December 27, 2014 Bosterson Lookout Mountain 9 miles 3,000 feet gained

Started down at the highway. Temps hovering a little above freezing. Hit snow before Gumjuwac Saddle. Eventually lost any semblance of a trail and headed OT up the slopes through the snow. Temps dropped to around 28º. Wind and fresh snow falling on the top, so we bailed on continuing to Flag Pt and headed back down. Snow turned into slushy rain back down nea...

December 27, 2014 Mileage Mike Cunningham Lake 6.8 miles 500 feet gained

This is the last family hike of the year and it was a rainy but pleasant day at Sauvie Island. The first half the trail was fairly muddy but we had no problems walking around the large puddle. The second half of the trail was great with no standing water or mud! We only saw one couple the entire way out to the lighthouse, but on the return hike there were qu...

December 26, 2014 acorn woodpecker Nick Eaton 16 miles 5,000 feet gained

Dead camera battery=no photos. Started from Herman Creek TH and went up the Herman Creek Trail 3 or so miles until I reached the southern ridge of Camp Creek (first substantial creek crossing after the wilderness sign). I ascended this ridge for 3000 ft to Nick Eaton Ridge just north of the Casey Creek trail junction. The lower half had alternating bands of ...

December 26, 2014 Karl Plateau Cutoff 17 miles 4,750 feet gained

Awesome loop into a Winter Wonderland. Started at the Wyeth Campground, and took the 411 up towards North Lake, with the thought of possibly tagging Defiance. On the way, we hit snow around 3250', and it deepened to 3-4" by 4000'. Plus, rather than climb through the clouds, they just seemed to thicken all but eliminating the prospect of decent views. So we d...

December 26, 2014 Mileage Mike Big Hollow Creek 7.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

The Paradise Trail is not well known or traveled, from what we can tell. Typically, this time of year, Dry Creek Rd. is gated and this becomes a road hike. Fortunately, the gate was open, and we believe this was because there is a firewood cutting area on NF-201, and also there was no snow or frost. My wife didn't feel too comfortable driving up NF-201 (alth...

December 26, 2014 JM Wyeth Campground 17 miles 4,750 feet gained

(photos by Karl) What a hike! Wyeth is a real workout. Unending switchbacks up into the snow, but once on the plateau, it made for great hiking. I wish we had more daylight to explore up in this white world, but the impending eve bids you to return to the green and fog before night's arrival. Also, my knee was killing me.

December 25, 2014 Stacey North Grove 4 miles 250 feet gained

Short 4 mile trail run through the sequoias on Christmas Day.

December 25, 2014 Mileage Mike Crampton Reservoir 5.3 miles 750 feet gained

My son and I went for a short hike before family came over this evening. This is a very nice area with plenty of views of the Sandy River. The trail also had several small waterfalls located on it that were very nice! There were some people scattered throughout the park but nobody was on the trail.

December 25, 2014 Pablo Devils Rest 9.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

Road walked Palmer Mill to one of the back ways into Devils Rest, then descended on the Primrose Trail for the loop. I've never seen the Primrose Trail in such good shape - thx to those folks who brought this back.

December 25, 2014 Roman Coldwater Lake 7.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

We were going to do a loop around the lake, but with late arrival (took time driving over icy hill, luckily it mostly melted out by the time we headed back) and our start @ Coldwater Visitor Center we didn't want to push it. Hiked along the lake past the big washout area, had great views of Minnie Peak and (I think) Mt. Whittier. There was little snow on lak...

December 24, 2014 Mileage Mike Baker Creek 7.2 miles 750 feet gained

We decided to stay in WA to avoid any pre-holiday traffic after finishing our hike. We decided to try Lewis and Clark State Park as I read there is more than 10+ miles of hiking/equestrian trails. We found the trails located east of Jackson Hwy to be muddy with a large amount of blown down trees! The trails west of Jackson Hwy were in much better condition a...

December 23, 2014 Mileage Mike Mima Prairie 8.3 miles 1,000 feet gained

It was a beautiful cloudy and drizzly day in Capitol State Forest. Since this area is about 100 miles north of Vancouver we don't go here very often. We took the Mima Falls East trail and looped around using the Campground trail back to the Mima Falls Campground. There was plenty of mud and water on the trail but it really wasn't a big deal. The mood was als...

December 23, 2014 Jim Pcnst 6 miles 1,250 feet gained

Initial plan was to hike to 3 Corner Rock then make a loop of sorts using some of the old logging roads. Instead I headed N on the PCT until I reached Snag Creek which was too flooded to cross. Turning around, I headed S on the PCT past the starting point until I reached FS 2090. It was raining steadily and too foggy for any views so I made the decision to r...

December 21, 2014 Roman Packard Creek 3.5 miles 250 feet gained

This park has been transformed in the past year, they laid gravel on almost all trails - very few muddy places left. New signs and maps, new bridges, etc...

December 21, 2014 Mileage Mike Moody Island 8.5 miles 500 feet gained

This is one our favorite trails, and for this reason we made this long drive to breakthrough the 6000 mile barrier toward our lifetime goal of 25000 miles! It was a cloudy day with some light drizzle throughout the day, and the wind was fairly tame. The Deschutes River was quite high and most of the rocks in the rapids areas were covered. We probably saw abo...

December 20, 2014 Mileage Mike Mill Pond 4.9 miles 750 feet gained

A nice little family hike in the pouring rain. There were a few people on the trail, but the trails were mostly devoid hikers. Plenty of water running over all the falls but the trails weren't muddy. We visited Woodburn Falls for the first time, and it was spectacular!

December 19, 2014 acorn woodpecker Angels Rest 5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Had a few hours in the afternoon and took my son up to Angels Rest. Hadn't been there in a few years. Nice day and friendly folks on the (justifiably) busy trail!

December 19, 2014 Jen 5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Beautiful day, but I had to stop, hip hurty. Had a great lunch with a spectacular view.

December 19, 2014 Jim Cape Horn 3 miles 750 feet gained

Threw 50# of sand in the pack and went for a short but punishing hike up to the cliffs. Beautiful day for a workout.

December 18, 2014 Jim Pyramid Rock 6 miles 2,000 feet gained

Took a quick up and back to Silver Star. I decided to take the old jeep trail on the east side of Pyramid rock on the way up to make a partial loop. It turned out to be a bad day to bet against the weather report as the top was not only socked in by fog but there was freezing rain and sleet coming down as well.

December 14, 2014 Roman Birth Of A Lake 8 miles 1,000 feet gained

Wanted to go from Hummocks to JRO but stopped about 2 miles short because of high wind (not a good time to go near drop-offs). Still a great day, we hiked back and around the Hummocks, and visited Coldwater Lake.

December 14, 2014 JM Ridge Cut-Off 8 miles 3,250 feet gained

Not too nice of a day up at Indian Point. It was quite amazing to see the wind in the gorge making Mist Falls flow UP on the drive out. Gorton Creek side of the loop was socked in and quite windy in places and cold. These same winds were pushing the fog in the gorge from the East (normally the other way around) and when you stood on the ridgetop, you would s...

December 14, 2014 Mileage Mike Devil Canyon 10.7 miles 750 feet gained

We just wanted to hike the Still Creek Trail and loop back onto the Wind Mt. trail after wrapping around along Still Creek Road, but the bridge over Still Creek was closed! We ended up walking the road and connecting to the Pioneer Bridle trail after walking much further up the road. Luckily, we met a very nice woman (and her dog) that escorted us on a short...

December 14, 2014 Woodswalker Coopey Falls 7 miles 1,750 feet gained

Clear skies, lots of wind, lots of friendly hikers. After reaching Angels rest, I continued east on the trail towards Wahkeena, Headed south east on the Foxglove trail and looped around back to the Angels rest trail. I didn't go much further east because the temperature was dropping so I headed back down. Caroling hikers and many happy dogs with their humans...

December 13, 2014 Stacey Multnomah Falls 10 miles 2,750 feet gained

I'm lazy, so check out Karl's trip report. http://wenthiking.com/users/295-karl/hikes/4417-elevator-shaft-ornament-loop

December 13, 2014 Bosterson Coldwater Peak 12.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Winter attempt. Went up the SE face to the headwall, skirted around the right side and found a little series of steps along a ledge. Managed to get up onto the trail right below the summit, but sketchiness for other members of the group and diminishing visibility with fresh snow falling led us to back off and lunch in a lee area along the headwall. Shop's b-...

December 13, 2014 Karl Wiesendanger Falls 10 miles 2,750 feet gained

Fun time climbing up Elevator Shaft to wander around Multnomah Basin. Great detour halfway up to look out over the viewpoint just beyond Meadow Ridge. Still can't figure out the approach to there from Multnomah Creek. The ornament trail sure has exploded in popularity since I was last up there two years ago! Only saw one other human up top, lots more coming ...

December 13, 2014 Father Guido Sarducci Point Defiance 5.29 miles 1,000 feet gained

Adopted a rescue dog a couple of weeks ago & am in the process of training her as a hiking partner. After some leash time on the trails we hike over to the dog park for some socializing.

December 12 to December 13, 2014 Kyle Meyer Little Niagara Falls 9 miles 1,750 feet gained 1 night

Another overnight soul restoration. Goat Creek is extremely unremarkable, even a downright ugly campsite, but it's tough to beat the beautiful hike in and the lack of others that would stupidly sleep in the rain in December out here.

December 12, 2014 Jen Augspurger Mountain 11 miles 2,000 feet gained

Started up Berge Road on my bike, but it was a bit too muddy and steep and I had some technical difficulties, so I threw the bike in the bushes and hiked the rest.Lots of interesting little side roads to explore. I have an idea for a loop next time. Really nice big scree fields on the northern end of Aug. Pikas still out.

December 7, 2014 Roman Angels Rest 4.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

The wind was not bad, until we reached the top... up there, it was like in the Jet Engine Test Lab busy at work (and sounded just the same). It was warm enough that wind chill was not an issue. Great views as always.

December 7, 2014 JM Lower Siouxon 8.3 miles 750 feet gained

Easy out and back dayhike on a gray day. Only saw 10 people all day, and no one until on the way back from Chinook Falls. The bridge is still in, but you can tell it's rotting quickly. Slippery crossing just before the closed bridge was flowing really good, not very easy to avoid getting wet.

December 7, 2014 Bosterson Table Mountain 7 miles 2,750 feet gained

Attempt on Table, ice on the trail started halfway up the Heartbreak Ridge cutoff, and turned into full on ice chunks on the ridge. Windy!! We bailed from the saddle OT SW down the slope and intersected the PCT, then continued up to the 2nd kiosk and turned left onto the Cedar Mountain trail. We crossed Cedar Creek and then went south around Aldrige Butte to...

December 7, 2014 Pablo Hamilton Mountain 3.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Explored the moss covered slopes south of the cliffs of Hamilton Mtn. Part of an east-side route to the summit?

December 7, 2014 Mileage Mike Step Creek 7.6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Beautiful day hiking on the Gales Creek Trail out of Reehers Camp. We ended up veering onto the Step Creek Trail, which wasn't completed the last time we hiked it, but it is now! The big treat for the day was that we crossed over a small stream, which runs into the Nehalem River, and there were over a dozen Salmon we observead heading up stream to spawn!!! I...
