to head for the often overlooked, Augspurger Mountain. I'm amazed that more people don't venture beyond the junction of Augspurger and Dog Mountain trails. But I'm not about to complain, I enjoy the serenity! I got a fairly late start, but with some extra layer's and headlamp in my pack, I wasn't concerned. I left the Dog Mountain trailhead at exac...

May 6, 2013 Bosterson 10 miles 3,750 feet gained

Back again with Elsie. Since Wednesday: mud on Dick Thomas has dried. Plants have doubled in size. Bugs have hatched. Super hot. Summit picnic included fruit, homemade chocolate truffles, and chilled gewurztraminer. Descended the NW Ridge.

This trail off of Irish Settlement just past Hammond Hill Rd officially opens on May 31 but it's already available. We took the blue trail (me on foot, Gregg on unicycle). Lovely forest cover, some really dark sections and beautiful sunlight at 5pm. There's a pretty meandering creek area and a flood plain, and lots of little waterfalls. We didn't get very fa...

same ol same ol. climb helens, ski down. sticky snow down low. but good bob-sled run once into the trees. skied from top to edge of parking lot. cheers

May 5, 2013 RenegadePilgrim 5 miles 2,500 feet gained

I had originally set out to do the Kings Mt./Elk Mt. Loop of 11 miles. However, after hiking 9 miles the day before on 3 hours of sleep, my body rebelled big time! I made the decision half-way up Kings Mt. that I was just going to the summit and back. It made more sense than doing something unsafe, like hiking while exhausted. That's just a recipe for disast...

May 5, 2013 Outside + Stuff 12.1 miles 4,250 feet gained

Started at the Iron Creek Trailhead and made my way along the Teanaway Ridge. the second half, towards Red Top was still under snow and there were no other tracks to guide me so I had to switch over to GPS to navigate the harder parts of the hike. Made it all the way to Red Top Mountain before turning around.

May 4, 2013 Chris 9 miles 1,750 feet gained

After North Lake, headed up to Larch. The gate is still closed and there is a good bit of snow 2 miles from the parking lot downward. The trail has very little if no snow by now.

May 4, 2013 Chris 11 miles 2,250 feet gained

Started up Wyeth, wasn't a fan of the exposure on that trail, so I drove around to the back of Defiance and hiked North Lake from the back. Snow started around 3800'.

May 4, 2013 RenegadePilgrim 9 miles 1,750 feet gained

Five hikers, three dogs. I worked the night before and was operating on three hours of sleep. Not the best way to do a hike, but I think the two energy drinks I had kept me going all day because I seemed to be functioning rather well in the morning. We started out at the Oswald West S.P. parking lot, wandering through the forest to the Short Sand Beach to ad...

May 4, 2013 The Angry Hiker 6 miles 4,000 feet gained

Holy crap was it packed. My plan was to sneak up there early and kick the mailbox down the back side of the peak, but there was already a small crowd of eyeballs watching me by the time I got there. I might do this one again on a rainy day.

May 4, 2013 Father Guido Sarducci 6 miles 3,000 feet gained

At about 4750' the trail is completely covered by snow . There is a fairly clear foot path from there which goes straight up to the 6250' summit.

May 4, 2013 Karl 10 miles 4,500 feet gained

Took the south ridge route up Silver Star. Lots of snow up high, especially in the woods, but most everything below 3500' was dry and snow-free. Lots of time so we looped the southwest ridge, tagging Pyramid Rock, before returning back down the south ridge again.

May 3 to May 5, 2013 Roman 24 miles 3,500 feet gained 2 nights

Did a loop clockwise; skipped a spur to S Wildcat Campground this time but added a short bushwhack to Whistler Point. Quite a wind storm on Saturday & many logs crashed down. Camped on Agate Beds the second night (even my fire ring was 40% agates) - pretty cool. Saw only a group of 2 + dog in three days. I like how remote this area feels; of course on Memori...

May 3, 2013 Bosterson 7.5 miles 3,500 feet gained

From GCC - parked on the frontage road in Dodson, went up Tumalt Creek, then up the first gully east of Yeon onto the NE Buttress to a fabulous viewpoint past the saddle. Then up the NE Ridge to the plateau. Down ROA and back via the 400 and the road. No technical gear needed.

May 3, 2013 Jen 5 miles 5,500 feet gained

Well I'll just count the uphill part because it was sort of like hiking. We rented AT skis and skinned up to about 6000 feet. Then we climbed the rest of the way up to the summit. Glissaded back down to our skis and zoomed out. What a hoot!

May 2, 2013 Tracy S 2.5 miles 0 feet gained

I walked/Gregg unicycled the Jim Schug Trail that runs along the lake. The trail was originally an old rail line, and has since been converted into about 4.2 miles of trail for walking, biking, etc. Lovely scenery, lots of plants and wildlife (turtles, minks, geese, squirrels, fish, birds).

May 2, 2013 Karl 10.5 miles 4,000 feet gained

Afternoon run up Table, because it was clear. Last time up, we were in a whiteout and couldn't see squat. Gorgeous today! Still daylight left, on the way down, so I detoured up to the top of Aldrich Butte too.

May 1, 2013 The Angry Hiker 6 miles 2,500 feet gained

Ran up to West Tiger 3, then over to West Tiger 2, then Back to West Tiger 3, for a grand total of 8 West Tigers.

April 28, 2013 DDBowdoin 3 miles 750 feet gained

Overall, this was a great hike for my wife and I. We've always tried to take some time to get out and get some fresh air but recently we've been trying to make an effort to hike more. It's a great way to remain active and try and lose some of those excess pounds. My wife is in pretty good shape, I just wish I could say the same for myself. But, you have to s...

April 28, 2013 The Angry Hiker 6 miles 1,000 feet gained

This is going to be a routine hike so I'm going to put the accumulated mileage and elevation on one post. By the end of the year, this should look like Mt. Everest.

April 28, 2013 The Angry Hiker 9 miles 2,500 feet gained

Rounding out my "Fecal Trifecta" of poop-themed hikes, East Rattlesnake Poop is the highpoint on Rattlesnake Ridge. There was zero visibility on this rainy day, so I was deprived of some great views of the freeway.

April 28, 2013 Nat Turner 9.5 miles 500 feet gained

Rattlesnake Buzzed us on the road. He did NOT have permission for a Fly-by. I'm revoking his Flight Status. GROUNDED. (Get it? Grounded, He's a Snake. Ha.) Sightings in Order. Osprey with Fish Bomb. Adult Bald Eagle - SKY BOSS. Golden Marmots, Coyote Jaw with Tooth. Several Rattlesnakes. A Huge Gopher Snake. Lots of Western Fence Lizards. Catahoula Leopard D...

April 27 to April 28, 2013 JM 10.5 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

Overnighter in Eagle Creek. Lots of Boy Scouts groups on the trail. Hiked up to beautiful Tunnel Falls where you walk behind the waterfall through a tunnel. Camped near the river between Wy'East camp and Blue Grouse Camp. Spotted Osprey feeding their young on the opposite side of the valley.

April 27, 2013 Chris 11.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Went almost to about the Kinzel Lake turn off. Another nice day!
