August 11 to August 12, 2018 runandsew 2 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

No judging. We started hiking at 7:30pm and our goal was a good spot for the meteor shower.

August 11 to August 15, 2018 Woodswalker 53.5 miles 9,500 feet gained 4 nights

I had an amazing eastern Oregon trip, doing several day hikes out in the Wallowas. My favorites were Ice Lake, Mirror Lake and Chimney Lake. I had planned to push myself by doing a couple of summits, but the temperatures were in the high 80's even at 7600'. So I was forced to chill out by the lakes instead, which was the best idea ever. The bloom is 70% done...

Not really a hike, just a nice vacation day on a lake. Mosquitoes were minimal, berries - plentiful, finally the time to hit trails in Indian Heaven. But I need more practice swimming, it's been a long time..

August 8 to August 10, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 9.75 miles 2,000 feet gained 2 nights

Camped @ White River & spent a day up at Sunrise hiking to the Fremont Lookout & up to Dege Peak. Hot & hazy conditions.

August 6 to August 7, 2018 Jen 17 miles 5,000 feet gained 1 night

This was a (mostly) fun solo adventure. I started at 5pm at the Upper Dungeness TH and hiked in to the junction with Royal Creek and set up camp. Next day I hiked up the Dungeness to the super steep Goat Lake trail. Saw a bear! Swam in a gorgeous alpine lake! Took a nap next to a gorgeous alpine lake! After lounging over an hour at the lake, I scrambled up a...

August 5 to August 6, 2018 Jen 14 miles 4,750 feet gained 1 night

We started in the late afternoon and hiked up the Upper Big Quilcene. Set up camp in the meadows just below Marmot Pass. Beautiful sunset. Got up early the next morning to summit Buckhorn, then returned to camp, packed up and headed out. Very nice day.

Got a nice "hike" picking blueberries and peaches most of the day (to fill freezer for winter). One of the reasons I like living here is we're not limited to fruits from the mall, that taste like plastic. Now if we only get some decent rain so wild mushrooms can start..

August 4 to August 5, 2018 runandsew 12 miles 4,750 feet gained 1 night

Started hiking at 7pm and made it to the shelter on the Timberline Trail in record time. Set up our tent at 7,000', caught the stars, then woke up and headed up to 8500' and all the way back down. Ouchy toes.

August 4, 2018 Sarah Johnson 13 miles 3,000 feet gained

After a weekend off from hard hiking, my friend Tom from BCEP called out on facebook to see if anyone would like to join him for a somewhat strenuous, 13 mile hike by Mount St Helens. I responded, as did fellow Mazama member Prajwal (whom I met when he was our assistant during BCEP), and his partner Dan. I added my partner Zane to the mix (first time he has ...

July 28 to July 30, 2018 Roman 10 miles 0 feet gained 2 nights

Nice rest from the heat at the beach. Gorgeous gray skies, cold water, foggy 65 degrees, even some drizzle at night :) Low tides in the morning were the lowest I ever seen. Camped nearby in the Coast Range. It was nice to stay half day on Monday, before driving to work.

Remember when I said I was going to do something easy and not do any climbing? Yeah, that backfired. Anyone who has followed social media this past two weeks knows how much of a overcrowded nightmare Lower Lewis River Falls was. I didn’t set out on my day intending to be part of a problem. I knew it was going to be hot, and I wanted to swim. I didn’t want to...

July 28 to July 29, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 10 miles 7,250 feet gained 1 night

This was a tough climb. We climbed via the East Ridge. The approach is brutal, you climb 4000' in the first 2 miles with 1000' being a boulder scramble..... and with a 30lb+ pack and the hot weather we were pretty gassed when we made it to camp at the Roush Creek Basin just below the Eldorado Glacier. Day 2.... climbing to the top of Eldorado's 8868' peak, w...

July 24, 2018 Jen 4.5 miles 500 feet gained

Trying to get a little am exercise before the oven turns on.

July 22, 2018 Woodswalker 7.6 miles 2,250 feet gained

A marvelously quiet and beautiful day on the mountain. We hiked from the lower Cooper Spur TH up the Tillly Jane trail. The Lupines are mostly done, but the goldenrod, yarrow and penstamens were going strong. We headed over at the top to Cloud Cap, which was open for a tour, so we got to see the inside. We just caught a bit of the tour, but it sounded great....

July 21 to July 24, 2018 Roman 33.5 miles 6,750 feet gained 3 nights

4 days of exploring mountain meadows, scree fields, abandoned trails, ponds, and waterfalls. So much to see there!

July 21 to July 22, 2018 Sarah Johnson 12.4 miles 6,750 feet gained 1 night

After last week, I was really doubting myself, and wondering whether I could do another summit just one week later. So, naturally, I emailed my climb leader George, who was one of my BCEP instructors, asking him what pace he intended on taking. I was assured, "Don't worry Sarah, I take a slow pace on this one." So I figured, worst case scenario, I make it to...

July 21 to July 22, 2018 runandsew 3 miles 500 feet gained 1 night

We simply wanted to get some star shots, so only hiked 1.5 miles out, set up camp.

July 21 to July 22, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 20.81 miles 5,000 feet gained 1 night

When hiking up Buckhorn Pass/Peak I have been intrigued by a rock formation to the N/E of Buckhorn located on a high ridge. Doing a little research I was able to determine that while the formation has no official name it was called by area miners as " The Castle". We entered at the Tubal Cain Mine TH and made camp just below Buckhorn Pass. Picture perfect ev...

July 18 to July 19, 2018 Jen 7.7 miles 3,750 feet gained 1 night

What a great day of off trail rambling in alpine terrain. Alternating travel between rock, snow and meadows kept it interesting. Saw one goat and lots of marmots.

July 16, 2018 Woodswalker 12.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Wonderful day around and above Paradise Park on Mt. Hood. The flowers are still looking good. The biting flies aren't bad and I got up high enough, early enough above the park, to see some of the waterfalls coming off the glaciers. Wonderful day.

July 15, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 4.2 miles 2,000 feet gained

Took the trail to the saddle of Pinnacle and then climbed to the 6374’ summit of Plummer Peak. It is an easy climb to the summit w/ no exposure. All class 2 stuff. Views from the peak were 360 & very nice. Then returned to the saddle and followed the climbers trail to the saddle of The Castle. Summiting the Castle is a much more difficult climb which is beyo...

July 14 to July 17, 2018 runandsew 28.5 miles 5,000 feet gained 3 nights

Well, I got nailed by mosquito and ant bites with long sleeves and long pants. Errggg. Other than that, No Name Lake was possibly the most beautiful scene we have ever encountered.

July 14 to July 15, 2018 Sarah Johnson 13 miles 5,000 feet gained 1 night

This was a hard climb for me, I don't do well with hot weather and elevation gain. Add to that our climbing party had two different speeds, one of which started out with way too fast of a pace for me. We left Portland Saturday morning around 7:30 am, stopping for breakfast near the Zigzag ranger station. I tried to fuel up but my stomach was in knots and I f...

July 11 to July 12, 2018 Roman 2.5 miles 250 feet gained 1 night

Probably the laziest overnight trip (it was warm in low 80's, but so much better than near 100F at work); I got there on Wednesday just before dark, and spent Thursday swimming in the lake, going around it and checking out Little Boulder, and just reading in camp. Awesome day.

July 8, 2018 Woodswalker 14.1 miles 3,750 feet gained

Absolutely fantastic day up exploring on Mt St Helens. The flowers are still peaking up around the Observatory and the lakes were beautiful as always. Tagged Coldwater Peak on the way back, which was awesome. Good company and good views. Perfect day.

Our last day in Skye: an introduction to the Black Cuillins. This is where I would return for backpacking. Jagged ridges, high lonesome lochs. Best of all-no sheeps! Makes a big difference in the botanical diversity. The big gabbro slabs are so grippy and invite scrambling up the ridges. It was an overcast day, and my pictures do no justice to the ominous be...

July 7 to July 8, 2018 Roman 6.5 miles 3,500 feet gained 1 night

Went to about 8,700, not sure if I found the actual Triangle Moraine but was somewhere close. Great breeze, great views, lots of butterflies (video @ the link). Unfortunately my camera died before I got to best stuff. Hiking on glacier was pretty cool, as well as view north to all the cliffs, and the falls at the head of Clark Creek..

July 7, 2018 Sarah Johnson 11 miles 2,000 feet gained

Felt sluggish, fat, crampy, and my fingers felt like sausages today. Forced myself to get up and we headed out to Ape Canyon. It was a fairly gentle climb, dodging mountain bikers through an old growth forest spared by the Helen's blast. Views were spectacular today as the clouds lifted. It always amazes me seeing the power of our planet in person. Great hik...

July 6, 2018 Roman 2.5 miles 250 feet gained

Short hike after work. Slow, rocky road there, was surprised to see a Corolla at trailhead - it can certainly be done.

July 4 to July 6, 2018 Father Guido Sarducci 39.64 miles 7,500 feet gained 2 nights

Started trip from the Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center TH. Hiked in about 15 miles on day one and set up camp at Martins Creek. Very nice campsites there. Day 2 day hiked up to Elk Lake, Glacier Meadows and up to the Blue Glacier via the Lateral Moraine Trail. From the Lateral Moraine Mt. Olympus is right in your face...just awesome views. Spent a couple of ho...

The Quinag(pronounced Coon-yak) is a Gaelic word for milk pail. We stared at this massive sky island for 3 days, and then climbed it! It was hot and there are no trees on this mountain. Magnificent views all around and fun ridgewalking on the top. Never saw the milk pail resemblance, oh well.
