Another gorgeous day. Lot of snow still on the ground for glissades. Also managed to get some rock scrambling in. Tremendous views, including Ranier and Adams. Not a soul to be seen anywhere, only a squirrel up at the lookout who was kind enough to pose for some pics.

Baby's Alfie's third hike. We did the southern half of the Piedra Lisa Trail in the Sandia Mountains. Mainly desert/foothills kind of scenery and vegetation, which isn't my favorite, but no hike is a bad hike. It was extremely hot so it was a bit uncomfortable. The next day we found out they were closing down all the Sandia Mountains trails due to the hot we...

It was a short hike today, due to a busy schedule and an unfortunate sidewall flat (didn't see the rock through the dust cloud from the car in front of me). But it was a nice little hike with some great views. Thanks to Tom K. for such great effort on maintaining this place! Snow on about 1/3 of the trail, which made for two minor gettings lost. Not a big de...

Perfect bluebird conditions led to an awesome day going up Ruckel Ridge, meandering all around the Benson Plateau, and then descending the (brutal) Ruckel Creek trail. It's really a one-way hike, so if you go plan to go in that direction. Wouldn't be very fun the other way, despite how hard the descent trail is on the knees. Very fun ascent, though! Fascinat...

Hike 2 of 2 for the day. I took advantage of the exempt day for the Discovery Pass as I've yet to give in on that one. It will happen sooner or later though. Probably sooner rather than later actually. There are some great viewpoints along the way making the ascent seem easier.

This was hike 1 of 2 for the day so I hit the trailhead early. When I arrived at 630, there was only one other car in the lot. It was a peaceful morning as I didn't see anyone until I was past the 5 mile mark of the hike and half way back to the rig. I really enjoyed the hike, although I thought the top part of the loop was less scenic then the lower loop th...

Backpacking trip up Herman Creek. We arrived at a full parking lot so we had to park along the road. We began the long uphill trudge through the woods intending to stay the first night @ Cedar Swamp camp. Some huge trees up there! Beautiful. After setting up camp, I hiked up to Mud Lake before sunset. Not much to see, with the exception of some giant scratch...

Attempted to map all trails on Lookout Mtn to my GPS, but ran short on time for 1 more S side trail (& there's the longest north side approach but it'll wait for separate trip - i did only its upper end this time). Got up the mountain 4 times from various trails, but it's absolutely worth it - beautiful area! The desert is in bloom right now, wildlife is ple...

Another one from GCC, which calls it a "shocking line of super classic proportion" and "extreme risk." Very long approach up the Tumalt Creek drainage to a fair bit of sketchy climbing and traversing. Gear: rope, slings hitched to trees for pro and anchors. Upper tree and dirt pitches were solid type 1 fun, and I never felt (that) in danger, but this is defi...

New moon and a very dark and quiet morning on the mountain. Clear until about 7am but windy. Feeling strong at the Hogsback, but I was alone and a little scared by the looks of the traverse to the Old Chute. One rope team crossed it, but two other groups turned back here. I decided that was enough for me. I'll have to summit another day( or year).

I didn't have time to escape the city today, so I settled for the nearby Council Crest. I set off at the Terwillger Boulevard Trailhead by about 3:45pm. Within a mile, I quickly realized that either the shoes or socks weren't going to cut it. Maybe both. At the 1.7 mile mark, I reluctantly turned back for the car. It was almost laughable to think I had to ab...

Left midafternoon after work, on the trail at 5pm. Summit of Tanner at 8:30, some clouds made a bit of an early sunset but very nice out and it stayed light until near 11pm. Bivied out in the open below the summit in a nice cradle of beargrass. Up at 5am for the sunrise, leisurely breakfast, then back down the trail at 7am. Continued on to Tanner Spring (flo...

I ventured up Kings Mtn Junior trail in the evening after work. Really quite a beautiful route, if a little sketchy - I was not expecting such an unmaintained trail when I set out. It follows a rough old jeep road that is grown over with ferns and flowers, complete with rockslides, constant blowdown, and washouts for your hiking pleasure. I managed to succes...

Dayhike up Ball Point near Little Badger Creek trail. Made a loop by parking at the Little Badger Creek trailhead, hiking up a hillside meadow to the Ball Point Trailhead, and returning via Little Badger Creek Trail. Good variety of trees here, since it's near the Cascade crest where the East/West transition allows both ecosystems to exist. There is some coo...

Went out to Saddle Mountain to meet up with some friends, but wanted more of a workout....and since there aren't other mountains within reasonable driving distance (the hour drive from Kings was too far), I just did it twice. Pretty foggy early in the morning - couldn't see more than 100 yards away. But on the second run the fog and clouds had burned off and...

Overnight trip up to Boulder Lake near Mt. Hood. Started early on Sat morning and drove up to the parking lot where there were 2 other cars. Hiked 1 mile up to the lake where a family was fishing. "Juneary" fun in Indian Heaven. Wanted to make a bigger loop from Cultus Creek Campground, but was stopped by the snow on the road at about 3850'. Hard to say on snow depth on the hike - it ranged from 0-6 feet; close to 100% coverage above 4400' but even there some bare spots. Not bad at all for the season. It was COLD today, felt like mid-30's.

Got up at 4 am and carried B-Dog up Denny Mountain, a short slog up an abandoned ski slope that was pretty popular in it's hay-day. It got a little dicey near the top. I fell into a moat and B-dog was attacked by a rabid dog, but we were rewarded with some great views and some excellent glissades back down.

This trip was prompted by a few recent mentions of this area and an interest to see how high the east side of Hood was melted out. There were just a few groups at Boulder Lake, doing some fishing and camping. The road to Boulder Lake isn't bad at all, despite all the reports of bad roads in the area. There is almost no snow at Boulder and Little Boulder Lake...

I've been wanting to do Hardy Ridge for quite some time now but I haven't broke down and bought the Discovery Pass. New Summit - 5 of 20 for the Year 2013 Had a great trip out today with The Angry Hiker. With an iffy forecast, we got an early start this morning to maximize our weather window. Our mission was to find some morels on a quick overnighter. We chose Romann's trip described in the PH Field Guide, but in the reverse direction, starting at the Little Badger TH. We hiked up the Little Badger Trail, and set up camp near Helispot 122 which has a spring nearby. We then went cross country, ambling up the nearby ridge looking for morels. I thin...

I started the last leg of the Wapack Trail at Miller State Park after delays due to weather and my graduation. The trail is well travelled, and easy enough for beginners. It's about a mile and a half to the summit, then about a 3-4 mile trek through the Wapack National Wildlife Refuge to North Pack Monadnock. North Pack is smaller, and the ascent is very gra...

During a last minute camping trip, we set up camp at Mary's Lake in Estes Park, CO and then climbed up to the summit of Lily Mountain. It was challenging, since it was a pretty big climb, but extremely rewarding with expansive views of the Continental Divide. Gorgeous.

Got an early start up Dog Mountain. Not too many hikers for a Sunday. Hiked the scenic trail up, Augspurger trail down. The Augsperger trail is very muddy from the top, down to the junction with the spur that goes to Augspurger mountain. Balsamroot is past its prime.

On Sunday, May 26, 2013, I was the first person to climb Mt. Washington. Let the historical magnitude of that sink in for a minute. Go ahead, I'll wait.
