Hiked Hummocks trail for the first time - easy but beautiful 2.45 mile loop with half dozen lakes/ponds. Then we headed to nearby Coldwater Lake. The lake was frozen over, despite very warm (upper 50's) temperatures.

Up Heartbreak, then off trail up a ridge between the face and the talus field. Fierce wind blowing icy clouds. Best trip up Table I've had yet.

The Portland-Vancouver region was in the second week of a very strong inversion. I had just bought a new pair of snowshoes. Silver Star called out for an adventure. And what a great adventure it was! I never could have seen it in this sort of glory without the new toys. I started at about 1600' elevation, which was about as far as one could reasonably drive ...

Amazing Day. High pressure in full effect. Pics to Come. Snowshoes from the trailhead, broke trail up to the summits. Then bushwhacked straight down the ridge. Picnic under an ancient Sugar Pine. Epic Views.

On an anniversary vacation to San Diego, my wife and I decided to take a beach hike in Torrey Pines State Park. Near the world famous golf course we parked and took a use path along a ridge overlooking multi-million dollar homes to a very steep set of stairs almost 400 feet down to the beach and ocean below. We watched sand pipers scurry on the sand, saw par...

I was planning on doing Newton Creek for a shorter morning hike, but things were very mushy due to the nice weather up on Hood, which made things painfully slow. So I decided to make better use of my time and head down to a place I hadn't been before—Tamanawas Falls. This is a nice little hike, and it's definitely worth doing in the snow. The pictures don't ...

Fabulous loop for whenever you have a spare morning or afternoon, and are looking for a hike near the cities! Portion below SR-14 closed from February 1 through July 15, though. My team (Seahawks) were losing bad, so I threw the pack together and headed up the gorge. It was really a beautiful day for January, and the trail was in fine shape. Good to get anot...

Snow conditions were perfect - 3-5 inches of soft powder over hard, icy crust. Not slippery (though I did use crampons for the steepness), no postholing, and for so much snow around it was surprising to see almost none on wind-scoured Heartbreak Ridge. OTOH, on the summit there were drifts at least 5 feet high. "Old route" on the edge of the ridge is now muc...

Great Day. Attached some pics. Spotted a looney. No snowshoes needed, only due to nice packed down trail. There is a lot of snow at 2400' right now. Microspikes are being purchased this week. Tall gaiters and Sticks did just fine. Awesome Sunday in the Gorge!

With the right conditions, this is a really rewarding ski / snowshoe tour from either Barlow Pass or Frog Lake. We did it as a 5.5-mile RT ski tour from Barlow Pass. We followed the PCT south to the junction with the Upper Twin Lake trail, dove off-trail after a few hundred meters, and made our way down to Palmateer Camp Meadows through old growth and second...

Went back for another attempt at making an igloo. The snow conditions were even less conducive, but the weather was *amazing*. I took laps down some excellent snow in between block cutting for the failed igloo, we built a big fire, drank all the whiskey, and had a wonderful time. This campsite is aces—big views of Hood, Adams, Helens, and Rainier as well as ...

Started 6am at Herman Creek and took the PCT up to the Benson Plateau. The snow line is around 2000' and we probably put snowshoes on around 2500' or even higher - it's pretty well consolidated for a good while. We traipsed along the eastern edge of the Platter and dropped down to Camp Smokey, then continued on for a little bit looking for a good lunch/turna...

It was nice out today. A bit shorter of a trip than planned due to a late start and bad roads taking up more time than expected. About 20º out, but breaking trail kept the cold in check. The snow was powdery and just a little sinky. I ended up turning around at the terrible traverse—the snow looked fine, and the avalanche forecast was okay, but because I was...

Peder and I strolled up a Starvation-Defiance snowshoe loop. We cut some switchbacks and went straight up a huge, steep snow hill (fun!), then went up the old road around the south side of Warren Lake up to the summit. Went down the talus field and shortcut across another talus field to the west along the Wyeth Gap to hit the Defiance Trail down - need to do...

This was my first time up North Pack Monadnock. I typically hike Pack Monadnock, but I wanted a change since I have been up Pack many times. North Pack Monadnock is the last mountain of the 21-mile Wapack Trail. I was the only car in the parking lot and did not see anyone else on the mountain. Note - the parking lot has not been plowed and my car (Ford Explo...

This was my first winter hike up Pack Monadnock, a mountain I frequently hike in the spring/summer/fall. I went up the Wapack trail (yellow markers - walk a little ways up the auto road and look left for the yellow blazes). It was a beautiful day, warm for a New Hampshire winter day. It was also very clear, which provided great views. The trail was packed sn...

Beautiful day on the Old Salmon River and Salmon River Trails! Plenty of snow on the ground with many icy spots. We wore Kahtoola's, which helped immensely. We were surprised that very few people were on the trail, but that worked for us!

3 Day winter backpack from Macks Canyon Campground down the Deschutes River to the mouth of the Columbia in The Dalles. After a long car shuttle, we got underway. This was a group snowshoe to Tanner Butte that didn't quite make it. The Eagle Creek parking lot was covered in a sheet of ice, as was the entire staircase up to the portage road, and Road 777 was totally frozen over up to the 401 trailhead. We started with 7 people and ended with 3 after some bailed en-route. We final 3 decided to turn around due to time re...
