Hiked as far up as where the trail intersects with the lower Mt. Ellinor Trail. On this day the entire route was snow covered but no traction devices were used.

Had a great day out with my buddy Simon and Jason. The snow was stellar and it actually bonded fairly well to the rain crust that was buried 30" below. Wishing that I would have brought my ski's instead of slowshoes. I brought my dog Mindy with us on this trip and her age is finally starting to show. It was a long tough day for her, but she pushed through it...

We attempted to do the traverse from Dutchman Flat to Three Creeks, but had to start in a snow storm, temp in the low teens, visibility poor. After 3 miles and 3 hours of breaking trail in knee deep powder, we knew we were not going to make the first hut before nightfall. We turned back and regrouped at a hotel. The next day the hut owners gave us a snowmobi...

February 18, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 5.28 miles 2,000 feet gained

Took the Chirico Trail up to Poo Poo Point. They have really gentrified this trail with lots of new switchbacks & stone steps. For a short training hike the old trail was much better.

February 13, 2018 Woodswalker 8 miles 3,000 feet gained

Yesterday was beautiful and sunny but with a bitter wind, so I chose to stay in the trees and go up Augspurger Trail to the top of Dog. I have missed the gorge sneak peeks through Douglas firs so I was super happy to go this route. The wind had shifted to the north by the time I hit the top, so the trees made a lovely warm place for an extended lunch. The Do...

Past trip, still trying to catch up on my hikes so sorry for spamming the site as I knock these out. I love Saddle Mountain, and simultaneously hate it. The grating on the steep parts of the hike always make my footing feel a bit unsure. Chain link fence material has been put on a large part of this trail due to the lack of topsoil, but is in bad shape in ma...

We decided to hit Bald Butte from the Northern end off FR 17/ Pinemont Dr. using and ATV route for the first few miles. Then we headed south, to the Rimrock viewpoints. There was no snow at all, although to the west, it was evident there was snow much lower. Just a few small ice patches on the trail. Wonderful day.

Parked at ski bowl, which adds to the mileage of this hike. This hike was lead by my friend Kat (who was an assistant when I took BCEP), who is a new Mazama's hike leader, through meetup. Cold, clear day and a steady pace. Trail was hard packed and snowshoes were not needed. Also along was my fellow BCEP friend and Mountain Dog, Prasanna. (Who is now becomin...

February 10, 2018 B-Dog 2.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Had a nice day out with Jason & Theo last weekend. The forecast called for sunny skies and the stoke was high. Our original intent was to climb Bryant Peak. We thought that with the recent rain and layer of crust on top of the new snow that conditions were going to be optimal for climbing. The avy report was low and the (3) OG's had confirmed for a 7:00 a.m....

February 10 to February 11, 2018 runandsew 4.5 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

Night hiked to our favorite spot. Used microspikes because snow shoes were overkill on the hard packed snow.

February 10, 2018 Jen 9 miles 4,500 feet gained

Gorgeous day, tons of people on the mountain, including many skiers, snowboarders and dogs! Seemed like a tourist trail and quite a few plodders not very well prepared. Above 6000 feet the temp dropped and snow was very icy, crampons needed. At 7000 ft we saw a scary accident. A fellow tried to glissade a very steep and icy section, he quickly lost control a...

Great day in partial sun. The grass widows are starting to spread up the slope and a few umbels are blooming. Lovey time strolling and exploring.

February 3, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 6 miles 3,500 feet gained

Snow began a bit before the summit loop junction & while I used micro spikes I wish I had brought the snowshoes as the postholing became a pain the higher one climbed due to the warm temps.Trail to the top is relatively easy to follow after the junction. Just keep your eyes open for the orange ribbons.

February 1, 2018 Roman 1 miles 250 feet gained

Saw big smoke on the way to post office, decided to investigate. Turned out it's firefighter training/ demolition, not accidental fire.

January 31, 2018 Sarah Johnson 6 miles 500 feet gained

Night hike through the ape caves. Worked a full day, and with a friend in town from Florida, we decided to take him out to Ape Caves because it was something we could do without daylight. Happened to be the night of a blood moon. Did both lower and upper, no other creatures or beings in site. Icy descent into the caves, and pretty slippery hike back on the h...

Chapman and Arcadia Beach, and Hug Point. Only Chapman had some recent storm impact (dunes partially eroded). Arcadia and Hug Point had access trail washed out, but still easy to get to the beach. No logs on the beach to speak of, nice - after watching some recent storm coverage I expected everything to be buried with logs. Some of the lowest tide I ever see...

January 28, 2018 Jen 3.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

We have an exchange student from Germany who recently joined our family. I wanted to show him the gorge.

January 27, 2018 Woodswalker 4.8 miles 750 feet gained

About 3 feet of fresh snow up there. Fortunately, a couple other folks had broken trail just ahead of us. We had a lot of fun getting snow bombed by the trees. We had thought about doing a loop over to Chocolate Falls and down, but the boulder field was not covered in enough snow and the trail was not apparent, as well as the sky being misty with very low vi...

January 26, 2018 Roman 5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Grass widows already out and about (not many, but nice to see 1st signs of spring). Wanted to cross Catherine Creek around 1200' via abandoned road & going offtrail, but after catching 3 ticks on me decided against bushwhacking. Mostly stayed out of rain, even though it poured around Table/Hamilton/Dog on the way out & back.

January 25, 2018 Jen 8 miles 1,500 feet gained

We rented some Forest Service cabins at this historic site on the Santiam Wagon Road. Has been around for 100 years as a waypoint for pack trains. Really delightful cabin with a great porch overlooking the lake. First two days were rainy, had to drive further up to Santiam Pass to get some snow action. On the third day we woke to a magical new layer of snow ...

January 20, 2018 Woodswalker 15.8 miles 2,500 feet gained

Awesome day out in the creekside green. Lots of old cedars, mossy trees and waterfalls galore. Plus fun company with a great trail friend and a really fun new trail friend. I've so missed the mossy river canyons. Plus no rain!!!

January 15, 2018 Woodswalker 3 miles 500 feet gained

I decided to take my afternoon walk as a small hike to Lauterell Falls. it was a great idea.

January 14, 2018 Sarah Johnson 5.7 miles 1,250 feet gained

This hike was originally planned to be a snowshoe hike... well, we carried our snowshoes but we never actually unloaded them from our packs. An abnormally beautiful and clear day, we lucked out and had a completely unobstructed view of Rainier. While I was disappointed I didn't get to use my snowshoes due to an almost completely snow free trail, I can't comp...

Out n back on lower trail. Great day, sunny, near 60s.

January 13 to January 14, 2018 runandsew 10 miles 750 feet gained 1 night

Our original plan was to catch some stars at Trillium Lake, but a traffic fatality by Rhododendron changed our plans. Since we were night hiking, we chose the route from the closed bridge to the Sandy crossing on the Ramona Falls trail and spent the night off the trail. Micro spikes would have helped, but we left them in the car. This Is a perfect reason to ...
