May 31 to June 4, 2014 Allison Preacher Meadow 35 miles 11,000 feet gained 4 nights

A glorious 5-day trip through the high alpine areas of the Red Trinities. It's been a very low snow year, so all of the high country is accessible. We went in via Swift Creek, spending nights at Granite Lake (buggy), Summit Lake (x2), and along Swift Creek. Highlights included nice flowers, two bears at Diamond Lake (mom and cub), great weather, solitude, ex...

May 31, 2014 acorn woodpecker Nesmith Point 8 miles 4,000 feet gained

A "direct"(i.e. dumb way) to Nesmith Point. For adventurous buffoons with climbing skills only!

May 31, 2014 The Angry Hiker Granite Mountain 4 miles 3,750 feet gained

The weather was perfect. The snow was perfect. Even my digestive system was perfect. It's hard to ask for a better day than this one.

May 31, 2014 JM Big Huckleberry Mountain 12 miles 3,000 feet gained

Beautiful Saturday for a trip to the Grassy Knoll LO and the Big Huckleberry Mtn LO. First time there, great views and flowers, pretty nice trail.

May 31, 2014 Team Reynolds Hamilton Island 3.5 miles 250 feet gained

Needed another hike to go with our Wind Mtn day so we decided to go back and loop this one. AMAZING views of Munra, Wauneke, Wauna, Nesmith, Table, Hamilton, Aldrich, Greenleaf, Sacagawea, Cedar, etc... Very photogenic hilltop meadow location full of pretty flowers. Once again, a very nice place to explore on a nice day.

May 31, 2014 Team Reynolds Wind Mountain 2.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Great little hike with a buster of a climb, but not boring at all.. 18 logs to go under/over and the ability to stand on the very tip-top of a mountain. Really cool Native American history in the area as well. Standing on the top all by ourselves with beautiful views all around, looking over at Dog Mtn with my binoculars at the CROWD standing on top. Good hi...

May 31, 2014 Karl Sister Rocks 12 miles 3,500 feet gained

Third try's the charm! Finally made it up to Observation Peak, after being rejected twice already this Spring. This time we started at the Big Hollow trailhead, which offered a bit of variety from past failed attempts, and a bit shorter (if no less steep) climb. It was a gorgeous day, so we lunched on OP, then meandered over to Sister Rocks for even more vie...

May 31, 2014 Chris Black Marble Mountain 15.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

A group trip with shuttle. It appears the Box Camp trail has had some recent rehab, and may be newer. Great views from that trail, and the road isn't as bad as the ranger suggested. We made a quick trip up Marble Gap as well—a worthwhile side trip.

May 30, 2014 Karl Burnt Lake 17 miles 4,500 feet gained

Dear trail friends warned me, "Boriest. Trail. Ever." Well, I'm not entirely sure about that, but you do walk uphill for 5 miles before catching a view. Once up top, though, wow! I just love wandering around on Zigzag Mountain. Took the Cast Creek Trail up from Riley Horsecamp, to the junction with Zigzag Mtn Trail, where I veered east to go have lunch on to...

May 30, 2014 Team Reynolds Niagra Falls 2.5 miles 500 feet gained

Excellent hike with the family. I seem to be driving a lot of gravel lately, this is only 5 miles of it and no pot holes hardly at all, even did it in the Prius. Well worth the 17 mile drive inland from Beaver to see Pheasant and Niagara falls.

May 30, 2014 Team Reynolds Cape Meares Lake 2 miles 0 feet gained

Family hike day! Too late to do the whole loop but had a blast with the family and dogs all the same, nice beach and lots of treasures to look at. Dinner at the new Pelican Tap room in Tillamook.

May 30, 2014 Jen Shellrock Mountain 5 miles 1,000 feet gained

I came back to bike more of the Surveyor's Ridge Trail. I'm going to try to do more hike/bike combos this year. Helps cover some ground quickly, and is kinder to my aging hip joint. This was hard work today, 18 miles total, 13 on two wheels. Took a side trip up Shellrock Mtn. Finished early and drove over towards the Flag Point Lookout for a short hike. Some...

May 30, 2014 Woodswalker Robins Island 2 miles 250 feet gained

Just a quick trip out on a busy work day to have lunch at the falls. Relatively quiet. Beautiful sunny day, Rosy plectritis full on right now.

May 28, 2014 Team Reynolds Rock Creek Lake 9 miles 2,000 feet gained

After a few Mountain Bike trips it was back to hiking the trail today. Complete solitude and awesome views were the story of the day along with the gentle graded climb. We went south on the PCT about 3.5 miles then looped back up to 3CR on the logging roads (with one small bushwhack due to a missed cutoff) which offered MUCH better views than the forested tr...

May 28, 2014 Jen Super Duper Connector 3 miles 750 feet gained

Most of my 11 miles distance was on a mountain bike, but I also spent 3 hours slowly wandering an unnamed knob in the woods looking for morels. Only found a few, but it was sure pleasant to be out there alone on a lovely day. Not a human in sight. Tons of bear poo, but I didnt meet the maker.

May 26, 2014 Karl Big Huckleberry Mountain 12 miles 3,000 feet gained

Woke up to mostly clear skies, but that all changed by the time we hit the Grassy Knoll trailhead. It was a misty start, but developed into a full-on gale by the time we hit the knoll. Sort of bypassed that, hoping it'd be better on the way back, and continued on northward. The conditions gradually improved, and became downright pleasant after a while. The w...

May 25 to May 26, 2014 Kyle Meyer Middle Rock Lake 10 miles 0 feet gained 1 night

Easy backpack into the Rock Lakes. We initially tried going up to the Frazier Turnaround but got, ahem, **turned around** by snow drifts. Without much day left and a three legged dog in tow starting from the Shellrock Lake trailhead, we decided to stop at the Rock Lakes instead of our initial destination of Serene.

May 24 to May 26, 2014 Stacey Vermillion Campground 20 miles 4,000 feet gained 2 nights

Decided to take advantage of the long weekend to head south to backpack in the central Sierras with a friend from back in my Fresno days. We left Fresno at about 9am for the long drive to the TH at Edison Lake. It's not that far in terms of mileage (about 90 miles), but the last 30 miles are over a single lane road with lots of steep drop offs, blind curves ...

May 24, 2014 acorn woodpecker Skamania Island 6 miles 1,750 feet gained

The family and I went into the Gorge on the Washington side Saturday and went somewhere to avoid the crowds. Great hanging meadows, flowers, forested summits, and grand ridgeline viewpoints. Saw a record one car at the trailhead.

May 24 to May 26, 2014 Chris Ediza Lake 34.5 miles 5,750 feet gained 2 nights

A great holiday weekend trip. I made the 7.5 hour drive down from Grants Pass Friday night and got in to the Mammoth campground around 1am. Day 1: 10 miles, 2750’ Saturday morning I learned that the Reds Meadow shuttle just started that weekend, so I parked at Mammoth Mountain and took the required shuttle down to Agnew Meadows. I had a permit for the high t...

May 24, 2014 B-Dog Denny Mountain 1 miles 1,250 feet gained

After dealing with a leaky water heater and a repair man having to come out on Saturday..... My holiday plans for the weekend were shot. I decided to do some yard work for a few hours and then realized that the clouds were actually clearing and there might be a chance to chase down some sunshine after all. Since I already had my ski gear packed from a couple...

May 24, 2014 Pablo Shellrock Mountain 9 miles 4,000 feet gained

Off-trail hike up Shellrock Mtn, then the ridge south to the meadow on top - returned on Wyeth Trail.

May 24, 2014 Father Guido Sarducci Mount Townsend 8 miles 3,000 feet gained

Was hoping to climb out of the mist & fog but it was not to be today. No views due to the weather conditions which was a bit of a bummer.Trail in good shape though w/ only spotty snow.

May 22, 2014 Pablo Council Crest 4 miles 1,000 feet gained

Exerciser from the work place -> down Conner Trail to Marquam Shelter then up to Council Crest and back.

May 21, 2014 Woodswalker Lindsey Pond 7 miles 2,750 feet gained

Balsam root still going strong with fields of yellow. A few places where the larkspur, phlox etc made an amazing rainbow mix. Lupine and paintbrush still not quite open most places.

May 19, 2014 Team Reynolds Grassy Knoll 6 miles 1,750 feet gained

The Hike: Not a soul in the whole area and 72 degrees with maybe 8mph wind on top of the knoll. The beginning climb is steep in places but never too steep and the views starting from the first rock outcropping at about 3/4 mile are spectacular. Hood River and HR Mtn, Adams, Hood, the Gorge, Dog and Aug, it was just fabulous. Found 1 3ft patch of snow at 3800...

May 18, 2014 Chris Clover Creek 5 miles 1,000 feet gained

More snow! Even with two weeks of hot days, this area still hasn't melted nearly as far as I thought it would be—I predicted wrong. Oh well—a nice hike anyway.

May 18, 2014 Father Guido Sarducci George Lake 10 miles 2,500 feet gained

Hiked as far as the Boy Scout Shelter which is @ approx. 5000'. A bit of spotty snow as you approach the shelter but overall trail in good shape.

May 17, 2014 Mileage Mike Cattail Lake 11.9 miles 3,000 feet gained

I tweaked my sciatic nerve and SI joint very badly while on Table Mt. This was the beginning of a very long PT and a couple of Dr.'s, which didn't seem to be working, but the issue just went away after about 4 months. I'm very thankful this went away as it was very painful!!! For whatever reason, it seemed to work out during a hike, but came back with a veng...
