Took a different approach, and hiked up past Burnt Lake along the Zigzag Mtn trail. Totally overgrown, with some serious blowdown, but worth it for a change of pace.

Amazing post 4th quiet hike. Left from JRO and wandered over to one of my favorite lakes, went a bit further to the Rock Arch. I decided to skip Coldwater Peak. Then I joined the afternoon crowds at Harry's Ridge. Flowers are still going strong. Still a few snow patches once you get near the Arch. Great day.

Spent the 4th of July with Mayumi doing some Jeeping and then a hike up to Mirror Lake. It was a great day out and we both really enjoyed spending the day together. Afterwards we swung by DruBru for some tasty beverages and filled a few growlers for the 4th of July Fireworks show back home !!!

July 3, 2017 Jen 3.5 miles 500 feet gained

Woodsy wanderings, with way too much bushwacking on this trip. Heavy vegetation, could not see under the continuous carpet of vanilla leaf. Having flashes of "how Jen dislocated her new hip" every time I tripped. Big logs still a big challenge. Can't wait to get my monkey back.

July 2, 2017 Jen 6.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

New L hip (#2) now in place. First hike 17 days post-op. I am now the double bionic woman. Hear me click!

July 2, 2017 Woodswalker 11.8 miles 3,000 feet gained

Wonderful flowers everywhere!! I'd say it can't get any better up there. Full range of flowers, all at peak bloom and lots of meadows with views. The road in, is full of potholes, but not really a problem if you go slow. We saw a bear on the road out. A young one. Met two new lovely trail friends and had wonderful company old and new.

July 1 to July 4, 2017 Roman 31.31 miles 7,750 feet gained 3 nights

Jumbo, Sunrise, Juniper Peak & back, from south trailhead mentioned on OH. Trails were rutted from motorcycles and brushy in parts (esp. part near Dark Mtn), but high points of the hike were spectacular. Saw many goats on Jumbo Peak. Still some snow around - once it melts most of the trail will have no water, and will be challenging for camping. Only met 1 g...

June 30, 2017 Woodswalker 6.6 miles 1,250 feet gained

Started from Wahtum lake and had a short hike before it go hot. The flowers are going mostly full tilt up there. Views of course were beautiful. The bugs were crazy intense everywhere except the ridge top were there was a breeze and the snow is really just a few patches in the saddle between Chinidere and Tomlike. Great day!!

June 28, 2017 Woodswalker 3 miles 1,000 feet gained

Took a stroll up from the lodge to see how the bloom was going. Great views, lot's of miniscule and dwarf blooms in the green parts. To the west of the Lodge on the Timberline Trail, it was too snowy to be fun or flower filled, but the ridgelines east, above White River Canyon were wonderful. the gullies and ravines are still filled with snow though. Fantast...

June 27, 2017 Woodswalker 6.4 miles 1,500 feet gained

Fantastic day with a good friend to get a bit of restoration. Lots of flowers and the trail was in great shape. Lots of people. We could have sold our parking spot to the highest bidder though :) Several cars lined up waiting for a spot. Just perfect.

June 18, 2017 Woodswalker 9.2 miles 2,000 feet gained

I decided to reject Sundays cloud forecast and head East into the Badger with a good friend. Views were great. The lower oak savannah, that is the first mile of the trail is pretty much done blooming except for yarrow and blue ceanothus. Once you are on the north slopes of Ball Point the bloom really picks up with a bumper crop of white ceanothus, and even a...

June 17, 2017 Roman 4.2 miles 1,250 feet gained

Trail is in good shape (a couple short brushy spots, only 1 blowdown); flowers were just starting, maybe at 20%. Should be really good by July 4th. The road had some deep water-filled potholes, especially the last 2 miles - but made it ok in a Corolla so almost any car can too...

June 9, 2017 Karl 18 miles 3,250 feet gained

Sure wish I could still post photos here... Futurecast showed solid green all damn day. NOAA was predicting thundersnow. To hell with them, huh? If you want drama in the blastzone, defy the forecasts! Simply spectacular day, and the weather did NOT disappoint. Wild crazy clouds were with us all day long. It snowed, big badass flakes at times, twice during th...

June 6, 2017 Roman 12 miles 3,000 feet gained

Got a chance to free up Tuesday and went to Mt Hood, to beat the heat and try to reach Paradise Park from Twin Bridges campground. The trail was in good shape up to about 4300', then blowdown and snow started so I went straight up. There was not much snow overall, 1-2 feet deep before 5000' elevation (ridges are already melting out), then about 3-5 feet abov...

June 4, 2017 Woodswalker 8.2 miles 2,250 feet gained

Beautiful day doing the Hardy Ridge loop and up to Phlox Point. Beargrass, Phlox and a plethora of Penstamens were blooming up at the top. Some pretty extensive trail retreading work has been done. Awesome day!!!

June 3 to June 4, 2017 Roman 9 miles 2,250 feet gained 1 night

Really nice conditions this last weekend - sunny and cool, I don't think there was warmer than 65F. Lots of flowers, but they are on the decline. In a couple weeks there will be lots of strawberries, especially along Little Badger. The trail was in good condition, couple of large trees on upper trail I had to crawl under, but overall a lot fewer blowdown tha...

June 3, 2017 Karl 25.5 miles 6,500 feet gained

Fun megaloop up Herman Creek valley, off-trailing up the side of Tomlike, navigating through 6' deep snow over to Chinidere, then following the PCT back across the Benson Plateau taking a steep detour down to Pablo's Pond along the way. <iframe width="540" height="800" src="http://gpsfly.org/gps_map.php?gps_id=7188&w=540&h=800&c=ffffff&m=0" scrolling="no" fr...

May 31 to June 1, 2017 Jen 12.5 miles 2,250 feet gained 1 night

Perfect weather for an overnighter. The trail is popular with mountain bikers, but it hasn't been logged out yet. Had it to myself on this weekday. Flowers everywhere. The Cedar Creek trail has a lovely rolling ridgetop ramble.

May 29, 2017 Woodswalker 10 miles 1,750 feet gained

Herman Creek is a great rainy day hike, but I really always love it in the sun as well. Big news is some trail work has been done. Much appreciation. The two big down logs that were requiring a bit of a go around, are gone. They weren't difficult, but scrambling over them in the mud for those of us with shorter legs was always interesting. The water in Camp ...

May 28, 2017 B-Dog 4 miles 4,750 feet gained

Great day on the mountain !!! The workout was intense, but the turns were just okay. The snow was way over cooked and it took a lot of work to get down the Big R today. Still you can't complain about a clear calm day, I'll take it any day of the week !!!

May 28 to May 29, 2017 runandsew 16 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

Solid snow from 4200'. Both the PCT and Loop signs were completely buried under snow.

May 28, 2017 Karl 13.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

Forecast was for near-90 in the city. This was the perfect antidote! The forest was as chill as things get on such a day. And the waterfalls were glorious with the spring melt. Long drive for a short hike, but one helluva getaway!

May 27 to May 29, 2017 Roman 16.5 miles 3,000 feet gained 2 nights

Explored the lakes and area to the NE, was thinking this is public land as maps show it. Saw property sign on the hike in odd location (well within NF boundary), so did an after-hike research. Turned out this area was in National Forest long ago, then was privatized by Weyerhauser, then sold to a smaller investor in 2007 (& got closed to the public), then su...

May 26 to May 28, 2017 Father Guido Sarducci 18.65 miles 5,250 feet gained 2 nights

Hiked from the Slab Camp TH up to Deer Ridge and then onto Deer Park. Since the road to Deer Park is still closed had the camp ground entirely to myself..... sweet! Next morning hiked up Blue Mtn.& the views @ its 6000+ peak were again.... sweet! Could clearly see Mt. Olympus, Mt. Baker, Glacier Peak, Hurricane Ridge, & multiple peaks from the summit. Descen...

May 26, 2017 Karl 20 miles 5,250 feet gained

Awesome day, finally hitting the elusive Green Point Mountain on a day with blue skies! Always been there in a cloud before. Still lots of snow (6-8') up on the plateau. Don't go without strong nav skills! Went up Nick Eaton Way, which is "pretty real" according to my trusty hiking buddy. That ridge was bare, and a true delight to traverse. Real snow started...

May 24, 2017 Karl 20.5 miles 5,500 feet gained

My good friend Kathy made good on a promise and showed me up the Rock of Ages ridge. Wow, what an amazingly fun scramble that was! We climbed over 3000' in less than three miles. (And the first mile was damn near flat!) Arriving up top, we headed SW then turned down the Bell Creek Trail, and enjoyed the awesome old growth of the deep forest. At the Oneonta j...
