Beautiful day, beautiful views. No bugs, no down logs and wonderful views and flowers at the top.

June 25 to June 26, 2016 runandsew 8.5 miles 3,250 feet gained 1 night

Got a late start on the trail ~ as in 5:30pm, but had a bug free and more important, WIND - FREE and sand free backpack. There were three other parties camped near the shelter. One trio was heading from Timberline around the mountain. They looked like hearty souls and will likely succeed.

Upper Lena Lake is still pretty much snow covered. Trail is in decent shape. There are a few blow downs you need to crawl under & just a couple of small areas of the trail still covered by snow. The river crossing is pretty much a none issue at the moment.

June 25, 2016 Karl 12.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Got a really late start, and didn't hit the trailhead until nearly 1pm. Which turned out perfect, as the clouds were just moving away from Hood's summit as I turned off 26 in Zigzag. Winding up Salmon River Rd, the pavement was steaming, and it seemed like a huge downpour had just passed through. Pretty well validates that sleeping in can actually be compati...

June 24, 2016 Jim 10 miles 2,000 feet gained

This is more of a compilation of day trips than an actual hiking trip report. We ("the family") spent a couple weeks hitting high spots in Bavaria with several cross border forays into Austria. The Bavarian alps remind me a lot of the north cascades while the Austrian alps go to the next level altogether. I did find it interesting that most hiking signs are ...

June 22, 2016 Woodswalker 10 miles 2,250 feet gained

I always make at least one trip here. I usually try and hit the area when the tarns are just starting to melt and then again when the flowers are blooming at McNeil point. Yesterday was in between those two windows and still wonderful. I got a crazy late start so I didn't get pics of the slightly past peak of bloom on Bald Mountain and my camera ran out of s...

June 19, 2016 Roman 11.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

What a hike to forget my camera! Sunny, quiet, almost zero snow and zero bugs, and cool temps - perfect combination.

June 19, 2016 Karl 23.5 miles 5,000 feet gained

Picked nearly the longest day of the year for another megaloop (by my standards, at any rate) in the blast zone. Given how late the sun would be up, we got a lazy start around 9:30 at the Coldwater Lake boat launch. Best trailhead restrooms anywhere. The lake was calm and reflective as we walked along its north shore. Foxglove and daisies were putting on an ...

June 19 to June 20, 2016 runandsew 3.5 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

Father's Day backpack with our three adult kids. Full moon going into the Summer Solstice. Short and SUPER SANDY because the wind kicked up a lot. Our backyard looks like a triage area with all the stuff drying out after being hosed down.

June 19, 2016 Rhonda 10 miles 1,500 feet gained

Did this lovely hike taken from Matt Reeders 101 Hikes in the Majestic Mount Jefferson Region. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday, however some notes. The good: Had the hike to ourselves. Only saw two people coming off Marion Mountain summit the entire hike, other than that not a soul to be seen. Its a fantastic viewpoint with an easy grade to get to. No huffin...

June 12, 2016 Karl 10.5 miles 3,750 feet gained

Got a chance to play "tour guide" for a couple friends who'd never been up this iconic peak before. The day turned out so much better than any of us had hoped. Just perfect hiking weather, in every possible regard. We pungled up the $5 to park at Bonneville Hot Springs, now that the owner of that resort has posted "No Trespassing" signs at the old Aldrich Bu...

June 12 to June 13, 2016 runandsew 9.5 miles 2,750 feet gained 1 night

Incredible afternoon hike after our son's PSU graduation in the morning. Starry night. Front clouded us in this morning.

June 11, 2016 Karl 4.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Needed a walk in the woods to while away the afternoon. Hard to think of a much nicer place to do it.

June 7, 2016 Woodswalker 10.6 miles 500 feet gained

Nice stroll from Little Crater Lake to the dam at Timothy Lake. Great way to beat the heat. Some bugs were swarming me in the morning for about the first mile and then it was fine. The Rhodie bloom is on!

June 6, 2016 Jim 7 miles 2,250 feet gained

I needed a nice low key hike to work out the stiff legs from Saturday's Beacon Rock 25k. There's still no finer place in the PNW than Silver Star. Just an awesome place to sit and eat lunch. The views were a little hazy but I could still see as far as North Sister to the south and saddle mountain to the west.

June 5 to June 6, 2016 runandsew 16.5 miles 3,250 feet gained 1 night

Nice overnight with our son on a sweltering day in Portland. Snow and a fair amount of bugs above 5,000'.

June 5, 2016 Woodswalker 10 miles 750 feet gained

Looking to beat the heat, we decided on a stroll and dip strategy along the less crowded portion of the Lewis River. The lower arch of Curley Creek falls was actually visible. We slowly made out way up the trail as far as the theoretical ford that's shown on the USGS maps. Which as far as I can tell is not any better than most of the rest of the river for fo...
