Staying at the beach with family. Up early for a quick jaunt. Previous day very rainy, trail was terrible- roots mud and long stretches of standing water. Required lots of attention to footwork. Loved the big trees and when I reached the tip of the point, enjoyed watching numerous seabirds below including at least 20 pelicans. Low tide. On the return trip I ...

It was an interesting drive to the Thunder Mountain Trailhead. After leaving the Clackamas River area, we headed up forest service roads, winding our way up to the trailhead. Past trip reports stated the road being suitable for passenger vehicles, and it MOSTLY was. Lots of trees were down across the road, but luckily it looked like someone had recently gone...

The majority of the elevation gain is within the first mile and a half. After that it's a nice up and down ridge hike until your reach the trails end. Nice views of the Stuart Range, Lake Kachess, Lake Easton and Cle Elum Lake from the ridge.

June 18, 2020 Father Guido Sarducci 6.78 miles 3,000 feet gained

Trail became entirely snow covered at 5300' and that is where I donned the micro spikes. I got as far as 6000' before I had to bail a couple of 100' from the summit due to unstable snow conditions. Probably could have made it to the top if I had brought crampons and an ice axe. Oh well, live and learn. Nice views though of the Goat Rocks, Mt. Adams and Mt. H...

I was scouting a fieldtrip and took a short jaunt down the road from Rooster Rock and then drove up to the closed winter gate on Larch Mountain road and hiked a ways down Palmer Mill road which is the road that heads Northish toward the river and eventually eastish to Multnomah Basin. It was amazingly lovely. 100's of shades of green and 5 or 6 springs and c...

Went up the Benson Plateau from Herman Creek TH up to the junction with Benson Way. The beargrass on the way up was at full bloom.

June 17, 2020 Jen 11.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

Great day but Hood never came out of the clouds. Feet got a little wet crossing the Muddy Fork.

June 8 to June 9, 2020 Jen 16 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

This is in the Cottonwood Canyon State Park. Met my pals at the TH. We hiked up past the Lost Corral and set up camp above the mouth of Esau Canyon, then went a-wandering the hills above. Saw some baby deers! They froze and were camoflaged very well. (Used zoom on my camera, didnt get too close) Love all the gorgeous basalt. Explored the Rattlesnake Canyon a...

Solitude and social distance hiking on a fine rainy day. It didn't end up being the sufferfest we anticipated. Picked a relatively obscure, flat hike expecting the rain to be terrible. Pleasantly surprised when the sun showed its face and we had to take off our sweaty rain layers. Road to trailhead is full of huge pot holes, not suitable for my prius. I park...

Headed over to the east side of the pass off of I-90 to try to escape the Juneuary weather predicted for the weekend. Mostly were successful. I have never hiked this trail and it was fairly steep with a short section where you climb 1500' in one mile. Once to the top of the ridge you can see Baldy to the east and from there it is a nice up and down ridge hik...

We started at Clinger Camprgound and had a great day walking along the ridgeline and climbing a few buttes. The 44 Trails Association has done some great maintenance work up there as well as having added some options and done some rerouting. There are new signs, but it's still confusing in a few places. Caltopo has most but not all of the new updates if you v...

June 1, 2020 Jen 7.5 miles 3,750 feet gained

I drove up to the Rooster Rock TH and threw my bike in the bushes. Then drove down and started at the Old Bridge TH. I was expecting a ridge walk, but this was more of a "below the ridge walk", in the cool woods for several hours with just a few wildflower meadows and viewpoints along the way. Trail is very well maintained. It was a pleasant gradual uphill g...

This is one of my favorite spring time overnighters. The road to the Deer Park Campground remains closed so no car campers were present. It was quite nice having the campground to ourselves...….along with the 1/2 dozen curious deer.

May 29, 2020 Woodswalker 4.7 miles 500 feet gained

Nice wanderings all over the park exploring it's nooks and crannies.

May 28, 2020 Jen 5 miles 500 feet gained

Well I heard the Larch area was open so I headed up to one of my favorite areas to wander. Had been avoiding this for a few years because of a massive clearcut around 2015 at the Palmer mill townsite. The young trees are now tall enough to obscure the carnage. Still some big trees and cool alder hallways around. The trails have been lightly trod in recent ti...

I didn't research Scout Camp hike enough, I had just glanced at a BLM brochure online and decided upon it. Had I read more, I would have started left instead of right. Instead, I started right, down a terrifying skinny trail with steep dropoffs, where one wrong move would make one tumble into the canyon. I couldn't enjoy myself as my partner refused to leash...

May 24 to May 25, 2020 runandsew 3.5 miles 750 feet gained 1 night

We couldn't resist a lovely night on the mountain so we snuck out of lockdown.

May 24, 2020 Sarah Johnson 4 miles 250 feet gained

Goth in the ground. As (kind of) expected, busy at the beginning. I will never understand why people make such a pain in the ass drive just to do a short section and leave. Either way, barely a soul past the first crack. We had to skip some sections that we found too hard to scramble with the dog.

May 24 to May 26, 2020 Jen 16 miles 2,000 feet gained 2 nights

I've been wanting to do this bike/ski/climb trip for the past few years. Now have an adventure buddy who can rock all three. Sunday: We put our skis in a kiddie trailer and slowly rode up McKenzie Pass from the gate. Stashed our bikes and trailer at Lava Camp Lake, and attempted to ski south on the PCT. Well it was a little too late this year for the skiing....

May 24, 2020 Woodswalker 10.3 miles 2,000 feet gained

This one had been on my list for far to long. Beautiful day in wonderful late spring forest. Anemones, trillium and glacier lillies, even a little paintbrush and the biggest log of petrified wood I've ever seen. We started from the north and headed south to Three Corner Rock, then back to the PCT and headed south until our turnaround time. Considering it was...

May 23, 2020 Sarah Johnson 5 miles 250 feet gained

Our only plan last weekend was to hit up a forest road and find a place to disperse camp away from others. We ended up near Newberry Crater, so we hit up a few short hikes to waste time until dinner. Obsidian flow was still snow covered, so what crowds were around basically walked up the steps and turned around. The only spot I felt uncomfortable was walking...

I've been active, but was reluctant to post. Using this one for all the little local forays I did in Forest Park, Marquam trails, Tillamook Forest and such. Will post separate TRs for the more interesting trips. Fri March 27, 2020. Maple Loop variation: 8miles, 1000 ft. 10 humans one dog. Forest perennials coming up. Violet and trillium blooming. Tread a bit...

Confusing mess of logging roads, but we made it using a mix of written directions and looking at gaia. Beautiful hike, everything was green and the trail was mostly empty. Glad to see the Gifford open up for recreation, though still limited. Be sure to predownload map of the area before going as googlemaps is not reliable to find the trailhead in my opinion.

May 11, 2020 Jen 4 miles 250 feet gained

The park had just reopened a few days before my visit. Started in the equestrian area and it really had a wild, abandoned feel to it. Biome similar to Bend, with Pondersa pine and open understory. This river feels like it's in the wilderness, rather than in the suburbs of a small city. Love the basalt formations here.

May 8, 2020 Woodswalker 1 miles 250 feet gained

Glorious day. With a nice east wind everything was green hued flickering light and shadows. I saw an owl right next to the trail and a very large tree up hill snap off in the wind.

Was planning on climbing Mt. Ellinor but the road to the TH is gated approx. 5 miles from the lower TH so decided to hike Mt. Rose instead There is still a bit of snow approx. 1/4 past the horse camp but the final climb to the summit is snow free.

May 5, 2020 Jen 3 miles 250 feet gained

Enroute to a 2 week deployment in Spokane for a COVID outbreak. My intention was to go to Potholes Coulee, but Google maps brought me to Potholes State Park. This is mostly an anglers boat ramp with very little hiking so after a frustrating lakeside wander, I headed to nearby Blythe Lake which was awesome! Followed a deer trail to a cool rim. Fun scrambly ri...

May 3, 2020 Jen 6 miles 1,250 feet gained

The drive is a bit creepy on the approach to TH. Hoping for some spring Morchellas. No morels but found an antler. Saw 2 cyclists, tons of elk sign, nice flowers and birds.

April 27 to April 28, 2020 Jen 8 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

Pat's Cabin Canyon is a BLM wilderness study area. Located just north of the Painted Hills Unit on Burnt Ranch Road. It is just beautiful. So dreamy wandering up and down here. You travel along an old road or in the canyon creek bed (dry). Too bad there isnt a year round water source up in the canyon, although I did see some seeps. I camped near the mouth at...

April 26, 2020 Jen 6.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

Escape to the high desert! Took the off trail route suggested by Barbara Bond in her 75 scrambles book. Had fun wandering the upper basalt layers of the Carroll Rim. Hedgehogs blooming on the summit. Looked down on the Painted Hills unit, which was closed.

April 26, 2020 Father Guido Sarducci 8.96 miles 2,250 feet gained

I have not hiked this one in sometime and forgot how cool the first couple miles are. One hikes up a steep mossy valley with old growth Douglas Firs clinging to the rocky cliffs, with a roaring creek and a water fall thrown in for good measure. I frequently find it amazing the places where trees can grow. Hiked a bit past the 2nd view point.

April 24, 2020 Father Guido Sarducci 7.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

Up the Section Line trail to West Summit 3, then traversed to the High School Trial using the TMT. Descended via the HS Trail.

April 20, 2020 Jen 10.5 miles 3,750 feet gained

Started early, ran the river trail and some of the traverse. Saw only 1 person on traverse, and then about 15 people and 7 dogs on the final 3 mile leg down Kings which is a brutal descent, don’t care for it at all.

My partner works for Trackers teaching outdoor school (well, he's now teaching outdoor school online!) so we had access to their gated private site, BREC in Sandy Oregon. None of us had hiked in forever due to everything being shut down, so we gathered up our roommate and took a stroll. I've mostly been getting my outdoor fix through long bike rides (and I'm...

April 19, 2020 Father Guido Sarducci 9.2 miles 3,250 feet gained

Parked about a mile from the upper TH due to snow remaining on the roadway. There are varying routes and boot paths to the summit so this time of year its a good idea to have a GPS to refer to. Glissade a fair distance down the mountain on the descent.
