January 6, 2015 Jim Cabin 7.1 miles 1,750 feet gained

Headed off to McClellan Meadows for a day of bushwacking on snowshoes. It was not meant to be. There wasn't enough snow for snowshoeing and that was covered in ice. Hiking was out of the question. Since I had no plan "B", I pulled out the maps and decided to head into Trapper Creek. It seems like this area is always on my radar but ends up taking a back seat...

January 5, 2015 Jim Hamilton Mountain 8 miles 2,500 feet gained

Hiked the loop using the cut-off trail. Visibility was touch and go. No view at all from Hamilton Mtn. Other than wet, trail conditions were good.

January 4, 2015 Mileage Mike Green Canyon Way 8.1 miles 1,250 feet gained

Very rainy day but it was a wonderful Hike. The Salmon River Trail is one of our favorites! One trail runner on the trail on the way out but two couples and a trail runner on the way back. Plenty of icy patches on the trail and we decided to wear the Kahtoola's, which worded out well, although on the way back the ice was melting out. Water levels were low an...

January 3, 2015 Rhonda Sherrard Point 16 miles 4,250 feet gained

Hiked into Sherrard Point via Multnomah Falls. Was a great day dodging falling snow and ice from trees as we slowly made our way to the top. Great times! Snow did slow us way down and the hike took us a bit longer than expected.

January 3, 2015 Karl Table Mountain 14 miles 3,750 feet gained

Decided that a long forest hike was the choice-du-jour, due what looked to be unrelenting clouds obscuring any hope of views. Wandered way up Hamilton Creek, starting just south of Aldrich Butte, following the old abandoned railroad grade to the extent possible. Then, took the incline route up to the PCT, and came back down the "normal" route. Along the way,...

January 3, 2015 Mileage Mike Eagle Creek Campground 8.6 miles 2,250 feet gained

We rolled into the Eagle Creek parking lot and as expected there were many people arriving and hiking up the trail. We headed east on the Gorge #400 trail and then headed up the Ruckle Creek Trail. I'd never been there before and was soaking wet after only 0.6 miles. My wife and I decided to head back onto the #400 trail and perhaps save it for a nicer day. ...

January 3, 2015 Bosterson Angels Rest 9.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

Angel's Rest TH > Coopey Creek Ridge > a hidden cabin > forest and abandoned road meandering > Devil's Rest > back to TH. Encountered approximately 75 people between Angel's Rest and the TH.

January 2, 2015 Woodswalker Summit Meadows 5 miles 500 feet gained

There was several inches of snow, hard packed could easily be hiked with micro spikes or without traction. However the snow was melting while we were there. snow level was a couple hundred feet higher. Great day!

January 2, 2015 Mileage Mike Big Noise Creek 9.2 miles 1,250 feet gained

Great Hike at Gnat Creek! We hiked the entire trail with some additional trails and bushwacking. Streams on the trail were flowing but very low. A section of the trail was frozen solid but didn't require any traction devices. Absolutely no people on the trail!

January 1, 2015 Mountainkat Mount Walker 5.6 miles 2,000 feet gained

We spent the new year holiday on the Olympic Peninsula. I hiked Mt. Walker on new year's day. There were many people on the trail that day.

January 1, 2015 Bosterson Illumination Rock 5.5 miles 3,500 feet gained

Got an early start and left Timberline at 6:30am. Watched the sunrise as we climbed the ski runs. At the top of the Palmer, skiers reported impassibly deep powder on the Hogsback, so any thought of going up was abandoned, and instead we walked over to Illumination Saddle for lunch. So sunny and warm, it was like spring.

January 1, 2015 Jim Aldrich Butte 3.6 miles 1,250 feet gained

Well, I intended the first hike of the new year to be something more spectacular but last minute plan changes and a shortage of daylight resulted in a quick burst up Aldrich Butte. I used the trail that winds along Cedar Creek on the way up then made a loop by coming down the road back past Carpenter Lake to the power line. The day was clear and cold with a ...

January 1, 2015 Megan Dog Mountain 7 miles 3,000 feet gained

New Year's Day 2015! Snowy at the top, but an absolutely beautiful bluebird day int the Gorge!

December 31, 2014 Pablo Hamilton Mountain 11 miles 3,250 feet gained

Hiked up Hamilton then north along old logging roads. Cut across Hardy Creek then up the ridge to catch another road that lead to Phlox Pt and the return to the trail head. It was windy and cold but clear making for some great looks around the Gorge and beyond.

December 30, 2014 Karl Devils Rest 5.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

(Actually hiked on Dec 31, but I found the stats on the Home page aren't updated with hikes on that date for some reason!) It was too nice a day not to get out, so midday I decided to go looking for frozen waterfalls in the gorge. Ended up just wandering up past Wahkeena and Fairy Falls, and on to Wahkeena Springs, before making a bit of a loop up top by hea...

December 30, 2014 Karl Paradise 9.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

Hit the goal of 800 miles for the year! Had a fun day in the snow with a good friend. Temps between 20-25°F all day, not much wind, light powdery snow up to a foot deep. Caught a few views, but not enough. Need to go back here in better conditions. :)

December 28, 2014 Jim Table Mountain 8 miles 3,250 feet gained

Second attempt to reach table mountain resulted in futility due to weather. This route started at the power lines (Aldrich Butte TH). It was cold and raining starting out but by the time I got to the steep, loose rock section of the west approach, the snow was coming down and the wind blowing hard. After losing the trail several times near the top, common se...

December 28, 2014 JM Collins Lake 4 miles 500 feet gained

Snowshoe around some of the "backroads" North of Gov't Camp. Easy and fun. Trying to get to 600 miles again this year, mission accomplished! Snow was coming down heavy, not many people, just a great day.

December 28, 2014 Roman Salmon Butte 9.64 miles 3,000 feet gained

Came to within 1/3 mile from the summit, there was a bit too much snow for Pepper to continue. It still was a great hike, we mostly escaped the rain, and had winter wonderland with little snow to deal with (until ~4200'). This trail is very well graded, and while there's few views, the forest is very nice. There's a ton of rhododendrons, I need to come back ...

December 28, 2014 Pablo Hamilton Mountain 7 miles 2,250 feet gained

Had bigger plans but all was socked in, try again later.

December 28, 2014 Mileage Mike Mud Spring Canyon 10.8 miles 500 feet gained

This was the last hike of my vacation and also the last for the year. The weather was fantastic with the sun coming out occasionally and with only a few sprinkles! It was a great year and we're hoping for a repeat (minus the knee and back issues) in 2015! We wish every one a happy and healthy new year in 2015!!!

December 28, 2014 Jen Multnomah Creek Way 6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Headed up from the gate on MP 10. A winter wonderland of wanderings.

December 27, 2014 Jim Aldrich Butte 4.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

This was my first trip to this network of trails. Starting at the Aldrich Butte TH, my goal was Table Mountain. I missed the trail turn off past Carpenter Lake and ended up exploring some trails in the Cedar Creek drainage. Not a total loss however. I found the connector to Cedar Mountain-Hamilton Creek Overlook loop which I intend to explore in the future.
