Harleigh and I both needed to stretch after yesterday, and I thought he was especially deserving, so we joined a "hiking with dogs" group to wander around the frozen gorge this beautiful #OptOutside day! Both people and dogs made new friends. Pretty nice way to spend the morning. :-) [The sign said "Strawberry Island" - no idea why the map calls it "Hamilton...

A friend and I hiked this trail shortly after the lower elevation snowfall last week. Once past the Dog Mountain junction, the trail had just a bit of snow for most of the way, with several inches at the higher elevations. We continued past the summit down to the opening with views of St. Helens, Rainier, and Adams. We did not have enough time before sunset ...

My wife and I took a break from cleaning the house, for Thanksgiving, and headed out to Whipple Creek. It was nice to get out and get some fresh air!

I wanted to climb up some elevation in an effort to hike in the snow. Not many hikers on the trail, but then it was a weekday. Once I passed up Angels Rest there were NO hikers all the way to Devil's Rest! At about 2000 feet there was snow on the trail and the trees, and there were snow flurries all the way to Devil's Rest. No serious debris or landslides on...

Made the loop clockwise. I started late (watched sunset 5 miles in) and finished by moonlight. There was an inch or two of snow on the ridge SE of the lake - it was so bright I almost didn't use my flashlight! Could see all surrounding mountains and MSH was rising above Johnston Ridge like a white cloud. Very still and quiet, magic night...

A friend invited me to go to Mt St Helen's with her yesterday, so off we went. The road up was icy in spots but fine. Just enough snow to make it beautiful. We parked at the Hummocks and road walked to The south Coldwater lake TH. As usual, beautiful views everywhere. We continued up towards Coldwater Peak and went about a mile beyond the junction with the t...

Another great day on the trail in Trapper Creek Wilderness! We originally were going to make a loop of the Trapper Creek trail and Observation Peak trail but changed our minds. We ended up heading for Observation Peak with the knowledge we wouldn't make it since we got another late start. The winds during the drive in the Gorge were brutal, but there was min...

Hiked the trail to the top of the ridge - planned a bit longer hike but was slowed by new blowdowns. I can only guess how it looks further on the ridge where fallen trees weren't cleared in years - but for some reason I like it this way. A bit rough, a bit treacherous, that's the character of Hunchback.

We have done it! We have completed our first ever 20+mile hike this past Saturday and we did it on none other than Tanner Butte. Fitting huh? Karl planted the idea a few weeks back when we had a conversation about wanting to get our first twenty under our belt before the end of the year. We sat around and waited for the perfect weekend weather report and onc...

Awesome day with great trailfriends, old and new, visiting the gorge peak that's farthest from any trailhead. Two of whom bagged their first 20-miler! There really isn't a better trail to do it on, either. :-) Started early, in the frosty cold, and never really escaped that. Although, the summit itself was a balmy 40-ish degrees with no wind! Otherwise, low-...

We arrived at the Pioneer Bridle TH a bit late and knew we would have difficulty making it to Enid Lake. My real objective, though, was to hit snow and experience some of the white stuff! It was a sunny and brisk 36 degrees when we reached the TH but we were prepared for both the cold and wind. The wind was rather calm for all but the region near the old fen...

I am going to use this entry to log my training runs around Clark Lake. This park is just down the street from my house and offers a nice trail system around swamp lands as well as a local lake. It is a dog friendly park and provides a great chance for Mindy to get some exercise as well !!! I have figured out a complex loop that will provide 3.25 miles of hi...

Following a spectacular failure trying to get to Bell Creek, Nesmith Point sounded like a good and nearby leg-stretcher! Lots of blowdown here, too, most all below 2000'. Very cold on top, but not much snow. Just occasional patches 1/2" or so deep. Finished last couple miles under headlamp. Curse "standard" time!

The original plan was to do the Bell Creek loop, coming from Oneonta Creek. But the recent storm(s) have had their way with that trail! Repairs to last year's slide area held up well, but there were uncounted new log falls across the trail, or taking the trail out entirely with their rootballs. Nonetheless, getting to Triple Falls is still doable for the mil...

Goal of the day. See some snow. Had snow at the trail head. Well icy snow. strolled about a mile and half up and then headed back down. I first started at the Steigerwald Lake parking area off hwy 84. Unfortunately, the bridge over Gibbon Creek was damaged by the storm, and a fallen tree took out some of the wood boards. Went with a couple of friends I hadn't seen in awhile for a short hike. Masses of mushrooms, loads of green and even a few sunbreaks!! The downpour held off until we were back at the car. Still some visible snow on the surrounding hills. The Clackamas was pretty calm in places, but all the side creeks were muddy brown and flowing fast. Wonderful day.

Hopefully, this is the last weekend day we need to stay close to home. We're hoping to have some fun in the snow next weekend, if possible? I saw this park on google maps and looked up the hike on the Oregon Hikers Field Guide. I was quite surprised how nice the trail system is here and found myself exploring the region near the Willamette River. I wasn't feeling that great, so we went to see Tanner Creek and Wahclella Falls. We had not been on that trail in a very long time. Great day with a friend taking the back way into Bell creek from Larch mountain. Slow pace due to excessive mushroom gawking. Some truly astounding old growth. I decided to try out this park as I've heard good things about it! My start on a paved trail made me think that the whole park would be like this, but it wasn't! There are a large number of short trails and most of them are a dirt surface!
