June 15, 2014 JM Devils Kitchen 4.2 miles 250 feet gained

Wow! Another fascinating hike in this surprisingly active area. From the same PCT trailhead as Boiling Springs Lake, you can take the fork to aptly named Devil's Kitchen. We had barely started, then as we crossed a large meadow, we stopped in our tracks as we saw a large shape in the grass about 100 yards away. A cinnamon-colored black bear! It ambled slowly...

June 15, 2014 Chris Upper Albert Lake 11 miles 3,250 feet gained

A loop from Taylor Lake. Seven lakes, if you include little Neil Lake (but really a pond). This is best done counter-clockwise due to the scrambling above Big Blue lake being a bit treacherous if you were to come down it. Moderate scrambling and minor route-finding required, but great views from just below Neil Lake and the col above Big Blue. The area is re...

June 14 to June 16, 2014 Eva Rees Buck Point 20 miles 4,250 feet gained 2 nights

Arrived at the Gorge later in the day, and car camped at Beacon Rock. Took off on this hike the next morning. Lots of cars at the trailhead, got the last spot before cars had to go to overflow. The trailhead isn't the clearest to find, but we asked some folks heading the same direction. Not a lot of people on the trail itself. Passed a group of 3 on the way ...

June 14, 2014 Roman Green Canyon Way 4.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Green Canyon trail with a little OT near viewpoint. Didn't spend much time at viewpoint because it was COLD, probably in the upper 30's. Nice rhodies. Decided to come back a week later for a more extended trip. The rain started the moment I got into the car.

June 14, 2014 JM Boiling Springs Lake 1.8 miles 250 feet gained

After setting up camp @ Warner Valley Campground, we decided to do a quick evening hike before sundown. This short and stunning hike fit the bill perfectly. After we set out from the junction w/ the PCT nearby, we passed the Drakesbad Lodge and hotsprings where a buck and a doe munched on grass in the lovely meadow. There were sequoia trees along the trail (...

June 14 to June 15, 2014 JM Kings Creek Falls 6 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

The first hike on our California trip last week for our birthdays. We decided to break up the drive to Yosemite by stopping off for a detour to Lassen Volcanic National Park. After a stop @ Manzanita Lake near the entrance and a quick peruse of the information boards and visitors center, we settled on a relatively easy Kings Creek falls hike. Lassen has few ...

June 14, 2014 Karl Tomlike Mountain 18 miles 4,000 feet gained

Did a slight modification of the linked hike suggestion, hitting peaks rather than all the lakes. Started at Rainy Lake, and just looped up directly to Green Point Mountain. Which was in the clouds. We hoped to return past here on the way back, with an improving forecast promising better views. But having our heads in the cloud turned out to be the theme of ...

June 14, 2014 Woodswalker Multnomah Falls 8 miles 1,750 feet gained

Went up with the Trail Club meetup to see the open house at Nesika. Very wonderful trip and an impressive legacy of lodge tending.

June 11, 2014 Jen Alta Vista 3 miles 500 feet gained

Little morning jaunt to get closer to the mountain.

June 10, 2014 Team Reynolds The Island 5 miles 750 feet gained

Stayed in the State Park deluxe cabins and hiked this beautiful trail out to "The Island" overlook. It was a little on the hot side but it was amazing. From the top you can see every peak from Bachelor to Hood...

June 9, 2014 Jen Jug Lake 7 miles 1,750 feet gained

With an 11 am start, my plans ended up a bit overambitious. My intention was to summit Fryingpan Mountain via the Cowlitz Trail from the west. I imagined wandering through flower dotted meadows with lakes in this area of the William O Douglas Wilderness that is well known by equestrians. Hit persistent snow at 4400 feet and it felt a bit like the Benson Plat...

June 9, 2014 Team Reynolds Painted Hills 3 miles 500 feet gained

Finally had to leave our little cabin in the woods and head for civilization, but a stop at Painted Hills was our treat for the day. We did all the trails and the Rim Trail is the BEST climbing up and above everything with a view to every section of the park. More amazing geology and history, and another Natl Park in our book. If you collect Natl Park cancel...

June 9, 2014 Allison Pyramid Rock 8.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Late start at Grouse Vista, up to Silver Star summit, then Star 2, then down the north jeep road to make an Ed's mini loop to see the arch and scramble up the rocks, cut over to the Indian Pits via Sturgeon Rock / campsite trail, bushwhacked down the Indian Pits ridge to connect to the lower jeep track, which we followed back up to the Grouse Vista ridgeline...

June 8 to June 9, 2014 Eva Rees Esmeralda Peaks 6 miles 2,250 feet gained 1 night

Short day hike, with a good vertical gain challenge. Hiked with a big group, including two dogs. Lots and lots of snow on the trail in June. Finding the trail was basically impossible, and the area is too heavily trod to follow tracks. Basically you can see the pass and you aim for it as best you can. I'm sure we made it much harder for ourselves by not doin...

June 8, 2014 Team Reynolds Strawberry Campground 6.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Stayed at the US Forest Service Deer Creek Guard Station, very cool and utterly solitary place to stay, local forest service could learn from Malheur's fantastic road maintenance and signage (maybe they are better funded). WOW!! What an amazing scenic hike. Pictures just will not do it justice, the lake is just the start and the Falls were pounding from all ...

June 8, 2014 Roman Indian Heaven Lakes 7.41 miles 2,250 feet gained

Forgot my camera, but luckily didn't forget the GPS (the track @ the link). Indian Heaven is still covered in snow, but the melt seems a bit early this year with most of S side and some of W side ridges of Bird Mt. already melted out. 5-7 feet drifts on the east slope, was fun with the crampons. The lakes just start to thaw. Mosquitoes are bad for the first ...

June 8 to June 9, 2014 JM Bonney Crossing Campground 14.5 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

Hiked up to the Badger Creek Cut-off Trail 477. Many fine creek-side camps, but all in view of the trail. Trail itself is not very interesting for the distance I hiked, though there are some interesting rock features above the trail a few miles in. We camped near mile 7. Spotted large waterfall just before Tolo Creek. Saw one group on Saturday night camped @...

June 7 to June 8, 2014 Eva Rees Yellow Hill 11 miles 2,750 feet gained 1 night

Good day hike! Not terribly long, but a good workout. Early in the season there was still quite a bit of snow above Yellow Hill. We also encountered some dirt motobikers lower on the trail. The trail is rough, and steep. Took us longer to get to Yellow Hill than expected. Yellow Hill isn't all that spectacular, we actually didn't even realize we were there u...

June 7, 2014 Team Reynolds Turtle Cove 4 miles 1,000 feet gained

Hit the Overlook and the Island In Time trails, both amazing for different reasons. Overlook trail, which climbs around and up over the basin, is MUCH less crowded and has fantastic views of the surrounding valley. Also swung over to the Cant Ranch and the Paleontology Center where we met a gopher snake friend in the parking lot. Then it was off to our weeke...

June 7, 2014 Allison Silver Star Mountain 7.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

Early flower show is looking really nice on Silver Star. Lots of paintbrush, wood violet, avalanche lily, bistort, spirea, etc. The peak will be in two weeks or so. The beargrass is almost non-existent.

June 7 to June 8, 2014 B-Dog Silver Star Mountain 8 miles 5,500 feet gained 1 night

New WA 100 Summit - 1 of 10 for 2014 Hooked up with my buddy Jason for a nice overnighter. Made the mistake of hauling my ski's up with me. Turns out we were a few weeks late. I had read a report from May 18th and it looked like you would be able to skin most of the way after the first mile or so. At the trailhead I went back and forth on whether or not I sh...

June 7, 2014 Karl Bell Creek 17 miles 4,000 feet gained

After all the trailwork done by mcds up on Bell Creek, we just had to go take a look for ourselves. What an amazing transformation this trail has undergone! It's so walkable now, as to not even seen at all to be the same one I hiked just a couple months ago. Not only were there very few trees to clamber over, under or around, but even the normal creekbed tha...

June 7, 2014 Stacey Cattail Lake 20.5 miles 7,500 feet gained

Aldrich Butte + Augsperger Mountain + Angels Rest

June 7, 2014 Pablo Nesmith Point 12.5 miles 4,250 feet gained

Did some maintenance on Horsetail Creek trail from the trailhead on Yeon Mtn Rd to the intersection with ROA. Sawed 12-15, tossed another 12-15 - lots of smaller blowdown left to clear. Will take a couple more trips.

June 6, 2014 The Angry Hiker Mount Teneriffe 6.5 miles 3,750 feet gained

I forgot how much of a slog this. Straight up with no switchbacks, and zero views until you get to the top. It's pretty strenuous, and I almost wished I had some skis to make the hike easier. But then it wouldn't really be a hike, would it?

June 6, 2014 Jen Belknap Crater 8.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

We biked up McKenzie Pass from the east gate, then ditched our bikes and headed north on the PCT through the lava lands. Volcanoes in every direction. Little Belknap has some cool caves. Belknap had a big well formed crater, plus two more little ones. Fun glissade down.

June 5 to June 7, 2014 Kyle Meyer Serene Lake 10 miles 0 feet gained 2 nights

Swimming trip out to Serene Lake. The rock on the SE side of the lake is spectacular for sun bathing, fishing, and swimming. Highly recommended.

June 4, 2014 JM Gorge 7 miles 2,000 feet gained

Steep weeknight scramble up to great views of the Gorge. Spotted a dead baby bunny. Johnny & Matt McK accompanied me. Multnomah falls at night was really awesome. Looking up, it was pouring out of the Big Dipper. Amazing.

June 2, 2014 Woodswalker Eagle Creek Trail 12 miles 1,250 feet gained

Great day! Perfect weather! The little seasonal waterfalls are mostly wet rock but the big ones like Tunnel Falls are still going strong of course.

June 1, 2014 B-Dog Silver Peak 2 miles 1,750 feet gained

So I finally got around to checking out what all the hoopla was up on Silver Peak.... and it didn't disappoint. I was able skin up from where I parked and enjoyed nice turns all the way down. There were only a few sections towards the bottom where I had to carry my ski's for a few hundred feet. It is melting fast and I am glad that I was able to squeeze this...

June 1, 2014 Roman Eruption 10 miles 2,250 feet gained

Hiked with my dad from the Hummocks to Johnston Ridge Observatory. Everything is so green right now, lots of flowers and ripe strawberries (& much more to come). Aside from JRO and another roadside viewpoint, saw only once couple on the trail, being parallel to the road it gets completely overlooked. We got our wrist bands (required there) at Coldwater Ridge...
