The trailhead had about 20 cars parked there when we arrived around noon on a Thursday. We suspected everyone was at Lake Ingalls. We opted for the quieter hike to Lake Ann and we had the whole trail to ourselves. Around Lake Ann, a few larch trees were still golden, but most had lost their needles.

Always a great hike with plenty of views! There were quite a few campers and boaters on the river and it appeared that at least one group must have been chartered. Very nice weather on the hike out but it turned windy on the way back with a bit of rain when we got close to the car.

Biked 7 miles to God's Valley, an old homestead now maintained by ODFW for winter elk grazing, and salmon habitat in the N Fork Nehalem river. Wandered the massive meadows and bushwacked in some mighty spruce forests. Found a few more mushrooms; chanterelles and lobsters.

I went looking for goats, and Goat Island Mountain didn't disappoint. The trail itself was partly an easy stroll through the woods, then a knee-killing hike up a dry creek, and finally a bushwhack onto a high ridge in the shadow of Mt. Rainier. Best of all, I had the whole mountain to myself. Just me and the goats, anyway.

We figured it would be safe hiking around the Government Camp trail system so we just wandered around the area. We parked near the Rest Area and just headed up to the Crosstown Trail and many others that are here. It's a very nice, and safe, area to explore and only mountain bikers and hikers were seen.

This was a re-do hike as previous attempt was marred by smoky conditions. No such issues on this hike. Expansive views of Rainier and surrounding peaks with occasional views of St. Helens and Adams. Road to the trail head has been regraded so the area where a high clearance vehicle was needed is no longer an issue.

Pretty quiet for a Sunday. Did a nice loop up from Frog lake sno-park, past Twin Lakes, and then up to Palmateer Point. You could see the fall colors very clearly on Barlow Butte. For the return I looped up to the PCT and came back down. I often think of the PCT as Hikers Highway! Not a lot of fall color, but the spots where there was color were outstanding.

It was my wife's birthday and she got to choose the hike for today, and you can't go wrong with the Herman Creek trail. Surprisingly, the parking area wasn't filled up but we saw plenty of hikers on the way back to the car. Herman Creek was quite low but it's always a perfect view from the bridge!
