I was getting a little tired of the ever-present wetness, so I headed east to escape it. Swale Canyon's converted rail-to-trail offering was the perfect antidote. It was like hiking in summer again, only with long johns on! The creek was still covered in a thin sheet of ice, and the wind was a constant 20-30mph producing a well-below freezing chill in the ai...

I had higher elevation plans today up the Clackamas, but there was fresh snow on all the access roads. It got too sketchy for the mommymobile at 2600 ft so I turned around and decided to go visit this old lookout site up the N Fork Road. A lovely few hours of wandering in the quiet woods. I found and reported an illegal hunters tree stand.

My cousin Marty came to visit us in Colorado, and the weather was semi-clear, but cold and windy, so our enjoyable options were limited. So, we took Tenderfoot trail for a hike just behind the foothills, which provided a bit of a view of Indian peaks, but it wasn't the clearest day. Then, we climbed on and explored the Red Rocks of Boulder.

This hike is a little treasure. This time was a recon trip (to drive & see new terrain), next time I'd plan time to actually hike all the loop trail, and also see the "Island" nearby.

Snowshoe around Trillium lake. We left from the sno-park, hiked down the road and out to the Summit Meadow and past the "grave", yet didn't find it. We snowshoed across the frozen lake(!) and had lunch on the far shore before heading back to the sno-park, passing throngs of people on their way out to the lake. Glad we got there early.

Went cross country skiing. Planned to take Deer Creek Road up to Lake Kelcema but the day was wet and the trek up was icy in spots making for a less than ideal day. At the trail head for the lake decided to turn around as the rain kept coming and we were getting a bit uncomfortable.

March 16, 2013 The Angry Hiker 7 miles 1,000 feet gained

The plan was to do Rattlesnake, Ceder Butt and then hike up the Iron Horse to the Farting Owl, but the drizzle turned into a downpour with high winds. I turned back a couple miles short of the trailhead to the Owl.

March 16, 2013 The Angry Hiker 4.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Rough weather in the Pass kept me down in the dumpsters today. Ran up to the 3rd ledge on Rattlesnake and then headed for Ceder Butt (again).

March 15, 2013 JM 7.5 miles 2,250 feet gained

First Trip up Munra Point. Started out at the Wahclelah Falls Trail head, headed West on the 400 Trail and then headed up the hill on an unmaintained trail. Starts out easy enough, but comes to some tight switchbacks with roots and rocks to navigate. Then up steeper still over rocky outcrops to a vertical slot w/ a rope to climb up. Continue to the top and y...

Since it's almost all outdoors I think it qualifies as a hike. Plus, lots of wildlife...

March 15 to March 16, 2013 Chris 8 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

Another quick overnighter, this time to Siouxon Creek. 1hr 20 min from door to trailhead. Got the green light from weekend_warrior that the road hump was snow free. As always, this one's a winner—without a doubt the best creek hike in the area. Got in around 3p, hiked about 4 miles out to the slick waterfall before the bridge to Chinook falls. That thing is ...

March 13 to March 14, 2013 JM 6.5 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

Snowshoe to a ski hut off the Barlow Road area above the White River drainage. Followed the PCT, Mineral jane trail and then a FS road to the shipping container turned into a hut with propane heat and lights. Made a great dinner, drank some beers and played games while it snowed about 8 inches. Awoke to alot of fresh snow and on the hike back, we made a long...

March 10, 2013 isaac 7.5 miles 2,000 feet gained

Hiked up to the lookout tower on Frozenhead peak.

March 10, 2013 The Angry Hiker 10 miles 4,000 feet gained

Made it to the summit in short order and decided to explore some of the side trails. Found a connector trail to Teneriffe and hiked along the ridge a bit before turning around.

March 10, 2013 Bosterson 11.5 miles 5,000 feet gained

Really wet, heavy, slushy new snow on top of hard consolidated snow and ice. Cold, wet, and windy up top - pretty miserable. Unbelievable amount of Mazama flagging on the Defiance trail below its junction w/ the Warren Lake trail. Winter conditions = 6 hrs.

March 9, 2013 Nat Turner 4 miles 1,500 feet gained

I Saw 4 Dirt bikes on the summit. Not pedal bikes. 250cc trail bikes. Bold. Exposed. Illegal. Hit the lower viewpoint twice, a bit of Wygant, then jumped the fence to hover over 84.

March 8, 2013 The Angry Hiker 3 miles 1,000 feet gained

Cedar Butte, or "Ceder Butt" as it's spelled on the geological marker, is the most boring hike in Washington State. Avoid it like the plague.

March 8, 2013 Karl 14 miles 3,500 feet gained

Picked an ideal day to head up to the Hummocks area, at the end of SR-504, and do a little exploring. We started up South Coldwater Ridge, with zero fear of running into the whiteout that hit our last attempt a month ago. Ended up lunching at the intersection of Coldwater Peak Trail and Boundary Trail, in a beautiful little saddle overlooking Saint Helens La...

March 8 to March 9, 2013 Chris 8 miles 750 feet gained 1 night

I wanted to take advantage of the great weather this weekend, so I made a quick Friday afternoon trip out to Opal Creek. Camped a few hundred feet from Opal Pool in a small melted out spot. Saw no one else in the evening. The wood was so damp I could not get a fire started—even with a little cheating. Fantastic weather.

March 8, 2013 Chris 2 miles 250 feet gained

A quick pre-trip hike to Henline Falls. This would make a really nice summer swimming hole—but it's probably really crowded on weekends. Also, the Silver King mine is gated only a few dozen feet in now.

March 8, 2013 Jen 8.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Gorgeous day for a hike up Table. Snow starts just after the Heartbreak Ridge viewpoint area next to the Two Chiefs. The snow actually makes it easier to climb the boulder field. Fresh thick stuff from this week and very few tracks up top.

March 7 to March 8, 2013 Scott 4 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

I took a road trip down to New Mexico to visit a really good friend. We managed to knock out 6 states (Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico) in just under 30 hours with pit-stops. We had planned to take it a bit slower and enjoy some sites along the way, but the weather closed on us much quicker than anticipated. Fortunately, we were able to...

March 4, 2013 Chris 10 miles 3,250 feet gained

Some wandering along the PCT. Was going to go up Table the back way but the amount of snow and 2p start made me decide to call it at 10 miles.

March 4, 2013 B-Dog 9 miles 4,000 feet gained

New Summit - 3 of 20 for the Year 2013 What a great way to top off a perfect birthday weekend. The forecast for Monday was mostly sunny and I had a day off from work.... Now what was I to do ? Ahh... Mount Kent !! After my recon mission from a few weeks ago, I knew that the approach was dialed in. Now I just needed to find the Couloir and get up to the summi...
