June 29, 2014 Roman Sturgeon Rock 6.34 miles 1,750 feet gained

Silver Star north trailhead always poses a dilemma, either: a) this hike makes the drive almost worth it; or b) this hike is so good I am willing to sacrifice my car for it. But today's hike was exceptional. First, found a shortcut trail for the summit. From the trail that goes east to Baldy Mtn., unsigned trail juts off uphill where main trail stops climbin...

June 28 to June 30, 2014 Eva Rees Oneonta Gorge 1 miles 0 feet gained 2 nights

Total touristy car-camping weekend. We stayed at Beacon Rock. Visited a bunch of places around Hood River, like the breweries, Bonneville Dam (from both WA and OR sides) and Vista House. While we were there we couldn't pass up the opportunity to explore Oneonta Gorge. Water was higher this time than shortly earlier in the season. Not too cold, and we were sa...

June 28, 2014 Team Reynolds Stackpole Harbor 4.5 miles 0 feet gained

OMG mosquitoes!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise very muddy and not so interesting... but, we found a young sea otter sleeping on the beach. VERY cute and something I never thought we'd see. Good thing there was nobody there to bother it.

June 27, 2014 Jen Paradise Hills 6 miles 1,500 feet gained

Loving the bike shuttle these days. Hike up trail, ride down old logging road. Lets me get out there, but diminishes the hip damage. Love the forest in the rain. Got to ride an overgrown road bed, blindly bombing down a gauntlet of salmonberry bushes. Took a header, didn't care, bloody but victorious!

June 27, 2014 Team Reynolds 1000 Acres Road 3.5 miles 0 feet gained

Climbed up to Hamilton Saddle the other day on the mountain bikes (which was epic) and was scheduled to do Barlow Pass today but the forecast was so bad we bagged it... with the unexpected hole in the rain we had to go somewhere so we did out of the blue. Pretty area, great for dogs, bit boring of a hike.. the clouds were the star of the show today. At least...

June 26, 2014 Karl Silver Star Mountain 5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Just a quick, after-work run up the main jeep trail on the north ridge, then back down Ed's Trail. Saw the sun for nearly 10 seconds while at the summit, but otherwise visibility was limited to 100' or so most of the way. The wildflowers are exploding out there right now! Wow...

June 26, 2014 Team Reynolds Steigerwald Lake 3 miles 0 feet gained

Found a hole in the weather and went to see the local wildlife with our daughter and her friend. Saw deer, red tail hawks, harrier hawk, many bittren, red headed wood-pecker, bunny, bullfrog and maybe even a golden eagle. The girls enjoyed it and it was nice getting out of the house.

June 25 to June 26, 2014 Kyle Meyer Scotts Bluff 8 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

This was the start of my wife Christy and I's roadtrip into Canada. With most of the high country in ONP still covered in snow, we chose to head out to the beach. The second overland crossing was intense—ropes, ladders, and lots of mud. The beach at Scott Creek is amazing though. It even comes complete with a perfect bouldering rock.

June 23, 2014 Nat Turner Vista Point 4.9 miles 1,500 feet gained

Alone. I Fell. Trail fell out from under me as I stepped aside to let a dude pass by uphill. Right near where the nasty icy slide/washout was this winter, above Weisendanger and Ecloa falls, but before the Larch junction. An over-hanging mud cornice of a trail released without warning, and I fell into the thorny bramble 40ft above Multnomah Creek. Nothing bu...

June 23, 2014 Elsie Perry Lake 5 miles 500 feet gained

First hike in two months due to a busted knee - it did okay on this lovely and gradually graded trail to Owl Point. Awesome views of Helen's, Adams, and Rainier from Alki Pt, and stellar view of Hood from Owl Pt. Bluebird day and hit just a few remaining patches of snow halfway in - will be gone in days, surely. The long drive is also lovely, despite spendin...

June 22, 2014 Stacey Rainy Lake Campground 18.5 miles 3,750 feet gained

Longer hike for summer solstice. Stops at Rainy Lake, North Lake, Green Point Mountain, Mud Lake, and Wahtum Lake. Garmin track is the referenced in URL.

June 22, 2014 Karl Wildcat Mountain 10.5 miles 2,250 feet gained

In the end, I guess my takeaway was, "okay, checked that one off!" I know a lot of folks really like this hike, and there are some compelling reasons to do so. But man, there are also a number of reasons it won't be on the "once a year rotation" schedule, too! For a place that's within walking distance (really!) of US-26, it takes forever to get to the trail...

June 22, 2014 Woodswalker Ed'S Trail 5.6 miles 1,250 feet gained

Hazy, but the views were still fantastic. Helens, Adams, Rainer, Hood, Jefferson, and Mt Washington. The bloom is full on right now for everything except bear grass. A bit slower above where Ed's trail and Sturgeon trail join up just below the summit.

June 21 to June 22, 2014 acorn woodpecker Minnie Peak 13 miles 3,750 feet gained 1 night

Spent the night near the trailhead the night before to get an early start and enjoy the shortest night of the year in honor of St. Solstice. Beautiful hike/bushwack/scramble/climb. Plenty of flowers, granite, and views. Weather was perfect for early season and no bugs. Mt. Minnie was a real adventure and feels good to have made it to the top as there is no e...

June 21 to June 22, 2014 Chris Little Bear Lake 13 miles 4,500 feet gained 1 night

Overnight to Bear Lakes. There is a well marked off trail route to Little Bear from the granite waterfall area about 1/4 mile from Big Bear. Wee Bear Lake had super fishing—lots of brookies. While the saddle looking down towards Big Bear had very nice camping sites, the tarns that usually hold water during wetter years held only dead bug water. Little Bear h...

June 21, 2014 Jen Humbug Flats 9 miles 1,750 feet gained

Went on three different hikes while staying at Breitenbush for the Solstice celebration: Triangulation Peak and Boca Cave, Fire Camp Lakes Basin and the S Breitenbush Gorge Trail.

June 21, 2014 Team Reynolds Elowah Falls 4 miles 750 feet gained

A nice family hike with all of the girls. McCord was nice and the trail was interesting but Elowah was really the star of the day. We also took them out to see Mosier Falls before dinner at Full Sail and a walk along the sand bar in Hood River. Next time we are going to use this trailhead to go out to Wahclella.

June 20 to June 22, 2014 Roman Devils Peak 16 miles 4,500 feet gained 2 nights

Spent first night camping on a cliff top overlooking Salmon River Canyon, then solstice night at the lookout tower. Awesome trip, a bit more elevation gain I am comfortable with but great training. My dog Pepper is back on the trails!

June 20 to June 21, 2014 JM Puppy Dome 14 miles 250 feet gained 1 night

This hike almost didn't happen, but we had a great week in the woods and had another day to explore. We went to the permit office and they had some available (not a given), so we went for it. The hike is unlike many Yosemite hikes in that it's relatively flat. It coasts across a few creeks and large meadows, the Lyell fork coasting by happily. You need to be...

June 20, 2014 B-Dog Mount Si 8 miles 3,500 feet gained

Quick hike after work on Friday with Da Boyz. First time going up the old trail and it was rather peaceful. We were able to watch the sunset on the last day of spring. Time to Bring on SUMMER !!!! Happy Summer Solstice.

June 19, 2014 Karl Glisan Glacier 9.5 miles 3,500 feet gained

Took advantage of the bluebird forecast for a quick run up McNeil Point. Absolutely glorious! Snow started around 5200', just below the cutoff for the (so-called) "climber's scramble" route. We followed some boot prints for awhile, before realizing the "trail" was a 100' or so to our right. After that correction, the rest of the way up to the shelter was rel...

June 19, 2014 Pablo Smith Rock 4.6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Visited Smith Rock for the first time, lots of people. Great views - took many photos.

June 18 to June 19, 2014 JM May Lake 12 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

It was hard to leave our great camp, but we wanted to see more places in this amazing area. The hike from Glen Aulin to May Lake was 5 miles of boring forest, then you start to get above the trees and you get some good views of the Cathedral Range. I scrambled up a nearby dome to see some more peaks, Tenaya Lake, and nearby Raisin Lake. As we climbed, 10,300...

June 18, 2014 Team Reynolds Sherrard Point 12.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

Parked at the start of the Oneonta Trail and headed down to Franklin Ridge trail, down Franklin through some spectacularly overgrown trail segments to the spur that goes to the super semi-secret awesome overlook ;), then across to Larch Mtn Trail and back up to Sherrard (on a clear sunny afternoon finally), and the 1/4 mile road trek down to the car. What is...

June 17 to June 18, 2014 JM Waterwheel Falls 8.5 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

In the morning, we decided to hike to the famous Waterwheel Falls. After starting down the trail past Glen Aulin, the trail became more and more spectacular as we passed many large and unusual waterfalls and vistas. We decided to camp away from the busy backpackers camp, so we went back after a 1/2 mile of scouting for camps and packed up our stuff and moved...

June 16 to June 17, 2014 JM White Cascade 7 miles 0 feet gained 1 night

We set out to hike the entire length of the Tuolomne River canyon (33 miles), but after blisters became an issue for my wife, we decided to do a shorter version and hit the highlights. Our hike originated at the Glen Aulin trailhead in Tuolomne Meadows. Glen Aulin is a High Sierra Camp run by concessionaire that has tent cabins and meals all prepared for you...
