May 25, 2013 Ken 12 miles 3,500 feet gained

This was a great day. Snow untrammeled by human foot, animal tracks everywhere. Great weather with sunny skies for the most part. The trek was challenging and rewarding with great views and even wolverine tracks found atop Jove. Started out from Smithfield Road, still under a couple feet of snow. After a couple of miles of drudgery we headed up from the road...

May 25, 2013 Stacey 7.5 miles 750 feet gained

Hiked Siouxon Creek to the creek crossing just before the bridge. The water was running high and fast over smooth rock. Opted not to chance the crossing and headed back.

May 25 to May 27, 2013 Elsie 16 miles 3,000 feet gained 2 nights

Set out for Siouxon Creek and Horseshoe Ridge this soggy Memorial Weekend. Quick report: Horseshoe still has some light snow and blowover on the north side of the ridge. The trail towards the top of the ridge is light in some places, but it just follows the ridge so it's pretty navigable. I had planned to to Huffman Peak as well, but opted not due to the two...

May 24 to May 26, 2013 isaac 15.5 miles 3,500 feet gained 2 nights

Family hike (mother-, father-, and two sister-in-laws, plus my wife). 3 days, two nights. Absolutely incredible. It was a difficult hike, but well worth it. Saw the sun set and moon rise on Gregory Bald. Deer were grazing and walking up close to you.

May 24 to May 26, 2013 Roman 22.25 miles 3,750 feet gained 2 nights

Did the loop from lower trailhead, with 2 mile hike on the road after bottoming my car on a rock and breaking some steering (?) part. The car drives well, but I didn't want to risk more. Also explored ATV road that goes up the other side of the canyon (thought about finding a better public road access from S side, but soon run into property boundary). Got ra...

May 24, 2013 Jen 6 miles 250 feet gained

Little leg stretcher on a drippy morning.

May 23, 2013 Courtney Basik 5.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

This was one of my favorite hikes if the spring/summer because the wildflowers were blooming like crazy and the air was so fresh. One of the most relaxing hikes I have ever experienced, not because it wasn't challenging, but because the atmosphere and surroundings of the hike were so serene. The cave we were hiking to was closed, but we still enjoyed having ...

May 20, 2013 RenegadePilgrim 2.6 miles 750 feet gained

I am spending time this summer for one week as an adult mentor for Big City Mountaineers (BCM). This organization takes kids into the woods who normally wouldn't have the opportunity to learn about the outdoors. One of the prep hikes was on May 20th with a short hike to Horsetail Falls. It was a chance to meet the kids for the first time and introduce them s...

May 20, 2013 Elsie 15 miles 6,000 feet gained

Kinda not-so-creative hike, but I was already meeting friends mid-morning, so decided to have a pre-dawg Dog warm-up. Just took the typical scenic trail up and down x 2, plus escorted the last few of the group up to the top after I was already on my second run down. Flowers are still out all over the place! Poison oak everywhere. Beautiful, sunny day. 1st ru...

May 20, 2013 The Angry Hiker 7.5 miles 4,250 feet gained

Mailbox Peak is 4100 feet of elevation in 3 miles. It starts out steep and stays steep. The whole trail is nothing but mud, and roots, and human skulls from trailhead to summit. It's a serious hike for serious hikers only, and if you can't hack it, then maybe you should take your poodle up Navajo Peak or some other girly Eastern Washington cakewalk that draw...

May 19, 2013 B-Dog 8 miles 3,500 feet gained

New Summit - 4 of 20 for the Year 2013 Set out early this morning with Keetann and Mindy. It was the first climb of the year for all 3 of us as a group. It felt great to spend some time out in the wilderness with them again. The forecast for western Washington looked grey and damp, so we looked east and found some sunshine in Teanaway. After a rainy drive ov...

May 18, 2013 RenegadePilgrim 5.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

I joined a few friends of mine for a quick hike of Saddle Mountain. I've never been up here before so I was looking forward to the view at the top. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. We made it through the forest, with sporadic rain showers, then started the jaunt up the saddle area where the wind picked up and the low cloud cover made it impossib...

May 18, 2013 Karl 24 miles 3,750 feet gained

Went with three friends from PortlandHikers, and had a terribly terrific time hiking close to 24 miles in the rain on this 33rd anniversary of MSH "big one." We started at Elk Creek campground just after 7:00am, and finished at Keenig Creek trailhead about 5:30pm, with numerous little side trips along the way. Saw lots of waterfalls, clouds, rock formations,...

May 18 to May 19, 2013 Chris 30.5 miles 4,000 feet gained 1 night

Saturday, I decided to head up to the East Fork of the Quinault for the weekend. The forecast was rain with a chance of rain, but I was in the mood for some bear watching. While the bear totals were 1, the weather panned out to be better than expected. Last time I did this hike in 2011, I did it on a Friday and saw no one after mile 4. This time, there were ...

May 17, 2013 Jen 12 miles 5,000 feet gained

Pleasant day and solitude on this loop up Starvation Ridge. Most of the snow is gone except for a few drifts on the north side above 4000 ft. Views were limited, but the wildflowers were delightful.

May 17, 2013 Bosterson 14 miles 4,750 feet gained

Started at Oneonta with plans to go OT to Waespe Pt. Mid gully changed tack and went up the west side to a different viewpoint, then up the ridge to pop out at Bickel Pt. and Nesika Lodge. (Old guy at Nesika says Bickel Pt. is actually Waespe?) Then up the cutoff to Franklin Ridge, to Oneonta Tr to Larch Mtn in intermittent rain. Down Larch Tr, across Multno...

May 16, 2013 Chris 4.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Big miles on the Douglas Trail. Was going to do McIntyre ridge, but that road takes forever to melt out (and wasn't melted out), which meant the ridge would likely be as bad. The Douglas Trail wasn't too snowy. The quarry near the parking area is totally covered in shotgun casings. No views from the top of Wildcat, but there are several nice overlooks. I'm a...

May 15, 2013 S Ryan 3.1 miles 500 feet gained

Took the GF out for a hike up to the Natural Bridge earlier this year. She'd never been up there. It was a cooler day but warm enough to hike in short sleeves. We even worked up a good sweat by the time we made it to the top. Nice little hike for the day.

May 15, 2013 Bosterson 29 miles 7,500 feet gained

Started at Herman Cr 7am. Up Nick Eaton to GPM and some light rain, down Waucoma Ridge and after getting a little lost in the snow, out to Tomlike. Then back to the snow and over to Chinidere (direct, up the back side). Summit beer and chocolate covered espresso beans. Down onto PCT and booked it up over the Platter and back down to HC by 8pm. Easiest long h...

May 13, 2013 Allison 9 miles 2,000 feet gained

A climb up the highest peak in Virginia (5,729') with the bonus of seeing many, many ponies. Full trip report on the blog.

May 13, 2013 Courtney Basik 5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Since we loved Beaver Mountain so much when we went in September of 2012, we took Jessica there when she came to visit. I felt like a power hiker with a baby strapped to my chest for the first half of the hike. We saw elk, deer, wild turkey, and quail. We had to track through a bit of snow too, which we were not expecting.

May 13, 2013 Roman 9.22 miles 3,250 feet gained

Did Lookout Mountain via Gumjuwac Saddle. 2-3 spots of snow about 100 yards wide just before Gumjuwac, some snow on Bennett Pass Rd, then nothing until about 5800 feet when I lost the trail. Saw only 1 other person all day, and couple of deer; heard a cougar screaming. The rain didn't come until we drove home. Great day.

May 12, 2013 JM 7.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

Dayhike up Dog Mountain. Took the "less difficult" route up, passed Lady Slipper orchids, chocolate lillies, Columbia Wind Flower, and Queens Cup. Nearing the top, you walk through hillsides covered in Arrowleaf Balsamroot, a yellow flower. The views were non-existant at first due to thick clouds. We were disappointed, but took a well deserved lunchbreak at ...

May 12 to May 13, 2013 RenegadePilgrim 7 miles 2,500 feet gained 1 night

I got up to the Sno Park late...about 9p because I missed the turnoff for it. I didn't feel like pitching a tent or even sleeping in the bed of my truck so I got all of my gear set up and ready to go for an early morning start. It was remarkably warm up there and I found myself way too warm in my sleeping bag in the cab of my truck. I got a solid 6 hours or ...

May 12, 2013 Nat Turner 13.1 miles 3,000 feet gained

First time down Franklin Ridge to Multnomah Basin. Big Lap, My back hurts. My dog is Happy. The last 2.3 miles and 400' suck. But Multnomah Falls was classic on Mothers Day. Strollers, Complainers, Flip-flops, Where is the top? I almost recorded the hilarious convo's.

May 12, 2013 Karl 22.5 miles 5,000 feet gained

Went up Hamilton the normal way, with a detour along the cliffs of Little Hamilton. Then just continued NNW, out past the state park boundary, until I hit a clearcut. Looped around to the far side of Hardy Ridge, bushwhacked up to Phlox Point, and enjoyed a few more views. Coming down, I realized there was still lots of day left, so I took the chance to expl...

May 12 to May 13, 2013 Elsie 7 miles 2,500 feet gained 1 night

Hiked into what we knew was going to be a soggy Mother's Day. The mountain had record permit numbers on beautiful Saturday - 649 climbers!! The parking lot was a craziness of cars and costumes and parties when we arrived in the evening. It was so balmy all evening and night that the snow was still slushy when we set off at 4am. Wore microspikes in some parts...

May 11, 2013 Water (Matt) 7 miles 5,500 feet gained

been a while after a lot of talk and attempts to finally top out via this route. nice to carry the skis up and over as well. afterwards headed to the deschutes for the stonefly hatch and some trout fishing.

May 11, 2013 Scott 15.75 miles 4,750 feet gained

I started towards Larch Mountain from Multnomah Falls at 1:30pm. My energy level was a bit on the low side all day, but I just took my time and made it to Sherrard Point. Its nice to have Sherrard all to yourself on a clear afternoon, something that is only possible before the snow gate is open. Speaking of snow... The parking lot still had several feet of s...

May 11, 2013 Parrot 6 miles 750 feet gained

This was the first trip of the year for me after a long hiatus. I was looking for a moderate hike to test out long stored gear and long stored legs. The day could not have been better with nearly 85 degrees at mid-day. Not surprisingly there was a bit of humidity and a few more bugs than anticipated. Note that this hike begins on the Oregon side of the Colum...

May 11 to May 12, 2013 Kyle Meyer 11.5 miles 4,000 feet gained 1 night

Our original plan was Bear Lake, but it was sufficiently hot-as-hell out to make stopping at North Lake an easy decision. This trail is cruel and unusual—unyieldingly steep throughout. It will be a while before I do this trail again. The lake itself was okay—shallow with a mud bottom. I caught a few decent sized eastern brook trout near the outlet on wet fli...

May 11, 2013 Chris 25.5 miles 5,000 feet gained

10:30 AM start from Tooth Rock, 8:00 PM finish. Was just going to do Tanner, but my time was looking good. Nice views from the top. Did the old highway instead of the 400 to get from the hatchery back to the Tooth. There was a 1/2 mile stretch of snow behind Tanner, and a few spots here and there above 4000', but everything else was clear. Eagle Creek crossi...

May 11, 2013 Bosterson 7 miles 5,750 feet gained

Interesting conditions on Hood after all the heat - crevasses and bergschrund opened up on the glaciers. A little icy in the Hourglass but fun climbing. Old Chute was steeper and more frozen than previously, making the decent a little harder. Super slushy below the Hogsback. About a million people on the south side.
