A wonderful blustery day on the mountain. Right now the snow is packed and fine with just spikes. Once you get close to Timberline, the route is less obvious, because of wind blown snow, but if you have been before it would be fine. We saw no one above the A-frame. Stunning.

Did the loop clock wise. Put on the micro spikes at around 3400'. Was nice and warm sitting on the summit rock. Could clearly see Rainier, Adams & St. Helens from the summit.

Originally had plans to hike on Saturday with a friend, but she canceled on me last minute so I ended up sleeping in on Saturday and wasting a beautiful day. To make up for it on Sunday, Zane and I got an early start from Portland to try to beat the crowds that would surely be heading to Mt. Hood on a bluebird day. Our objective was an easy stroll to Tamanaw...

January 11, 2019 Woodswalker 16 miles 4,250 feet gained

Wonderful day back in the gorge. Hoping for sun we headed up to the top of Larch Mountain from Multnomah falls. It was pretty breezy at the top. Very limited snow on the way up. A bit icy on the steps up to the top. Spikes would be useful, but we didn't need them. On the way back, we decided to head down Oneonta trail and loop up through the crater back to t...

Escaped the rain for a mystical hike up into the snow zone on top of the wall. Fresh tracks for hours!

A good friend of mine who is getting over some health problems that have prevented her from strenuous activity has decided to make 2019 the year she starts hiking with me. She insisted it would be a girls only day on the trail, so we headed out alone at 8 am from Portland. I decided to pick a trail that I knew would have no gain, so as not to scare her off f...

Tons of cars, but not as crowded as I expected. Beautiful day, great companionship and lots of beautiful moments big and small. Happy New Year all!

December 31, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 3 miles 500 feet gained

With the Wife having to work on New Years & the alma mater playing in Rose Bowl Football game ( go Dawgs!) the annual New Years Day Family Hike became the New Years Eve Family Hike. Nice short hike with nice views of the Olympics at the Cove.

Last hike of the year! A pleasant, mostly flat stroll along the Deschutes River, starting at Deschutes River State Park. I wore my glacier glasses for the hike and my eyes still hurt from all the sunshine I soaked in today. The burn from this summer really has the area looking alive and green, as the hillsides are reawakening. We even ran into some wildflowe...

December 30 to December 31, 2018 runandsew 5 miles 1,250 feet gained 1 night

New Year's backpack to watch the fireworks at Timberline Lodge. This bookmarked our year out since we camped at the same spot New Year's Eve 2017. It was 12 degrees and cold, but we had two of our adult children with us as well as our daughter's ex and were able to scrape enough gear together for five so it was a deliriously great night! Last year I had trou...

Stayed at Sunriver for a few days. On the first day we were able to ski out the door. Visited Benham Falls and Swampy Lakes Snow park. Highlight of the trip was getting a cat ride up to Paulina Lake from the 10 mile Snowpark. We skiied around for a few hours, then had dinner at the lodge.

December 23, 2018 Woodswalker 5.7 miles 750 feet gained

Perfect day with a good friend checking out the mossy and watery forest in this area. Perfect day! Much prettier than I expected.

December 22, 2018 Sarah Johnson 5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Short and sweet pretty little hike on the eastern Washington side of the gorge. I love this area, and seeing how the landscape changes as you drive out from Portland. The trail starts with a somewhat steep climb, with an option to check out the abandoned convict road when you hit the sign for the orchard. We peaked around the bend but a significant landslide...

December 22, 2018 Woodswalker 4.8 miles 500 feet gained

Went with friends to help switch out film on a wildlife camera for Cascadia Wild. We walked along Skyline road for a few miles before cutting off to the camera. Minimal snow that was pretty packed down. Spikes were helpful. Fun adventure.

December 16, 2018 Woodswalker 8 miles 1,500 feet gained

Lots of lush green and some great waterfalls on this new to me trail. Wonderful day with a great crew.

December 16, 2018 Sarah Johnson 5.7 miles 750 feet gained

With rain in the forecast but still wanting to get out, we decided to go for something easy and not far from Portland. Odd little hike, as parts of it are on road and right through grazing cows. (They seemed pretty docile, unlike the cows on the Fort to Sea Trail by the coast.) Shellburg Falls were easily accessible, while grand views of the other falls in t...

Wanted to check a trail I saw earlier from SR-14, but it only went ~50 yards to stone house ruins (which were pretty cool). Schwacked up above the ruins for an hour, but brush was pretty bad, what looked like deer trails just dissipated in the brush. On the way back went up Archer Mtn's High Valley, so my pup could run in the open. Picked some apples in old ...

December 14, 2018 Jen 13.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Started at Mazama Snow Park and took the Barlow Trail to Trillium. Then miles of fresh tracks on the Mud Creek loop.

December 10, 2018 Woodswalker 7.6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Still felt like I needed another recovery hike, without much eg. Hike today from Bridge of the Gods aways down the PCT, visiting Dry C reek Falls on the way. Hit snow right away, but it was just enough to cushion the tread and make things beautiful. Melting fast though.

December 8, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 10.76 miles 3,500 feet gained

There are 4 trails to the summit of Townsend. I have never hiked it from the lower TH off of forest road 27 before & it adds approx. 1.2 miles & 600’ to the assent compared to starting @ the upper TH. Trail was in nice condition with a bit of snow on & off the final 1000’ from the summit.

December 8, 2018 Sarah Johnson 6 miles 1,500 feet gained

It was a winter wonderland in the gorge today - our curiosity bringing us to check out the fire damage to the newly reopened trail. Trail was mostly empty when we arrived around 9 am - but was bustling with incoming poor footwear choices as we rounded our way down to the Multnomah end. Microspikes used on the descent and we were glad to have them on slick tr...

December 6, 2018 Jen 10 miles 3,000 feet gained

So happy to be out in the woods. Grinning for hours. PSA: it's time to start carrying microspikes!

December 5, 2018 Woodswalker 7.5 miles 500 feet gained

I still needed some flattish recovery hikes so I did a short section of the Wildwood trail, starting at Germantown road. Not muddy yet.

December 2, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 8.6 miles 2,500 feet gained

Hiked up to where the trail connects with the Mt. Ellinor lower trail. Trail currently snow free.

December 2, 2018 Roman 3.5 miles 750 feet gained

Nice evening in the forest, but I was surprised at the degree of "decommissioning" on unofficial trails up there. BV Plateau is pretty much trail-less area now, for better or for worse (with the exception of Palmer Mill Rd).

December 2, 2018 Jen 4 miles 750 feet gained

All of my recent adventure plans have been thwarted by responsibilities. Today I was able to sneak in a morning romp. It was wet,but I was happy to get out and be absolutely alone in the woods.

November 26 to November 27, 2018 runandsew 5 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

We saw a break in the weather and it turned out to be one of the best nights out in snow. 80% moon. Hoping for lots more like it this winter.

November 24, 2018 Sarah Johnson 3.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Felt run down and was dealing with some pretty awful cramps on Saturday, but had promised to hike with my boyfriend and our friend Jason. Only made it part way up Hunchback Trail, when my dog broke her dewclaw and starting bleeding all over the place. I bandaged her up and made my way back down the trail, defeated. No views for me after climbing switchbacks ...
