Surveyor's Ridge Trail is well maintained by mountain bikers, although I only saw a few on this Friday before the Memorial Day Weekend. There are multiple access points and lots of off-trail scrambling available. Got really slowed down after I found a few morels, could not stop searching for them.

May 25 to May 28, 2012 Barnaby B. 9 miles 1,000 feet gained 3 nights

Went here with a coworker and her family, for memorial day weekend. Was really more car camping, they had a huge setup and I had my backpacking gear (which, given that I'm still relatively new to camping, that's all I have). There were a lot of families here, every campsite was full of laughter from kids running around and playing ball. I however preferred t...

May 25 to May 27, 2012 RenegadePilgrim 27 miles 4,000 feet gained 2 nights

Originally, the plan was to go on the Eagle Creek Trail to 7 1/2 mile Camp for the first night, Wahtum Lake for the second night and Hunters Camp for the third night...basically Eagle Creek Trail to Wahtum Lake to PCT to Ruckel Creek Trail....all was going well, but I am getting ahead of myself! So, we headed up to Eagle Creek on Friday and hit the trail aro...

May 24 to May 28, 2012 Mike Bullington 40 miles 2,000 feet gained 4 nights

A four-day downstream walk of the Rogue River. We hired a shuttle service to ferry our car to the exit trailhead. It was expensive but made the trip ideal. Weather was great, just a few showers the first night. The heat was only strong one afternoon and only bad in areas without tree cover. Flowers were in bloom. We had no issues with bears, though we did se...

May 20 to May 21, 2012 Water (Matt) 11 miles 4,500 feet gained 1 night

turned back shy on account of poor weather. but a good first ski tour, well, other than walking 2 miles+ with skis on my pack and ski boots on my feet. that blew. odd cause a year earlier it would have been a car2car on skis trip.. oh well..will be interesting with the huge pole creek burn to do in the future (on snow or otherwise).

May 20, 2012 Stephanie McCloud 6 miles 1,750 feet gained

Albuquerque, NM First real hike since finding out I'm pregnant. I did Mt. Taylor when I was 4 or 5 weeks but I wasn't feeling any different, then. So, we thought that we would take this trail up to some point from which we could view the annular eclipse, but quickly realized that the second half of the hike was deep in a canyon with heavy tree cover and no v...

May 20, 2012 Kiri & Mary 3.5 miles 500 feet gained

Kiri: Two weeks ago we were in Hood River and saw the article about this hike in the Oregonian. We vowed to return to catch some wildflower action. Not the perfect day to be up there, Mt. Hood was shrouded in clouds, but the flowers were eye-poppingly gorgeous regardless. We went later in the day and had the entire ridge pretty much to ourselves. Mary: This ...

May 20, 2012 Stacey 9 miles 2,000 feet gained

Today's overcast skies and slight drizzle made for an almost perfect day on Coyote Wall. We arrived at the trailhead around 9:40am, and found about 20 cars parked in the dirt lot next to the trailhead and along the road. It seemed that there were more hikers on the trails today than mountain bikers. The lower meadows had some wildflowers. The upper meadows w...

May 19 to May 20, 2012 Ken 12 miles 1,250 feet gained 1 night

Nice day, sun shining, moderate temps, no bugs, wildflowers blooming. Snow free and not too muddy. Plenty of water. Quiet night. Great early season over-niter.

May 19 to May 20, 2012 Chris Brooks 17 miles 4,000 feet gained 1 night

Last weekend about 19 of us from from Troop 224 in Sherwood, OR ventured to the Columbia Gorge for an overnight backpacking trip on the [Eagle Creek / Benson Loop trail][portlandhikersfieldguide]. This is my trip report with some photos ([see the rest of the photos on Flickr][flickr]). This hike has two distinct halves -- a meandering stroll up Eagle Creek (...

May 19 to May 20, 2012 Joshua Hudson 28 miles 2,000 feet gained 1 night

My dad and I did a overnight hike into the Enchanted Valley this past weekend. We had perfect weather for the way in. Sunny, clear and in the high 60's. We left the trailhead around 8 and arrived in the valley around 3:30. Could of done the hike faster, but we were taking our time and took a ton of pictures. The trail is in very good condition. Workers have ...

May 19, 2012 Roman 6.5 miles 1,000 feet gained

This thing is more impressive than Multnomah - I don't know why I didn't visit it until this Saturday!

May 19 to May 20, 2012 Sven 1 miles 250 feet gained 1 night

A short hike to "Mägdeberg", sleeping under the stars, and climbed the next day some one pitch IV and V routes up there

May 19, 2012 Christophe Deppe 4 miles 1,500 feet gained

Due to a late start we already knew we likely wouldn't make it to the top of Icicle Ridge, but when we encountered the rattlesnake hiding in the brush right next to the trail at approx 3800 ft (2 miles in) we elected to take pictures and turn around. It didn't seem too threatened so walking past it could've worked out just fine. It did know how to hide excep...

May 19, 2012 Josh Mayer 4 miles 0 feet gained

Nice place for day hikes. Some level riverside walks higher up. Standard leg-burning, steep hike with waterfalls near the bottom. Didn't check out all the way to the top of the valley. Did some road walking.

May 19, 2012 Bosterson 16 miles 4,500 feet gained

Up the Elevator Shaft, over to Nesika Lodge, then up Franklin Ridge to Larch Mountain and down the normal trail. Snow almost nonexistent until just before the Larch Mountain Road (which itself is covered by a couple of feet, melting fast).

May 18 to May 22, 2012 Chris 41.5 miles 10,750 feet gained 4 nights

I had a few days to get away in May, and the Sierra was having a record low snow year, so it was an easy choice for where to go. I packed up the car and made the trip down to Mammoth Lakes for a quick sleep in the campground. (hint: if you arrive real late, camp in a campground where the host collects the fee, and then leave super early…) The next morning, I...

May 18, 2012 Jen 8.5 miles 1,750 feet gained

Moseyed on up to Sturgeon Rock via the Tarbell Trail. It's pretty nice up there!

May 17, 2012 Kiri & Mary 6 miles 1,000 feet gained

Solo Kiri: First time up this particular route to Council Crest. You get a bit of a breather on the way up as opposed to starting from Duniway Park and simply climbing straight up. Went left at Marquam Hill Road which added about 4/10s of a mile via the upper Marquam Trail, looped back via the "easier" route. Tons of slugs on the trail. The view from up top ...

May 17, 2012 jon 6.5 miles 5,250 feet gained

A cold but gorgeous morning on Mount Hood with Shane and our buddy Kevin. The snow in the chute was nice and firm, and the views at the top were fantastic!

May 17, 2012 Shane 8 miles 5,500 feet gained

It was frigid cold at about 2am as Kevin, Jon and I left the parking lot, wind gusts blasting us with sand and snow at ~30-35 miles per hour. Riding on 2 hours of sleep, hiking by headlamp in the dark and platypus hose frozen solid (despite blowing the water out of it each time) you wonder for a moment if you're making the right choice. We were. The sun star...

May 17, 2012 Jen 8 miles 1,250 feet gained

Wandered around on some wonderful old roads off Palmer Mill Road, west of Angels/ Devils Rest. Found some trails maintained by someone and relics of old ( near old and old-old). Bushwacked over to Devils Rest and saw two people. Bushwacked away and was alone for the rest of my hike. On the drive out I noticed the Angel's rest TH was full. See ya!!! Solitude ...

May 15 to May 16, 2012 Hendrik Morkel 84 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

A bikepacking trip, we rode from the Parkano railway station to the Seitseminen National Park and onwards towards Kuru, where we camped at a nice camp site. The next day we continued to Kuru and then via back roads to Tampere, from where I took the train back home.

May 14, 2012 jon 10 miles 3,750 feet gained

This time last year I hiked Nesmith Point and experienced two feet of snow starting around 3000 feet. This year the trail was completely dried out, except for five small snow patches (all of which will probably disappear by the weekend).

May 13 to May 15, 2012 Tom 55 miles 500 feet gained 2 nights

This was supposed to be a 3 night 4 day trip but we got ambitious when we got to our campsite on day two and decided to keep hiking. Ended up doing just over 21 miles that day and total we did 55 miles which included some biking.

May 13, 2012 Stacey 6 miles 250 feet gained

Beautiful day for a recliner hike to Jawbone Flats. Lots of folks on the trail with small children and strollers, but all the old mining / milling equipment gave me many opportunities to geek out. Operational Pelton wheel? Oh yeah....

May 13, 2012 Bosterson 10 miles 3,500 feet gained

Hot Springs/Dick Thomas TH, up Westway trail, down NW ridge. Brought snowshoes thinking it'd be like 4/11 when I was post holing, but after a couple of weeks of 80 degree days, there was no snow up there!

May 12 to May 14, 2012 Roman 27.5 miles 3,750 feet gained 2 nights

Did 3 day 2-night loop in Mill Creek Wilderness. The trail has been repaired in its entirety last year, and even though there's some new blowdown from this winter, it's much easier to follow now. Unlike my 2011 trip there, got lost zero times! This time got there before the best of the flowers, but beat mosquitoes in parts of the hike. Met Water (Matt) at th...
