Quick overnight trip to test a new pack and sleeping gear. Walked 4 miles on a rails to trails trail and then up into the Willapa Hills to camp near a river. Hiked out the next morning. Great early spring trip and the new gear worked out great.

I was looking for a nice trail run and this area was recommended. About 8 miles of trails in the park, and then the trail that follows Lacamas Lake goes on for a few miles. Great for being so close to home—a nice alternative to Forest Park.

Pleasant, easy first half. Mixed snow/mud trail on north side. Gorge-eous views from Fallen Tree. What I call the second half of the hike is amazing...rough trail, basalt stacks, climbing through waterfalls...just note that the last 1.5 miles or so of the trail is closed from Feb through July 15th. Unless you feel like risking a whopping 100 dollar fine, don...

March 24, 2012 Roman 8 miles 3,250 feet gained

Hiked East trail (Heartbreak Ridge) up, then West trail (Windbreak Ridge) down. It was quite a slog because I didn't take my snowshoes - took 3 hours up, half of this in the last mile. Even though Table has barely 3400' elevation it was 3-4 feet of fresh snow on the summit, with upward to 6 feet in drifts! There were even small cornices near east overlook. S...

The Old Mt. Si trail is accessed from the Boulder Garden Loop Trail off of the Little Mt. Si Trail. The old trail is rougher & steeper then the new trail and and is shorter by approx. a mile. The great thing though is that it has much less traffic and is more secluded then the new trail. Snow began @ approx. the 2500' mark and that is where I donned the micr...

March 23 to March 25, 2012 Kyle Meyer 10 miles 250 feet gained 2 nights

Two friends and I made the long drive up to Olympic National Park's beaches to take advantage of the weather window over this weekend. It's a long drive, but worth it for the epic nature of the beaches there. We got to the Rialto Beach parking before noon and started hiking. The coast is not what I expected—steep stony beaches devoid of footprints drop steep...

March 23, 2012 Chris 2 miles 500 feet gained

Wandered around the Eagle Creek canyon for a while. Explored the use trails down to the creek, rather than hitting the falls.

March 23, 2012 Chris 2 miles 500 feet gained

Tried to snowshoe toward Twin Lakes from Frog Lake Snopark but the snow was too deep—each step with snowshoes postholed 1.5 ft into the concrete. Decided to drive towards the Gorge instead.

Part of the Maple Trail is closed (east of Firelane 4) due to a bridge out. You can climb up FL 4 to Lief Erickson, but it's slick as snot!

March 21, 2012 Reed 1 miles 250 feet gained

Just a simple hike up the ravine to a shelf with about 4 caves with neither one of them going more than 5 - 10' back.

March 18, 2012 Ken 15 miles 3,500 feet gained

Started out on the Iron Horse trail and traveled in the snow to Twin Falls state park. Took the trail to the end of the park then headed back in the snow using a headlamp. Was a nice hike, just snow picked up on the way back making an easy trek a bit more difficult. Still, a fun day in the snow. Saw very few people.

http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/ph/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11106 FS Road 3062 gated for winter, which added approx. 5 mi RT (was great for xc skiing).

Sunday Low Elevation Conditioner. No crowds, Some Hail. Never been up Eagle/Benson before, Climbed the first half mile or so, thinking of the Ruckel Ridge ascent to Eagle Benson drop and strolling Eagle Creek back to the trailhead. Anyone here done it? Route finding on the Benson in 3.5ft of snow might suck.

March 18, 2012 Roman 10.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Nice trail, just a bit of snow in places, just enough to make things beautiful but not enough to use snowshoes. It was snowing lightly most of the time, but we entirely escaped the rain. On the way back found the best (unofficial and unsigned) campsite I could possibly dream of.

March 18, 2012 Krystle 8 miles 2,750 feet gained

We tried to do Augspurger but the trail was too hard to follow so we turned back and did the Dog Mountain loop. There was a mean wind on the open trail, chips of ice and tiny hail were like razors on my face. Generally though, no rain or snow, and at the end there was some nice sun.

March 17, 2012 Cara 8 miles 3,000 feet gained

Still a little snowy when I went, so we made it most of the way up before we reached the snow level. Would have needed Yak-Traks to continue to the top. This is a great training hike for longer trips. Good for most of the hiking season.

March 17, 2012 WildBill9685 4 miles 250 feet gained

I was invited on another trip with my uncle and this one was cooler then Barlow pass. Awesome views of the mountain but there was tons of people.

March 17 to March 18, 2012 Barnaby B. 7.5 miles 1,250 feet gained 1 night

Really my first real camping trip. I hiked up here alone with the backpack that I just bought from REI, and the tent and sleeping bag that I had bought earlier for Occupy. The hawkeye campground is a great hike, up a small mountain, with a view of valleys below. The last part up the hill riht before the camp is surprisingly hard. Marin headlands are amazingl...

March 17, 2012 RenegadePilgrim 8 miles 1,000 feet gained

I'm a little bit behind on this trip report. I was on vacation in Maui and planned to do a few hikes while I was there. We woke up at 3a to drive from Makena to Haleakala NP to watch the sunrise. It was fabulous, but very much overcrowded with unprepared tourists who didn't get the memo that the top of the park is at 10K and the wind gusts up to 50mph. It wa...

Old Dam/Road Still Flooded. Walked South to the confluence of the old channel and the Columbia. The Hound loved it.

March 17, 2012 Chris 10 miles 2,500 feet gained

The plan was to do Table Mountain from BHS. Like all my plans, it didn't happen. The weather got absolutely miserable the farther you got back from the Columbia—fifty and sunny at the river, in the low thirties, sleeting and a mud slick at the "Table trailheads." Given that there would be no views at the top, I decided to make a loop out of it and swing by G...

March 14, 2012 Stephanie McCloud 1.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

White Rock, NM We intended to take the Blue Dot Trail or the Red Dot Trail but I'm not even sure that we even found either one. We ended up scrambling down the canyon to the Rio Grande, never found the trail, walked along the river for a while, then made our way back up. It was a very short trip, but more strenuous than I can remember doing for a very long t...

March 12 to March 15, 2012 Hendrik Morkel 40 miles 1,000 feet gained 3 nights

The first winter trip of a few members of the ultraleicht-trekking.com forum. Full trip report including photos at the link above.

March 10, 2012 WildBill9685 3 miles 2,000 feet gained

Found this one in a guide book. Fun but difficult hike, I'd almost say parts of it could be considered a scramble. It was raining this day which made the trip more interesting.

March 10, 2012 Kate Grenadier 4 miles 1,500 feet gained

This is an interesting hike...wasn't sure if I was on public or private property and wasn't sure where the top was. Fun hike though. Definitely desolate - I was the ONLY one there.

March 10, 2012 Christophe Deppe 6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Since it had been raining on the weekends for a while, I decided to go on a short snowshoe walk. I had to park near the freeway exit, so I walked up to the Talapus Lake Trailhead. I didn't decide to go any futher since it started pouring rain when I got up there, so I turned around and called it a day. Good enough to get some exercise in.

March 10, 2012 Randy Frost 8 miles 3,250 feet gained

It started out just rain....then wet slush....then snow....lots of it! We were going to do the loop back down the west ridge, but by the time we reached the summit, there was at least 3 feet of snow and it was hard to maneuver through without snowshoes. My micro spikes helped. No views and very windy and cold up top, so we didn't stick around or go to the vi...

Began hike from the TH off FS Road 73. Trail meanders east along the White River through beautiful old growth forest. Skookum falls are @ around 2.5 miles. Trail was in good shape with icy/snowy portions here and there but no traction devices were needed. Beside a few elk saw no one else on the trail.
