December 6, 2014 Stacey Multnomah Falls 10 miles 2,250 feet gained

Hiked up to the Nesika Lodge via the Ornament Trail for some early December holiday cheer. An ice storm had hit Multnomah Basin fairly recently, so the trees were heavily laden with ice.

December 6, 2014 JM Robins Island 8 miles 1,750 feet gained

Lots of crazy ice, rain and cold temps conspired to keep us from reaching much beyond the Tanner Butte TH. Hiked Rd 777, 400, Wahclella Falls Trail & back.

December 6, 2014 Mileage Mike Mill Pond 3.9 miles 500 feet gained

Went on a family hike for my son's birthday. This is actually a very nice area, and the two waterfalls we saw were phenomenal! Pothole falls reminded me of a smaller Lewis River Lower Falls! There are many short hiking trails in the park and we bumped into a gentleman that mentioned that there are many more trails which aren't documented.

December 6, 2014 Karl Pct: Mt Hood 12 miles 3,500 feet gained

Thought we'd take the PCT up from Herman Creek to the Benson Plateau. Mostly just to continue working off Thanksgiving. From about 1500' up, the remains of a previous day's freezing rain were quite evident. Snow was thickening up around 3000', and it looked like a solid cloud layer above. So we decided at that point to just go back down and follow the PCT a ...

December 6, 2014 Pablo Nesmith Point 5 miles 2,500 feet gained

Did a loop on Nesmith Ridge and Nesmith Pt Trail. Icy in places.

December 3, 2014 Jim Hardy Falls 7.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

First trip to Hardy Ridge, first post on Went Hiking. Cold and windy though surprisingly, the wind was worse coming down the east side than it was at the summit. I've done Hamilton on snowshoes before but otherwise have no experience on these trails. The frost heave in the road beds was as much as 4 inches deep making for some rough going at times -- similar...

December 2, 2014 Woodswalker Herman Bridge 8 miles 1,500 feet gained

The weather report was calling for sleety mix and high winds in the gorge, but it was high thin clouds all day with some sunshine. I followed the Herman Creek trail to just past Casey Creek. The wind was calm once I got away from the trailhead. A thin sprinkle of snow and ice dusted the trail. But not slippery at all. Great day out.

December 1, 2014 B-Dog Crystal Mountain 2 miles 2,000 feet gained

Skinned up Crystal on Sunday under bluebird skies. Conditions were great up high, but still really thin down low. Was thankful to be off the couch and getting my 1st turns of the season in !!!

November 30, 2014 Roman Ferry Springs 8.5 miles 500 feet gained

Clear & cold day, it barely got above freezing. Lots of birds, saw what we think bighorn sheep droppings. Hardly any people all day, I never seen this place so deserted.

November 30, 2014 Woodswalker Sherrard Point 9.1 miles 1,500 feet gained

Great snow day. parked a ways down from the gate and walked up the road. Then cut over to the Larch Mountain trail to the top. Snow and ice starting at about the 8 miles on the road. Powdery snow once we got off the road.

November 30, 2014 Pablo Broughton Bluff 3.5 miles 500 feet gained

Did the scramble to the top of Broughton Bluffs up from Lewis & Clark Park that's next door to Troutdale - more challenging than you might think and nice views once there. Followed this by an exploration of the new multi-use path constructed along the Sandy and a look at the underside of the new bridge - room for countless transient camps and underage drinki...

November 30, 2014 Mileage Mike Sherrard Point 8.6 miles 1,000 feet gained

We love this area and decided to try a hike in spite of the high winds. The last several miles on Larch Mt. Rd. were icy, but the Subaru didn't have any problems at low speeds. The temperature was parked at about 24 degrees F for the day, but we added an extra layer and had no warmth issues. We also wore our Kahtoola micro-spikes as the ground was frozen and...

November 29, 2014 acorn woodpecker Powell Butte 2.5 miles 250 feet gained

Quick afternoon trip with the family. Tried out the new stroller on the trails. Worked great. Even negotiates stairs! Did a little lollipop loop to the summit from the 147th Ave TH. Nice views, cold weather.

November 29, 2014 Pablo Angels Rest 7 miles 2,000 feet gained

Hiked up Palmer Mill Rd to the trail that traverses the plateau to return via Angels Rest. Got snowed on. Saw an owl perched in a tree. Views from Angels Rest were good.

November 29, 2014 Mileage Mike Mission Lake 8.5 miles 750 feet gained

We've never been to this state park before and wanted to check it out. It turns out that there is a tremendous amount of flooding in this area during the heavy rain seasons, and so the main road into the park was closed to the main parking area for high water. This park is also undergoing a large amount of restoration to return it to its natural state. All t...

November 28, 2014 Stacey Opal Creek 10 miles 500 feet gained

Another Visit to Opal Creek. Half Bridges are almost complete. Water was running high and swift. Cedar Flat was not accessible due to high water flow at the crossing next to the waterfall shortly before Cedar Flats. Kopetski Trail, between Opal Pool and the road junction was flooded in several areas.

November 28, 2014 Bosterson Horsetail Creek 5.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

Cold, blustery, wet day. Went up the RJ to the shelter, up Mindolovich to ROA,down to Mt. Kiesano and back down to the car. A better day for staying in bed than for hiking!

November 28, 2014 Mileage Mike Alder Bluff 8.9 miles 750 feet gained

It was a very wet day today and we both found out our boots have a leak in them! We only saw a pair of hunters as they returned to the TH, otherwise, there was nobody on the trail system today. There are so many trails here that we actually got disoriented and had to use the gps to get back to the return trail, and it was actually kind of fun.

November 27, 2014 Roman Upper Falls 7 miles 500 feet gained

Finally took my grandmother to see Lewis River - she always came to visit us in winter, when this trail was closed by snow. The falls were roaring, sheer walls of water; at Upper Falls viewpoint the ground was literally shaking under our feet.

November 27, 2014 Mileage Mike Government Cove 9.1 miles 2,000 feet gained

We enjoy going out on Holidays as the trail system is seldom crowded, wand only one person was seen on the trail. Warm day but it cooled down as we hiked out toward Camp Creek. It rained lightly for a short while, but was mostly just cloudy. This trail is always a pleasure and Herman Creek is spectacular!

November 26, 2014 Team Reynolds Cape Horn 7.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

We started in the middle this time. Not many people out today... that's why we went.

November 24, 2014 Jen Thoroughbred 6 miles 750 feet gained

Had a great wander in the snow. No boot tracks, just lots of critter prints. Left my new trail cam up there.

November 23, 2014 Chris Tangle Blue Lake 11.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

There's still no snow on Scott Mountain so this Sunday afternoon trip was a go. Tangle Blue Lake sees more foot and horse traffic in season but there was not a soul out there with the light dusting of snow and mid 30's temps. The sun showed it's face a few times! We decided a good summer trip would be to stage a car at middle boulder and bear lakes trailhead...

November 23, 2014 Mileage Mike Tollgate Campground & Day Use Area 9.1 miles 750 feet gained

We wanted an easy hike as our feet have been hurting. This was a very nice hike, and although the weather was nice at the start, it was raining fairly heavily and unrelenting throughout most of the hike. This is a great trail that is fairly level, and we managed to get some great views of the Zigzag River and Still Creek. The trail was basically a stream dur...

November 22, 2014 Mileage Mike Look Lake 8.7 miles 1,500 feet gained

The day started out nice and then a hard rain came down for a while. Nice dusting of snow above 1000-1200ft, but typically in the shadowed areas! Beautiful day for a hike on the east side of the Cascades.

November 22, 2014 Karl Ramona Falls 9 miles 1,250 feet gained

Solitude at Ramona Falls. Impossible? Not if you go on a 30-something degree day with unrelenting "wintry mix" falling from above. It was that sort of day. We may have spent a total of 5 minutes at the falls. Just enough to take "we were here" photos, and change gloves. The forest was beautiful as ever, though the Sandy crossing isn't amateur hour at half-ra...

November 21, 2014 acorn woodpecker Powell Butte 4 miles 500 feet gained

Took my son out on a rainy day and did a clockwise loop and two lollipop loops around the park. Started at 148th TH, but the construction of the subterranean reservoir halted my clean loop. Instead, we walked the perimeter fence of the construction area to find a way through (there was none), and looped back via deer trails through pleasant doug fir and west...

November 21, 2014 Jen Oneonta Falls 4 miles 500 feet gained

First time hiking with an umbrella. Got it secured hands free. Raining hard, dry girl!

November 16, 2014 Stacey Opal Creek 6.5 miles 250 feet gained

Easy hike to enjoy the first snowfall. Anywhere from 0" - 4" snow and ice on the road, but easily walked without traction. Half bridge are currently being repaired and should be reopened by mid-December. The far side of Jawbone Flats is accessible by a footbridge a short distance downstream from the old bridge.

November 16, 2014 Mileage Mike Punchbowl 7.8 miles 1,250 feet gained

Finally, a nice leisurely hike with NO wind. Plenty of debris all over the forest floor. Only saw one person on horseback, but otherwise we had this beautiful place to ourselves! Temperatures in the low to mid-30's, and it felt refreshing. Had to get back home early for family, so cut the hike a bit short.

November 16, 2014 Karl Hamilton Mountain 8.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

It was a bitterly cold morning in the Gorge, but SR-14 was in pretty good shape. We got to BRSP before 9am to find two cars already in the lot; one of them already sporting a ticket for improperly displayed Discover Pass. Ground was frozen hard, and the restrooms were bolted shut. The climb up Hamilton was mostly on snow and ice. She put on YakTrax in the pa...

November 16, 2014 Woodswalker Balch Canyon 8.2 miles 750 feet gained

Doing recovery hikes still. Great wind free clear hike today. Mostly fine. Some black ice along Balch creek in spots. Sadly someone slipped and it seemed like they had a broken leg. Fire truck and ambulance crews had to take him out on a stretcher. No easy task going downhill with a stretcher on ice.

November 15, 2014 Chris Upper Seven Lake 7 miles 1,250 feet gained

Fantastic weather with a very nice ridge walk and hit-and-miss views of Shasta. Some guys in 4x4s were trying to make it down to the lakes on the very rough 4x4 roads, which was pretty entertaining to watch.
