September 21, 2014 Karl Mississippi Head 12.5 miles 4,500 feet gained

Took advantage of the last day of summer with the classic loop through Paradise Park, up and over Mississippi Head, farther up to the top of the Palmer ski lift, then bombing back down to Timberline at full bore as long as slope was suitable for boot skiing/skating. Beautiful day on the mountain, but nasty smoke in all the valleys from the 36 Pit Fire near E...

September 21, 2014 JM Mississippi Head 12.5 miles 4,500 feet gained

Awesome dayhike w/ Karl & Brad to 8600' on Mt Hood. Didn't quite make it up to the Illumination saddle, but great views (though increasingly smoky) and an amazing backdrop made for a memorable day.

September 20, 2014 Father Guido Sarducci Obstruction Peak 9.22 miles 3,000 feet gained

Took the Obstruction Peak trail to the Badger Valley cut off & followed that trail to Grand & Moose Lakes. Then ascended the Grand Valley trail back to the original TH.

September 14, 2014 Karl Rock Lake 15 miles 3,250 feet gained

**[Video added!]** Drove to the Breitenbush trailhead via Salem, rather than Estacada, due to the 36 Pit Fire burning along 224. That might've added a little time, but - good grief - that last little bit on FR4220 is unreal. Six or so miles that take nearly 50 minutes! Yikes. At any rate, once we got there, all was well other than the pall of smoke to our no...

September 14, 2014 Roman Rock Lake 11 miles 2,000 feet gained

Planned to do Obsidian but we left home late & also had uncertain smoke forecast for Three Sisters so we went to Jefferson Park (my dad never been there). Pretty hot to start, but cool and pleasant breeze at the lakes. Bays Lake was awesome. Fall color in the Park is starting nicely but the best will likely be next weekend. In some places it was loads of huc...

September 14 to September 15, 2014 Bosterson Broken Top 13.5 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

Hiked into Green Lakes around noon and set up camp. Left camp around 4pm headed for Broken Top. Took a little detour off trail until we found the climber path (note: it starts behind campsite #19). Left Elsie at the saddle and headed up the ridge. Stymied at the Catwalk by sketchy rock and having no protection and being solo; ran back and forth looking for s...

September 14, 2014 Nate Meyer Saddle Mountain 6 miles 1,500 feet gained

Got to the trailhead early to beat the masses. No clouds in the sky, but it was fairly hazy.

September 14, 2014 Eva Rees Cable Drop 7.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Short dayhike to test out some new shoes. This was one of my first hikes when I first moved to the PNW, and I've gotten much more capable since. I remember being completely overwhelmed the first time a few years ago, ha! Still a good climb, though. Less dirt and more rocks than I recall. Lake was totally melted out, but Lunch Rock was in the shade at 2:40 wh...

September 14, 2014 Pablo Ruckel Creek 9 miles 4,000 feet gained

Fire near hwy 224 blocked my plans to explore trails in the Clack so I did an exerciser in the Gorge -> Ruckel Ridge is always good for a workout.

September 13 to September 15, 2014 Stacey Copper Creek 33.5 miles 6,000 feet gained 2 nights

We started from the Road's End TH in King's Canyon NP around 9am Saturday morning. Most backpackers along our route were hiking the Rae Lakes Loop, but we had a different goal in mind; Shorty Lovelace's cabin in Vidette Meadow. From the National Register of Historic Places Nomination (1977): "Joseph Walter ("Shorty") Lovelace, 1886-1963, spent most of his li...

September 13, 2014 Roman Blue Lake 6.77 miles 1,000 feet gained

Fall colors (red huckleberry leaves) are near their peak now in Indian Heaven, loads of berries but they're falling off already, probably will last one more week. Zero mosquitoes, warm lakes - best time to visit the area.

September 13 to September 14, 2014 JM Hikers 14 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

Yay! 500 miles for the year already! Took the loved one around the loop, up Goat Ridge, camped above Jordan Basin below Hawkeye Point's "false summit". Terrific sunset and star filled night sky. I awoke a 3am and the moon had all the mountains lit up and I felt like I was on another planet. Goat Lake was 2/3 melted out, thin crust of ice in the morning. Ther...

September 12, 2014 acorn woodpecker Yocum Ridge 10 miles 2,750 feet gained

Took some friends and Acorn Jr to McNeil Point. The ridge between the point and Bald Mt. was windy and chilly. Conditions were perfect atop the point, though. Went up the climbers trail to McNeil and took the established trail back. On the way back the party got separated and the remaining three of us unexpectedly came back to the trailhead and the other two...

September 12, 2014 JM Lusted Reservoir 5 miles 750 feet gained

After work leg stretcher through the backdoor. No salmon yet, I'll keep checking.

September 12, 2014 Jen Janet Lake 12 miles 2,500 feet gained

Using a bike shuttle I was able to traverse the SW corner of Indian Heaven and visit Red Mountain Lookout. Got a few handfuls of huckleberries in the Lakes Basin. Someday I'll come back and visit " The Wart",

September 7, 2014 Eva Rees Barlow Pass 12 miles 2,750 feet gained

Started late, around 1pm. Done by 7:45. Quite a workout! Just wanted to get some outdoors time during the weekend, and we sure got it. After walking down the gravel road and making it to the trailhead the hike wanders around for a mile or so before starting in earnest. The first half is under the trees on mostly soft dirt. There are multiple switchbacks, som...

September 6 to September 8, 2014 Roman Ives Peak 17.5 miles 4,750 feet gained 2 nights

More fun times in my "summer home". Hiked in on Saturday and spent the night in high valley at 7400', just below Ives Peak summit. Awesome views all around - Mt. Adams, sharp-towered castle of Big and Little Big Horn, and of course the Ives. The moon was super-bright, didn't even need my flashlight. On Sunday morning went to the summit with my dog Pepper. Th...

September 5, 2014 Stacey Graves Creek 28 miles 4,000 feet gained

I have been wanting to get up to Enchanted Valley since I first heard about the chalet in January. A planned May trip was cancelled due to a miserable weather forecast, and with all the distractions of summer, just never got rescheduled. Then came the announcement of the big move. With a love of hiking and an engineering background, the chance to see them mo...

September 5 to September 7, 2014 Bosterson Granite Mountain Potholes 31 miles 8,000 feet gained 2 nights

1) TH to above the Robin Lakes 2) back down and around the valley on the PCT to Peggy's Pond 3) dawn summit of all three Mt. Daniel summits, then back to the TH

September 5 to September 7, 2014 acorn woodpecker Mount Daniel 31 miles 8,000 feet gained 2 nights

Glorious alpine hiking/scrambling in Alpine Lakes Wilderness in central Washington. Click link to trip report on Portland Hikers.

September 5 to September 6, 2014 Karl Enchanted Valley 28 miles 4,000 feet gained 1 night

Camped beside Lake Quinalt in order to get an early start the next morning up to Enchanted Valley, to see the chalet that was about to fall into the East Fork Quinalt River due to severe undercutting. The NPS has embarked on an emergency stabilization project to protect the river by moving the historic chalet about 100 feet farther away. Prep was well underw...

September 5, 2014 Jen 4 miles 500 feet gained

Failed attempt to drive to Castle Lake. Salvaged the day by stopping at a nice chunk of forest for a wander. Collected several pounds of chanterelles. On the way home I found an awesome swimming hole with rope swing, ripe blackberries, and no party pigs in sight!

September 5, 2014 Pablo Ruckel Creek 8 miles 3,750 feet gained

Found a nice gully to get up Rufus Ridge (the ridge to the west of Rudolph Spur). Nice unique views across to Table and Greenleaf and looking west down the Columbia.

September 4, 2014 JM 3 miles 250 feet gained

After work exploration of a Metropark. Nice disc golf course, trails through the forest were so so.

September 4, 2014 JM Crampton Reservoir 3.5 miles 750 feet gained

Quiet walk on a seldom visited part of the park, on the opposite bank of the river. Driveway, service road, fisherman's trail, road walk to make a loop. <iframe width="500px" height="500px" src="http://caltopo.com/map?id=096J"></iframe>

September 4, 2014 Team Reynolds 9 miles 1,500 feet gained

After getting setup for the start of another school year I needed a quiet walk in the woods. This was almost perfect, if it hadn't been for the couple on their horses it would have been the perfect solitude forest walk. Great trail, hardly any horse "sign" and a nice ford across the little creek. I feel better.

September 1 to September 7, 2014 Kyle Meyer Lowry Gulch 49 miles 12,000 feet gained 6 nights

I was turning 30 on September 5th, and I used that as an excuse to do something I'd always wanted to—take a long meandering trip through the Wallowas. It turned out fantastic. We had gorgeously sunny, warm weather during the day with frozen nights. We spooked up families of grouse, met a herd of elk, drank coffee and watched salmon run in the Minam, and caug...

September 1, 2014 Melissa Elk Cove 8.8 miles 2,500 feet gained

Seven of us camped at Kinnikinnick Campground over Labor Day weekend. Light usage and plenty of empty sites. Monday we hiked to Elk Cove. This was the perfect time of year to do this hike. Huckleberries were at their peak ripeness, wildflowers were everywhere, and this hike is hard to beat.

September 1, 2014 Karl Island Lake 20 miles 6,000 feet gained

Incredible day! Began at the Norway Pass trailhead on the Boundary Trail. Hooked a right on the Lakes Trail at Bear Pass. Dodged off-trail after a couple of dropdead gorgeous miles through the lakes area, and followed elk trails over to Venus Lake. Bushwhacked from there up to the top of Mount Venus and celebrated there with a light lunch. Continued back eas...

September 1, 2014 JM Campground: Killen Creek 10.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

Late summer hike up to unknown (at the time) lake at 7505' on North side of Mt Adams. Killer views almost all day, several groups on the way out from Labor Day backpacks, almost no one above PCT (Except fellow ph'er "Spitfire" and husband). Found a deserted campfire ring still smoking in the meadows...ugh. We saw 20+ goats at various times on the slopes arou...
