April 12, 2013 Bosterson 5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Dry, then wind, then beer, then rain.

April 8 to April 9, 2013 RenegadePilgrim 16 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

I have been wanting to do this trail for a long time. My original hope was to do a thru-hike with car shuttle but I was only able to get one friend to go with me, so we picked the Jones Creek to Elk Creek section with the intention to do an in-n-out backpack, camping at the Elk Creek Campground for the night. We hit the trail around 9:30a and knocked out the...

April 7, 2013 Bosterson 11 miles 4,000 feet gained

Up Casey Creek, down Nick Eaton. Rain turned into little graupel snow up top, blowing sideways. Then the sun came out partway down. Then it was raining at the car. Springtime in Oregon.

The "other" Eagle Creek. This place is pretty cool—has an ONP kind of river walk vibe, but is far closer to home. (A high-wall canyon with tons of moss). Started around 2p and just had a few hours—I'd like to get farther next time, but started a bit back from the trailhead due to some iffy logging roads with mud that kept my little car from making it the who...

April 5 to April 6, 2013 Tommy B 1.5 miles 0 feet gained 1 night

One Night, camped at Windy Hill Campground, hiked 1.5 miles Saturday morning from campsite to boat ramp and back. Heard lots of coyotes howling overnight.

April 5, 2013 Jen 7 miles 1,750 feet gained

Brought some friends along to my favorite go-to rainy day hike.

April 3, 2013 Bosterson 12 miles 3,750 feet gained

Planning to go to Tanner Butte. Took the shortcut up the ridge west of the Tanner trail - pretty cool, kind of like Rudolph Spur. One shoe decided it needed to eviscerate my heel, so I was forced to take my knife and cut out part of the plastic heel cup, which only kind of helped. Hit snow around 3500 ft and put on snowshoes to avoid obnoxious sinkage. The t...

I had planned on hiking up Hardy Ridge, but shortly before reaching the Bridge of the Gods, I remembered that a Discovery Pass is now required. So I decided to turn around in Cascade Locks and hopped on 84 heading westbound. As I was driving past the Eagle Creek exit, it dawned on me... It's Monday, maybe the hordes of people were at work!?! I decided to tak...

Were lucky to get to Crescent Beach 10 minutes before fog covered everything. Before that hiked Cannon Beach to Chapman rocks in low tide - pretty cool (but would have to wade to get around rocks to Crescent Beach, and I couldn't promise we'd make it back until high tide, so we chose to get there on trail instead).

March 31, 2013 Bosterson 7 miles 5,250 feet gained

Started at midnight. Summit at 5:30am (after waiting for a cold hour at the Hogsback for the rest of my team to catch up). Sunrise. Back at the car at 9:45. Perfect conditions, no ice, not too crowded.

March 30, 2013 Ken 4 miles 1,500 feet gained

A short snowshoe on a beautiful sun-filled day. Headed up to the lake and a bit beyond just trekking through the trees. Some great views but camera malfunctioned:(

March 30, 2013 Stacey 13 miles 500 feet gained

So, we might be a little insane. Arrived at the TH shortly after 9am, to find we were the first to arrive for the morning. We quickly grabbed our running gear and went for an out and back run along the road to Jawbone Flats. (6 miles) After arriving back at the car, we changed into hiking gear grabbed our packs and the dog. Then we hiked the loop through Opa...

Didn't quite make it all the way up to the top due to super warm weather, a desire not to do 1 mi of side hilling where the regular road/trail is, and the cornices on the scramble route—went to the northern "peak" instead. Sustained 40mph winds around the top. Nice day!

March 30, 2013 Molly Higgins 5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Hiking Mt. Monadnock was a huge accomplishment for me. I had a knee injury in 2010 that took almost a year to fully recover. I spent a few months getting back in shape and started hiking again in 2012. I often hiked the smaller Monadnock's (Pack and North Pack), and I could always see Monadnock from the summits. I made it a goal to hike Monadnock, and I fina...

A group from PortlandHikers.org decided to have a "Big Dog Party" by doing two runs up Dog Mountain the other day. The weather was idyllic. We were the first to the trailhead, and of course the first to the summit. But the hordes were ascending as we were going down the first time. After a quick refueling break, we again went back up the "More Difficult" rou...

Beautiful weather, no work, an excellent day for Don an I to get some exercise and explore near by Catherine Creek area. We weren't alone in our reasoning, as exemplified by the huge amount of cars lined up along hwy 14. It is a beautiful area for sure, I see why it's popular. Interestingly and happily we encountered only a handful of people on the trails du...

I'll have the Table Mt. with a lil Aldrich Butte on the side. Started from Bonneville. Snow free 'cept for the last 200'. I'd call it 3200'+ Does this mean the Benson Plateau is open for Business? First 4000'+ for 2013.

March 29 to March 31, 2013 Allison 13.5 miles 2,000 feet gained 2 nights

A wonderful early (early) season backpack exploring game trails and the geology of the Deschutes River canyons.

March 29 to March 31, 2013 Jen 13.5 miles 2,000 feet gained 2 nights

Perfect weather for a canyon backpack. We got in there the back way before the Alder Springs TH opened for the season. Followed deer trails and marveled in the geology and magnificent desert scenery. Did not see another human.

March 25, 2013 JM 2.5 miles 750 feet gained

Trip up Scarborough Hill at Fort Columbia. Easy hike uphill through massive old growth trees with occasional views out over the miles wide Columbia River. Viewless summit, main trail down closed, took the Military Road Trail down to the fort. Scrambled around the ruins of the fort, giant gun turret foundations.

March 25, 2013 Nat Turner 8.7 miles 1,500 feet gained

Trail of ten falls. Cool. Crowded on the way back. Hit this one early mid week. Even then it feels like Multnomah. Perfect for out-of-towners who would die if asked to go up Larch or Table. Lots of Eye candy. NO DOGS. (stupid, but the law)

March 25 to March 26, 2013 Chris 22 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

I have the whole week off (sort of), so I thought I'd spend a few days hiking and fishing. The Metolius River was recommended as a great place to fly fish and hike in the winter, so I thought I'd give it a shot. This trail is a mix of complete solitude and crowded trails. There are stretches where I would see no one for miles and then I would see a bundle of...

March 24 to March 25, 2013 RenegadePilgrim 17 miles 2,500 feet gained 1 night

This was an insane two days of snowshoeing around Trillium Lake and an attempt to get to Veda Lake. We snowshoed from the sno-park at Govy to Trillium Lake, then snowshoed around the lake. The next day, we attempted to get to Veda Lake, but were unsuccessful in following the trail. The skies were blue and the free of clouds. We couldn't have asked for better...

March 24, 2013 Roman 4.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

The flowers are going good up there, it finally looks like spring. Tick count is 1 between two of us (very low is you know that area). Got to watch Gorge Bison on the way back.

March 24, 2013 Bosterson 14.5 miles 4,000 feet gained

Alpine start at noon. Up in 3 hrs and back by 6pm despite spending the better part of an hour up top. Brought snowshoes but didn't need them due to a well beaten track! Spikes were helpful to keep from slipping on the compacted snow.

March 23 to March 24, 2013 Allison 8 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

Overnight snow camp on the pumice plains above Butte Dome Camp. Full trip report on the blog.

March 23, 2013 Chris 9 miles 1,000 feet gained

A mid-day jaunt around the Molalla River trail system. It's eerie how strikingly similar this area is to Forest Park. (Plus ants; thousands and thousands of ants).
