Third time doing this trip, first was in 2013, then 2017. Love coming here before they open the Holmes Road gate on 4/1. We started on the Geneva side, carefully avoiding private property. Descended via Carcass Canyon, fun scrambling. Camped near the confluence. Hiked out up Whychus. Very pleasant trip.

First get to know you hike for my BCEP group this year. A little sloppy but the trails were quiet. The students are like eager puppies and we are all craving the socialness and excited about the season!

I parked my car at the hummocks and slowly rode my bike 4 miles up to the hairpin turn where it crosses S Coldwater Creek. This is where they stopped plowing. Dropped bike and headed up to Coldwater Ridge and spent the rest of the day wandering around traversing some very steep snow fields. Saw coyotes, elks and goats. Epic views all day. Snow got really sof...

Fabulous day! We hiked up Tracy Hill, headed west, and then headed up the old road that heads to the public land boundary. Just barely in public land there is a meadow with a set of double adirondack chairs with a view of Hood. Awesome day, great company.

I had two days in the high desert this week. Tuesday for hiking, and Wednesday for a volunteer gig with ONDA at Clarno. I started at the Starvation boat ramp, downstream from Cottonwood Canyon SP main entrance, but still part of the park.Dreamy walk up and down the river. Unfortunately a little corner of private land with a gate and no trespassing sign preve...

February 22, 2022 Jen 8 miles 1,500 feet gained

Enjoyed a quiet wander on the sun kissed slopes above White Salmon.

February 15, 2022 Jen 10 miles 4,250 feet gained

We were treated to some gorgeous views of the Olympic peaks on the drive and were very excited about the day. Decent forecast. We parked along the road where a snowbank kept us from driving further. The snow was not persistent for the first mile and half, so we carried our skis up and then eventually put them. The road snow was stiff and pockmarked with post...

February 5 to February 6, 2022 runandsew 2 miles 0 feet gained 1 night

Overnight trip with our son to see the Milky Way core. It was a bust. We had the best time with him & girlfriend.

January 31, 2022 Jen 6.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

New winter camera assignment. Snow falling all day. Sustained wind on open ridges, but not as strong as forecasted. Was very pleasant to break trail in 8-12 inches of fresh snow with a solid crust underneath. Very few animal pictures on this set, but I look forward to returning several times this season to see how things change.

Great day. They are doing constructuion near Hidden Falls on the weekdays and have a closed sign just before the falls, but no workers on Saturday!

January 26, 2022 Jen 7.5 miles 2,250 feet gained

Wow some of the trails here have been really fancified! More northerly trails are less maintained with faint tread and some blowdown, yay! All the snow I encountered (back part of loop) was stiff and easy to walk on. Still got some great bushwacking in and found a few more cardavers. Perfect day.

January 16, 2022 Jen 8 miles 2,000 feet gained

Well the 400 is now open, so I took a trip up the Elevator Shaft. Fun as ever, with poison oak down low and icy scree scrambles up top. I then had a nice bushwacking, postholing wander up through Multnomah Basin, visiting Cougar Rock and Nesika Lodge Didnt see anyone for 6 hours until I entered the flowing parade of humanity at Multhomah Falls.

January 16, 2022 Woodswalker 5.6 miles 750 feet gained

Great day. Some icy spots and spikes were helpful for the way down. But most people didn't have them and were fine.

January 15 to January 16, 2022 runandsew 4 miles 750 feet gained 1 night

Late night hike on a full moon to spend the night in decent temps.

January 15, 2022 Woodswalker 11 miles 1,750 feet gained

We set out thinking Phlox Point if snow allowed. The road that goes off of Kueffler to the equestrian TH is closed. So we went over to Hamilton with the thought of seeing if we could get up Phlox that way. No snow until we were on the Equestrian Trail. We hit a place where snowshoes would have been helpful, although they would have also been challenging sinc...

Was scouting out for a trip in the future. Trying to find closer approach than Bonneville. Started at Kidney Lake and was able to skip those boring ugly miles on the pCT, and use the nice bridge to cross Greenleaf Creek, but still had to contend with a long stretch of the Two Chiefs trail. Last mile before Greenleaf Creek was deep, wet snow, breaking trail t...

This morning, I found myself in Beaverton- a place I've been avoiding for a decade. Decided to go visit this park afterwards. It's quite lovely, but despite the name, there are no hills. Looped all the trails. This area is well loved and cared for, and it was nice to enjoy a suburban park with no dogs.

January 8 to January 9, 2022 runandsew 4 miles 750 feet gained 1 night

Night Hike like always. Group camped where we usually stay, but they were in their tent so we very quietly set up a bit away. Gorgeous sunrise by ourselves.

January 2, 2022 Jen 5 miles 1,000 feet gained

Well I forgot microspikes, but that made it more exciting! Frozen mud, black ice, and just a little bit of nice snow here and there. Newton Road was fine, BPA road was sketchier but it was wide enough that you could zigzag around the worst parts. Wildwood was the worst.

First hike of the year. Just a shorty in Forest Park to get the blood moving. Microspikes used as most of the trail was icy.

January 1 to January 2, 2022 runandsew 4 miles 250 feet gained 1 night

New Year's Eve with two of our adult kids and a girlfriend. It was the girlfriend's first time snow camping and it was 9 degrees. She was a champ but no one got good sleep. However, we did see the fireworks from Timberline Lodge.

I generally don't make Cape Horn a priority for hiking, but today in the snow it was gorge-ous Haha

December 19, 2021 Father Guido Sarducci 8 miles 3,500 feet gained

This used to be one of my favorite close by conditioning hikes, but alas no more. I have not been up there since they logged the 3 summit areas and while it has opened it up for some expansive views it has obliviated many hiking trails that led to the summits, plus now you are forced to hike on a muddy road through clear cuts to traverse between the summits....

Forgot to add this one in - partial trip. Had the dog with me and felt uncomfortable going over sllides/dealing with worsening cold weather as I went up in elevation. Listened to my gut and turned around to play it safe and will come back another day.

December 10, 2021 Woodswalker 7.3 miles 500 feet gained

Had a great morning with a friend hiking north from Germantown RD on the Wildwood.

December 5, 2021 Sarah Johnson 8 miles 2,250 feet gained

A cold but pleasantly clear day. Found yet another abandoned vehicle when walking the road back to make our trip into a loop. Motorized users have completely trashed the top of Bald Butte and the trail heading to the top. Hillside is one huge road. Unfortunate that there is nothing done to stop illegal activity there.

December 5, 2021 Jen 11 miles 3,250 feet gained

Nice day in the coast range! Went with ICS pals and pace was brisk. Some icy rocks to negotiate on the traverse. Found out we all loathe the coming down Kings, so we took Coronary Ridge to the Wilson River trail(Kings Jr), and that was much more pleasant and only added an extra half mile distance.

December 2, 2021 Jen 7.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

I was heading east on I-84 and looked over and saw goats on Dog Spine, plain as day. Okay, four white blobs, but I was convinced and immediately changed my hiking plans to see if I could find them. Left the trail rather early and spent hours bushwacking the steep south facing slopes, heading easterly. It was mostly pleasant. Unfortunately I overshot the Dog ...

I don't know why this one always feels like the hardest hike ever. But it was still a wonderful day. A few patches of snow, sitting by the fire at the lodge, visiting with Bruno, and stopping by the closed Phlox Point Cabin Taco Chalet and yes I used taco and chalet in the same sentence. Great day
