Wonderful weather dayhike to a coastal favorite. Great views, from Hood to Coast!

February 15, 2015 Father Guido Sarducci 7.25 miles 2,500 feet gained

Jefferson Ridge is a short but steep hike to a former fire lookout site. The remains of the old lookout are present. The FS road to the trailhead is very rough & a high clearance 4 x4 is recommended. Elk Lake was a pleasant hike but I found the lake to be unimpressive.

February 15, 2015 Bosterson 12.5 miles 4,000 feet gained

Started at Grouse Vista. Up to Pyramid Rock, then up the right side trail to SS. We continued on the Bluff Mtn trail and then up a talus slope to Little Baldy. Sustained winds on the summit of at least 50mph - I had to hide in the windbreak, where it was bearable. Back on the talus use path halfway down, I went around the east side and almost got knocked off...

February 14, 2015 Roman 5.12 miles 1,250 feet gained

Looking at my list just realized I forgot to post this hike. Probably my first loop in that area in a while staying 100% on non-closed trails ;)

February 14, 2015 Mountainkat 10.17 miles 1,000 feet gained

We hiked to lower twin lake, then to upper twin lake. Both lakes had a bit of ice on them. We then proceeded to Palmateer Point and then took the cut off trail to junction with the PCT and returned by the PCT. The only people we encountered were on the trail around the lower twin lake. There was no snow at Palmateer Butte and only a few small patches on the ...

February 14, 2015 Mileage Mike 8.3 miles 1,500 feet gained

My wife and I decided to get away for the long weekend to the Central Cascade area since it was going to be warm and sunny! Our first stop was to Smith Rocks State Park. We had never been here before and didn't know what to expect. When we drove in from the west on Wilcox Avenue and then turned left on Crooked River Drive we were astounded. There were litera...

February 14, 2015 Karl 13.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Spent a wonderful day exploring the area around Cruzatt Rim and Archer Mountain, with Brad acting as a most willing tour guide. First time up there, but won't be the last. Much of the day was spent off trail (so don't follow our track!). Ran into a fresh hatch of ticks on the way down -- they're out there in force, already.

February 14, 2015 Pablo 6.5 miles 2,250 feet gained

First visit to the decaying cabin north of the powerlines. Looked around for the South Hardy Ridge Trail and found trail but too overgrown for me to want to uphill it all the way to the end. I'll try it again from the top down.

February 14, 2015 acorn woodpecker 2 miles 500 feet gained

Today was my son's 1st birthday so the family went up with mother in law for a short but enjoyable jaunt to the forested summit of Mt. Talbert. Great restored Oregon White Oak open forest on the southern slopes. The park (part of Clackamas County Parks) has some of the strictest rules compared with Portland Parks & Rec, which is a good thing: no dogs, no mou...

February 13, 2015 acorn woodpecker 3 miles 500 feet gained

Week 2 of 8 for bird survey. Beautiful morning. Lots of birds. Very few people. Had a more experienced birder friend with me, which was bonus welcomed company and knowledge. The fog broke at 136th avenue and the sunshine was beautiful. Portland was still socked in later in the morning at I-205 on my way back west.

February 13, 2015 Rhonda 7 miles 1,250 feet gained

Had a nice family hike into Marion Lake and Marion Falls today. Not many out on the trail, but I did see a forest ranger for the first time on the trail as we were heading out. He was heading in with a ticket book in hand.

February 13 to February 14, 2015 Kyle Meyer 24 miles 5,000 feet gained 1 night

My friend Kevin and I kicked off 2015 training by going up and sleeping on top of Tanner Butte. It's absurd that, in the middle of February, we didn't even see a patch of snow the entire hike. We started from Eagle Creek and did the creek crossing to get up to the backside of Tanner Butte. I'm not sure I'd really recommend that crossing right now; the water ...

February 13, 2015 Jen 11 miles 5,500 feet gained

Well when we finally got to the snow at about 5600 feet, conditions were perfect.

February 12, 2015 Roman 5.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

4 to 6 pm hike/run to the next bridge after Triple Falls Bridge, I forgot it's "that" far but with good pace made it back shortly before dark. The trail is still closed by landslide 1/3 mile before Triple Falls, but getting around was not a big deal (the washout was trickier going back).

February 12, 2015 Jim 11.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

Apparently I don't pay much attention to nor learn from others' experiences. After several dead end attempts to find the Sedum Ridge trailhead, I eventually bushwacked straight up the ridge for several miles before bisecting the actual trail which I had by now assumed was lost to time. In hindsight, a prior trip report from Pablo mirrored my same findings/fr...

February 12, 2015 Woodswalker 5.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Did a mini hike and went for a small loop up Tracey hill and over to Catherine creek and down. Grass widows are full on. especially lower.

February 11, 2015 Roman 11.3 miles 2,250 feet gained

Overcast, but exceptionally warm day. Saw no other hikers, 2 boats, about 15 elk, numerous birds. Half of the lake is clean and clear, other half (upstream side) was very green, almost like algae bloom - I am curious why now? Mount St Helens was all white with fresh snow, looks like it got a good amount & not just a trace.

February 8, 2015 Mountainkat 8.93 miles 3,250 feet gained

We hiked up Gorton Creek Trail and dropped down on to Indian Point. It was windy and we witnessed some rock falling off the ridge, so we did not stay there long. We then cutover to the Nick Eaton Trail and returned to the trailhead.

February 8, 2015 Chris 5.5 miles 2,500 feet gained

Finally, a real, if not still short, hike this year! This time in the rain, but a good time to go to an otherwise busy place.

February 8, 2015 Stacey 21.8 miles 500 feet gained

Needed to get a 20 miler in today, so we headed east to get a break from the rain in PDX. We ran an out and back to the Harris Homestead. We were on the trail at 9:30am, and didn't see any others until we were a few miles from the TH on our return. Skies stayed overcast, but it was perfect running weather. Not sure what the correct EG is, since my GPS watch ...

February 8, 2015 Mileage Mike 9.6 miles 750 feet gained

In keeping with hiking on knee friendly trails, we went to Stub Stewart State Park. We've only been there once and all I remembered was being on a paved trail. This trail was the Banks to Vernonia trail. It turns out that this trail system is quite extensive and will take many visits to complete. Plenty of hikers on the Banks to Vernonia Trail but nobody on ...

February 7, 2015 acorn woodpecker 3 miles 500 feet gained

Spent the morning doing my "winter" weekly bird survey (week 1 of 8) volunteering with Portland Parks & Rec. Conditions were blustery with showers, but not cold. Full rain gear necessary, especially when I was off trail.

February 7, 2015 Mileage Mike 11.3 miles 250 feet gained

My wife and I are having knee issues from last weeks hike and so we decided to take it easy for a while. We really enjoy this rails to trails hike and decided to hike for a second weekend. The trail in this region is primarily surrounded by trees with many views of the Chehalis River. The river was muddy and quite high but definitely not at flood stage. We h...

February 7, 2015 Rhonda 12.5 miles 500 feet gained

We ran away from the rain this weekend and took a 12 mile stroll on the Deschutes River Trail to the box car. Only had showers the first 35 mins of walking and then it turned into beautiful sunshine. There was crazy wind from about mile 3.75 on. Didn't see another soul until on our way back. Ran into a small group around mile 8 and a couple more at mile 10. ...

February 6, 2015 Jim 4 miles 1,000 feet gained

Just a quick in and out hike with weighted pack before heading off to work. Actually, it's just an excuse to make a guilt-free trip to the food carts. Burn 500 calories, replace them with a 1000. You betcha...

February 4, 2015 Jim 4.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

The plan was a quick loop hike before work starting at the I-84 parking area. As it turned out, the connector trail from Multnomah Falls to the Wahkeena Falls trail is closed. Oh, well. Ended up doing an up and back.

February 2, 2015 Elsie 14.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

Jaunt in the rain on the Bell Creek Trail. Very lovely and glad to have explored this area. A few notes: the Oneonta Trail has washed out and there are closure signs; like the good hikers we are, we obviously ignored them; and the river ford bypass trail just before the third bridge is in great shape - thank you fellow maintenance hikers and trip reporters P...

February 2, 2015 Jim 11 miles 4,000 feet gained

Decided to shake off the post-Superbowl blahs with a long gorge hike. Starting at the powerlines, I started up Cedar Creek. Using the trail along the west side of Aldrich Butte, I eventually crossed the creek, climbing and following Cedar Mountain until reaching the PCT. From there I took the west side trail to TM summit. The gale force winds made the trail ...

February 1, 2015 Roman 6.92 miles 750 feet gained

Planned to make three-mile loop (which I've never done) in Rooster Rock SP, and move on to another hike, but turned out there's many more trails to see. After the loop, I thought: there's zero cars on the parking lot, maybe the only such day in a year - let's check out "clothing optional" beach near Sand Island. The beach and trails to it turned out not so i...

February 1, 2015 Mileage Mike 9.6 miles 250 feet gained

My wife and I both had knee issues today so we decided to try something new. I looked up the rails-to-trails hikes and found the Willapa Trail hike which can be started out of Rainbow Falls State Park. Rainbow Falls is more like a rapids area, and the river crossings have both been washed out and won't be replaced. I know this because the Park Ranger mention...

January 31, 2015 Mountainkat 9 miles 2,750 feet gained

We started at the equestrian trailhead and proceeded to Hardy Ridge, then up to Phlox Point. We saw a few people on Hardy Ridge, but no one at Phlox Point. It was quite windy and cold. A crow was entertaining itself by dropping something and swooping down to catch it over and over. Very neat to see. Some low lying clouds hovering over the Columbia added to t...

Mazama Family Mountaineering Class. After mostly standing around on all day helping kids learn how to use crampons and ice axe, I was able to go for a wander on the trails off West Leg Road.
