Excellent sunny day on the mountain. Full trip report on the blog.

February 10, 2013 Roman 2.6 miles 1,250 feet gained

Not knowing which of the two was Mitchell Point, hiked upper and lower one. Both were very nice. The wind was hard, but sun more than made for it. Saw a couple of grass widows.

February 10, 2013 The Angry Hiker 8 miles 2,500 feet gained

I have no idea where the hell I was. My best guess is the ridge just before Olallie Lake.

February 9, 2013 Karl 9.9 miles 2,750 feet gained

This trek up a virtually barren ridge on the south side of Coldwater Lake, just north of Johnston Ridge, could be spectacular! On a clear day. Today we climbed into the clouds and near-whiteout conditions, at times almost surreal. It was another good test of the new snowshoes. We wandered through and past much blowdown from the 1980 eruption, and even passed...

February 9, 2013 Chris 5 miles 1,250 feet gained

A quick trip up to Tri-County/Ghost Ridge and a bit beyond. Cloudy weather. Hard snowpack.

February 9, 2013 B-Dog 5 miles 2,750 feet gained

New Summit - 2 of 20 for the Year 2013 Had a great day out...even though the weather report didn't pan out as expected. Lots of fresh powder goodness and steep mixed climbing on the ridge. A short approach in the winter with some good alpine climbing.

February 9, 2013 Bosterson 13 miles 3,500 feet gained

Started at Wyeth. Took the 400 west to a talus field and ascended the left side of a prominent pinnacle (apparently called Wyeth Crown) that I've had my eye on since last June. Some more exciting off trailing than anticipated, excellent views out at the pinnacle, then up its mother ridge to flatter terrain and up near Deadwood Camp. Took Gorton Creek out to ...

February 8, 2013 Jen 7.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

Just a few nice snowfields to traverse at the top. Not a single bootprint. Had a nap in a meadow on a warm spectacular day in February.

February 4 to February 5, 2013 RenegadePilgrim 6 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

I've been itching to get out for a while so I decided to head up to the mountain for a solo backpack trip. I've only done one before with my sister's dog and this would be my first completely by myself. I stopped at the Zig Zag Ranger Station and decided on Twin Lakes since it's a winter trail with appropriate markers (blue diamonds) so my chances of getting...

February 3, 2013 JM 3.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Winter time snow shoe up to Boy Scout Ridge in the White River drainage. We joined lots of people playing in the snow by hiking up the river drainage to where the Timberline Trail crosses the river. We joined another group and hiked directly up the steepest side of the ridge (nearly vertical) using our snowshoes as crampons. We had lunch at the top and decid...

February 3, 2013 eric 5 miles 1,500 feet gained

A nice hike for gear testing after the REI used gear sale.

February 3, 2013 Jen 4.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Stayed overnight at the Mazama Lodge. Climbed up toTimberline lodge for a hearty lunch. Hitched a ride back down the hill with some Chemeketans!

February 2, 2013 Allison 8 miles 1,250 feet gained

Sunny, warm February day with snow the consistency of mashed potatoes.

February 2, 2013 Karl 11.6 miles 3,500 feet gained

Another beautiful February day in the gorge. The lower flanks of Hamilton were bare, the sky was blue, but there was a very strong wind blowing from the east. The summit had a couple feet of snow, but the saddle was also bare. I made the fateful decision to wander the jeep trails north of the saddle, and ran into far more snow than I really had wanted to dea...

February 2, 2013 B-Dog 9 miles 1,250 feet gained

Went to Check out the North Face of Mount Kent on Saturday. Looks like an amazing area and worthy of a summit push in the coming weeks. Snow conditions varied... with some areas being extremely slow on the approach. We almost reached the base of the climb after 4 hours of breaking trail. There wasn't enough daylight to make a summit bid. Going to try and hea...

February 2, 2013 The Angry Hiker 6 miles 1,250 feet gained

Named for the sound of trees rubbing together in the wind, The Farting Owl is one of I-90's lesser known hiking destinations. My plan was to ascend Change Peak to the East, but I had to turn around about a mile or so after the Farting Owl when the snow became too deep to hike any further.

February 2, 2013 Chris 10 miles 4,000 feet gained

A nice sunny day on the mountain. The snow was pretty firm from the use up to Tilly Jane, mush from Tilly to the shelter, and then solid ice past the shelter. Took a few wrong turns on the way up and down, but they ended up being helpful because they put me in an icy river basin that was easy to climb up on. Went up to about the 7200' mark—a sheet of ice, no...

February 2, 2013 Bosterson 26 miles 5,500 feet gained

Up RR, snowshoed across Benson and out to Chinidere, then down to Wahtum and down Eagle Creek. Slushy most everywhere. Snow on EC trail below E-T jct, surprisingly low elevation. Some ice, but everything is melting out fast. 13 hrs, dark to dark.

February 2, 2013 Roman 5 miles 750 feet gained

Old trail/road loop, with a bit of newly reopened area to the east. Forgot the camera today, but view from that east viewpoint is pretty nice - the three volcanoes, Defiance, and a bit of the river.

February 2, 2013 Nat Turner 8.6 miles 2,250 feet gained

Parking lot full @ Noon. Waited 15 mins for a spot. After that all good, most peeps stopped at the falls, or the lower cliff viewpoints, after the summit I saw only three people. The only snow is a Slushy Mowhawk about 3 feet deep across the top ridge. @ 2200'

January 30, 2013 Scott 8 miles 1,000 feet gained

I was short on time, but decided to I would head to Hoyt Arboretum and make the most of the little time that I did have.

January 27, 2013 JM 5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Snowshoe up Newton Creek from Mt. Hood Meadows to Elk Meadows trail. The trail up the hill was faint, and mostly it was cross country to the meadows. We were some of the first footprints in the meadows, two other people arrived after we did. Shelter was mostly buried.

January 27, 2013 JM 5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Mid winter snowshoe up to and around Mirror Lake. Walked along Hwy 26 for 1 mile from Ski Bowl. Great day, continually snowing. About 3-6 inches of snow on the ground at the trailhead, more as we climbed up to the frozen over lake.

January 26, 2013 The Angry Hiker 8 miles 3,300 feet gained

This puppy seemed a little longer and steeper than usual. Maybe I'm getting old.

January 26, 2013 Chris 8 miles 2,500 feet gained

Headed up the PCT towards Table. Again, foul weather so turned around near the Heartbreak Ridge turnoff and went down toward the powerline road to make a small loop

January 25 to January 26, 2013 Anthony Weston 5 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

It was a spur of the moment trip, I called my friend David and he joined we got to the parking lot at sundown and hiked up to the top under a full moon following the ski tracks in the snow then came back down and camped. I brought two quilts that I wanted to test, it got down to about 22 degrees, the sawatch quilt was almost too warm and I threw it open arou...

January 25, 2013 B-Dog 9 miles 3,000 feet gained

New Summit - 1 of 20 for the Year 2013 Had the whole Mountain to myself. It was an epic day with every kind of weather and snow condition you could imagine. Low snow pack in the valley and deep powder on the summit.

January 24, 2013 Jen 6 miles 250 feet gained

Quiet Loop on a cold day
