I picked a local hike in a quieter section of Forest Park, masked up and went for it early in the day.

April 10 to April 11, 2020 Father Guido Sarducci 15.6 miles 3,000 feet gained 1 night

Hiked a couple miles past the decommissioned National Park Campground/Ranger Station and spent the night at Dose Forks Camp. There were a few people camping at the old campground but I had Dose Forks all to myself.

You've all seen these cool pinnacles north of Smith Rock from the highway. This is within the Crooked River National Grassland. I started at the equestrian corrals just outside of the Henderson OHV. Wide open country for ridgetop ramblings, cool pinnacles and rock formations for scramblings, no-one around at all. Fun to look DOWN on Smith Rock.

Hiked from the Big Creek TH up to the Mt. Ellinor lower TH. Zero snow on the trail but the lower TH parking area still has snow. It is drivable if you have the right vehicle..... which was evident by the 3 high clearance SUV's parked there.

March 28, 2020 Father Guido Sarducci 5.2 miles 500 feet gained

With the park now closed to car traffic and one having to hike in to get to the trails it is eerily quite at PD.

March 20, 2020 Woodswalker 15.4 miles 2,750 feet gained

Great day out on Herman Creek Trail to the river crossing beyond Cedar Swamp. There was still a bit of slushy snow up at Cedar swamp, but it was beautiful as always.

March 17, 2020 Jen 5.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Well since the ski area was closed we decided to just take over the slopes, ha ha! It was surreal to be traversing the slopes on this bluebird day with no-one around and the chairlifts stilled. I rented BC Nordic skis that weren't so great on the 3 hour long trip upwards on the stiff, sometimes icy surface of West Leg Road, but they sure helped me carve some...

A lot changed in the world between this hike and my last. Faced with uncertainty whether we should hike together or not, a few of us decided we could still practice social distancing on the trail. With one ankle injury among us, we opted for the flatness of the Deschutes. It was a gorgeous day - snow juxtaposed with spring blossoms. We all had heavy hearts b...

March 16, 2020 Woodswalker 11 miles 2,000 feet gained

Practiced a little social distancing out near Catherine Creek. Lovely day with snow, flowers and even one of those snow pinwheels, that usually show up on mountains during avalanche season.

March 15, 2020 Jen 7.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

The wind was wicked fierce on top.

March 11, 2020 Jen 7 miles 2,500 feet gained

Whacked a lot of bushes today. Stick in the eye, attacked by pricker bush, and a sharp scree rock pierced my favorite hiking pants. Excellent fun!

March 8, 2020 Sarah Johnson 9.3 miles 1,000 feet gained

The trailhead for this is about a mile south of the Clackamas River Trail. Quiet, low key day enjoying some old growth along a gentle trail. Went off trail to get closer to the Creek and almost took out a friend when I climbed out over a boulder. Note to self - more distance between friends when bushwhacking. It could have been bad, but luckily no one was ha...

Very pretty spring morning. Only a few trilliums blooming today, but lots of indian plum. In some areas there was a continuous carpet of waterleaf. In most of the other areas, the evil ivy rules.

March 1, 2020 Woodswalker 13.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

Waterfalls everywhere! Heading up Siouxon creek we took a side trip to Chinook Falls, scrambling down to the base of lots of falls. Then we headed back up Siouxon for views of Middle and Upper Siouxon Falls. Lots of weeping walls and even a rainbow in the spray. Turned around at the crossing near Calamity Creek. Totally amazing day.

Elbo Creek Trail is snow free all the way to the forest service road. Once you hit the road the snow was pretty much present most of the way to the 3700' summit of Buck Mtn. I used snow shoes but my partner just booted his way up to the top. No views from the summit....was cold, windy and foggy.

February 27, 2020 Woodswalker 11 miles 3,000 feet gained

Great day in the gorge. The trilliums are blooming near the trailhead. Looks like there is still a lot of snow over in the Silver Star area. Snow was visible near the top of Table area.

February 25, 2020 Jen 7.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Started out with a ridiculous bushwack, but then spent hours wandering the woods in my favorite go to wonderland. Didnt see anyone.

February 24, 2020 Sarah Johnson 11 miles 2,500 feet gained

It was a super moody day in the gorge, our 11 mile hike contained pouring rain, raging wind, hail, and periods of blue skies and sunshine. Our last glimpse of sunshine gave us a double rainbow, before the rain gods decided we needed another drenching for our last mile and a half out.

February 18, 2020 Jen 7 miles 1,000 feet gained

Ski/snowshoe combo up to the critter cam. No good animal pictures this time, but a banner day to be out on the mountain!

February 18, 2020 Woodswalker 9 miles 1,250 feet gained

Beautiful clear day walking up to the Clear Lake Lookout. The road in was well consolidated by ATV's and the couple staying in the tower let us up for a quick look at the view. Afterwards we did a short add on down to Clear Lake which was drained and fairly empty. Astonishing! Awesome day.

Last class with the students-a ski tour inside a snowglobe!

February 13, 2020 Jen 8 miles 3,000 feet gained

We rented this extremely rustic cabin for the night. Fun ski in. Had some issues with the woodstove and got a few facefulls of dust and smoke. Next day, my asthma was terrible. In the morning, we skiied east to a landing area at 5300 ft. I was short of breath and having trouble keeping up with my fast moving friends. I sent them onward to climb Mt Mcloughlin...

February 12, 2020 Woodswalker 10 miles 1,500 feet gained

Glorious day in the snow. We started at the Frog Lake side and went up past the lakes. Trail # 482 from Upper Twin was untracked so we went up trail #495 from the north of the lake and took a short connector over to a more heavily traveled section of the #482 and from there up to Palmateer. Had lunch and birthday cake up at the top and basked in the warmth a...

February 10, 2020 Woodswalker 8.3 miles 1,750 feet gained

Grass widows are sparsely blooming down low and south of the road I saw one Columbia Desert Parsley blooming. Such a great area.

February 8, 2020 Father Guido Sarducci 5.56 miles 2,500 feet gained

Compared to nearby Mt. Rose and Mt. Ellinor this is a less hiked trail, probably due to its steepness and limited views. The first mile, to mile and 1/2, is really pretty awesome if you like big trees, lotsa moss and a crashing, roaring creek. It feels like you are traveling within a forest from Lord of the Rings.... with towering moss covered rocks/trees an...

February 4, 2020 Jen 5 miles 500 feet gained

Trails nice and dry today!

February 2, 2020 Father Guido Sarducci 6.77 miles 3,500 feet gained

Snow began around the "Horse Camp" area and that's where I put on the microspikes. Fairly clear boot path to the summit.
