August 13, 2014 acorn woodpecker 5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Was able to walk/jog from my mother's house to this ridge a couple miles away. Ascended through scrubby sagebrush, lodgpole pine, and cactus to the hogback ridge, which is the first uplift of the Rocky Mountains. Great views of the Front Range and the city of Denver. Had a thunderstorm open on me while I scrambled along the cliffs and rocks. Followed rough a...

August 12, 2014 acorn woodpecker 3 miles 1,000 feet gained

Went on a family trip to Denver. Had a brief window in the morning to do a hike with my dad. We went to one of his favorite short hikes in the area. Rather than take the trail we followed the west ridge from the road on up to summit of Chief Mt. Better views, more varied terrain, melts out earlier, and no people on an otherwise justifiably popular hike! Ther...

August 12, 2014 Jen 3.5 miles 250 feet gained

Very cool phenomenon. Slatey creekbed with lovely little cascades everywhere. Natural gas leak in a cove behind the falls, lit up to provide an eternal flame! Super fun scrambles with my son. Will upload pictures soon, but check out the link above for this nifty place.

August 11 to August 13, 2014 Roman Pinnacle Glacier 24.6 miles 5,000 feet gained 2 nights

Camped first night on Friday at Horseshoe Meadows (the flowers are great right now), planned to hike offtrail to Crystal Lake for the second night via The Bumper - the hill/rock roughly 100 feet high with the first row view of the mountain. From The Bumper though, the terrain looked pretty easy and I thought I had still a lot of time, why not check the two m...

August 9, 2014 Stacey City of Portland Reservoir Number 4 4 miles 500 feet gained

I took eight of my high school robotics students for a team building day on the 4T trail, starting at the Oregon Zoo. We hiked to Council Crest Park, where the kids worked together to complete a scavenger hunt. Then we sat on the lawn to eat lunch before continuing down the Marquam Trail to OSHU, the tram, and then the trolley. We made an ice cream stop near...

August 9, 2014 Karl High Camp 13 miles 3,000 feet gained

Did something really different this day. Joined up with a group hike sponsored by the [Friends of Mount Adams](http://mtadamsfriends.org/), led by a well-known local historian who'd spent a lifetime crawling all over this mountain. The bugs were simply horrendous! But the scenery and good company made up for that, and more. We started at Divide Camp trailhea...

August 9, 2014 acorn woodpecker Rooster Rock 3 miles 1,250 feet gained

After blueberry picking outside of Molalla and hanging along the Molalla River, the woodpecker family ventured to Table Rock Wilderness for a quick hike. There was no one else at Rooster Rock TH and no one on the trail. The forest was pleasant and the air mild. The views were good albeit hazy in the Willamette Valley. Loved the solitude.

August 9, 2014 Team Reynolds Sahale Falls 11 miles 2,250 feet gained

After a few Mtn Bike adventures it was time to get a big hike in again and WOW what a beautiful hike! No pictures or description we have read does it justice, our favorite hike this year.

August 8 to August 9, 2014 Karl Gotchen Glacier 15.5 miles 3,250 feet gained 1 night

Solo ramble starting at the South Climb trailhead on Mount Adams, then winding east along Round The Mountain ("not really") trail over to Bird Creek Meadows. This early stretch was through burns for a couple miles, and then into the most glorious alpine meadows for the next few. Particularly once on the Yakima reservation. The trail of flowers didn't seem qu...

August 4, 2014 Woodswalker McNeil Point 10 miles 2,250 feet gained

Very hazy but a perfect day. Some snow still, flowers really going for it starting at the switchbacks. Some of the heather is done some is at peak, some still budding. False hellebore just starting. The black flies were biting though even when I was moving between the upper viewpoint and the tarns. Still around everywhere else but fine if you are moving. I a...

August 3, 2014 Stacey Stratigraphy 3.5 miles 750 feet gained

This is a hike I've been wanting to do for awhile. The description of a trail with a suspension bridge, ladders, and stairs matched with fantastic scenery sounded a bit like a playground. However, I couldn't justify a 2 hour drive for a 2 hour hike. Thus the plan to hike this and then hike Ape Canyon. We were the first car in the parking lot at 9am. Back to ...

August 3, 2014 Pablo Devils Peak 7.6 miles 3,000 feet gained

First time on Cool Creek Trail - will revisit as a bike 'n hike loop with other trails on Hunchback Mtn. Nice trail and does not mess around with long switchbacks. Good water about halfway up. Buffoons I passed at the junction with the short trail to the peak had left hot coals in a fire ring next to the lookout. I used what water I had to extinguish and dum...

August 3, 2014 Elsie Henline Falls 2 miles 250 feet gained

Side trip to Henline Falls and the old mining cave and foundations. Pretty neat.

August 3, 2014 Elsie Three Pools 6.5 miles 750 feet gained

Seems a shame to spend lovely summer days on a low-elevation, treeful and mountainless trail....but still nursing the bum knee, so flat hikes it is. All I can say is that I found my new go-to swimming hole spot - swimming pool after swimming pool in crystal waters on a hot sunday...and NO ONE ELSE OUT THERE! Score.

August 2, 2014 B-Dog Guye Peak 3.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Took some rookies up this fun little class 3 / 4 rock scramble on the South Rib of Guye Peak. We had a blast... this is such a great little scramble with little to no approach and it is close to home. We all worked in the morning and spent the afternoon under the sun !!!

August 2 to August 3, 2014 Roman Blue Lake Ridge 17.5 miles 4,000 feet gained 1 night

Nice area, although the bugs were pretty bad (didn't go down to the lake for this reason). All of the trails there are open to motor cycles & some for ATV's, but most of my hike was on Sunday and it's been perfectly quiet... When I go there again, will camp on the east side of Bishop Ridge (it's gorgeous!) & do whatever number of scrambles I'll have time for...

August 2 to August 3, 2014 JoshMahar Mount Pleasant 10 miles 1,250 feet gained 1 night

Stunning Views of Mount Rainier. Wildflowers galore.

August 1 to August 3, 2014 Bosterson Traverse Lake 37 miles 10,000 feet gained 2 nights

3 day loop described in Lorain's 100 Classic Hikes in Oregon. Started at Boulder Park TH and went up the Main Eagle Creek trail through Eagle Meadow and up to Eagle Lake, then up to Cached Lake for the night. Ascended Needle Point (9018 ft) in the morning, then continued over the pass, down 2000 ft to Trail Creek, then back up 2200 ft to Wonker Pass. Switchb...

August 1, 2014 acorn woodpecker Council Crest 5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Took my son in his new pack and traveled to Council Crest after meeting Mrs. Woodpecker for lunch at work downtown. Took the Conor Trail to Gibbs St. and caught the Marquam Hill Road trail, switchbacked down, and eventually connected with the Council Crest trail. Sonny loved the pack and the hike and was fawned over by people on the summit! So nice that this...

July 31 to August 1, 2014 Kyle Meyer Blue Lake 10 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

Met my dad at an offtrail lake in Indian Heaven. Great swimming, full of fish, and tried to refurb a campsite that hadn't been used in easily 20 years.

July 31 to August 1, 2014 Jack 2.5 miles 750 feet gained 1 night

I came in from the east side, Kyle from Thomas lake trail head on the west for a one nighter at our private well stocked lake. Requires a mile or two of off trail navigation but well worth the effort. We set to work making improvements to the only site on the lake. Looking forward to our next adventure. Weather was perfect as was the company.

July 31, 2014 Woodswalker Mcintyre Ridge 5.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Went on a fun meetup hike. Good views and still some wildflowers in the meadows.

July 30 to August 2, 2014 Father Guido Sarducci Silver Falls 16.85 miles 3,750 feet gained 3 nights

Camped at Ohanapecosh & day hiked to the Hot Springs, Silver Falls & the Grove of the Patriarchs. Spent a day @ Sunrise & hiked up Burroughs Mtn.

July 26, 2014 acorn woodpecker South Breitenbush 14 miles 4,750 feet gained

Linked Bear Point and Park Ridge for a magnificent off trail high country day. Started and ended at South Breitenbush TH, to Jefferson Park, PCT for a 3/4 mile, then cross country all the way to Bear Point. See link to my TR on Portland Hikers for more info and pictures.
