Did the loop starting at Wahkeena today. LOVE wahkeena springs, its one of my favorite places to visit in the Gorge. The trail looks a lot different then the last time I visited it in the snow. The trail was pretty empty until we got to the junction with Larch Mt trail where we met a group of hikers having lunch; and of course we saw the usual slew of hikers...

April 24, 2011 Jen 4 miles 1,000 feet gained

Spent several hours doing this short hike because we were practicing rope travel in adverse conditions. A very good learning experience to find out what gear I need for our summit attempt in a month.

April 24, 2011 jon 8.5 miles 3,250 feet gained

The weather was terrible driving out from Portland and I figured that I'd be hiking in full rainwear for the duration. Once I got to the trailhead however, the rain slowed to more of a thick mist, or, "normal." I took the Gorton Creek trail up to Indian Point, cut across the Ridge Cutoff Trail, turned SE up the Nick Eaton Trail for a short while, then turned...

April 24, 2011 Roman 3 miles 250 feet gained

Needed to study for finals away from distractions, so I chose a hike with no crowds and a picnic table in nice meadow. This is a horse park so there were tons of mud. I managed to read a textbook under rainjacket cover, but rain finally drove me off earlier than I planned for.

April 23, 2011 Allison 7 miles 2,500 feet gained

I've never hiked Hamilton Mountain when there are leaves on the trees. This hike was no exception.

April 23, 2011 Sirhikesalot1 2.5 miles 1,250 feet gained

Only had a short amout of time today, this one worked perfectly. Awesome weather, almost no wind at the top.

April 23, 2011 Water (Matt) 5.5 miles 1,500 feet gained

after sleeping in, some AM errands, and needing to be back in town for an evening party, we headed out to Saddle Mnt and went up in an hour and down in a bit less. Spent about 40 minutes eating on top. perfect use of good weather and limited time.

April 23, 2011 Bosterson 10 miles 3,500 feet gained

Started at Aldrich Butte to avoid mud on the Dick Thomas trail. Went up West Ridge - a couple of patches of snow, easy to avoid. Heard there was postholing at the top of the talus field on Heartbreak Ridge. No snow up top at the Gorge end, but the back end was totally covered. Went down the usual NW ridge descent - probably not a great idea, since it was tot...

April 23, 2011 Chris 4 miles 750 feet gained

Four wheeling and target shooting country today. Met an old guy on the gravel road, drinking a bud, propped up against his truck tire, who though my trekking poles were a shotgun, then was passed by another truck full of hooligans who thought they were fishing poles. "Any trout down there?"

April 22, 2011 Water (Matt) 6 miles 5,250 feet gained

Finally got up Hood in 2011. Weather windows + lower avalanche danger have not coincided in months, I swear. Occasionally one or the other would come around for 24hr or less, and never on a weekend. Took up two friends who have expressed interest in climbing and prepped as best they can as far as gear and conditioning. Quite a beautiful day with not too many...

April 22, 2011 Eric Peterson 9 miles 1,250 feet gained

Family dropped me off right before the fee station at Ecola State park and I tromped with my dog over to Seaside Shilo Inn, 9 miles but not terrible elevation. Family had good time playing around in Seaside and I met them for dinner at Doogers, yum. Awesome clear weather and the trail was pretty empty once I got past Indian Point areas. My dog Buddy and I ha...

April 22 to April 23, 2011 Justin Wright 6 miles 750 feet gained 1 night

After hiking back to our car along the Deschutes River on Friday, we decided to take a road trip down towards Bend. Decided to camp at one of the parks near Smith Rock State Park and did some hiking in the park today. It's an amazing park and fun climb to the top of the rocks. Some great views of the Cascades.

April 22, 2011 Chris 17.5 miles 3,000 feet gained

The plan was to go start at the Tarbell picnic area and head up to Silver Star, but I had to leave by 2p to get some work done. Started in at around 8a and much of the ground was frozen at Tarbell TH (1800ft). Saw two horses, two deer and heard an owl that just wouldn't quit. Snow starts around 2800 ft. When I got to the Silver Star trail from Chinook the sn...

April 21 to April 22, 2011 Justin Wright 24 miles 1,500 feet gained 1 night

Wanted a change of scenery so we went and hiked the Deschutes River. It's an awesome hike even though the majority of it is along a road / old railroad. The scenery is very cool, much different than the other hikes I've been doing. We hiked in 9 miles and setup camp. I then did a 6 mile side hike to the top of Rattlesnake Grade. Not much for views at the top...

April 21 to April 22, 2011 Kyle Meyer 16 miles 3,250 feet gained 1 night

Camped overnight again this weekend at Gillette Lake, this time for my friend Shane's birthday outing. We hiked in during the late afternoon, hauling hunks of wood from the clearcut above the lake down to our camp spot. We had a great fire, I caught a trout and cooked him over the fire on a stick, and consumed much beer. The next morning, we headed off to Ta...

April 20, 2011 Gary 3 miles 500 feet gained

A short day hike between school runs to see the dogwoods in bloom. We parked in the South parking lot off of State Highway A. Following some recent rain the trail conditions were fairly wet though not as muddy as on our hike here a couple of week ago. All the ephemeral creeks we saw had running water in them. We decided to go anti-clockwise around the Silver...

April 20, 2011 Bosterson 12 miles 2,750 feet gained

Patches of snow on Oneonta Gorge Trail #424 switchbacks before reaching the top of Franklin Ridge (though no snow up top). The ridge itself has a neat, seemingly little-used trail that runs along its spine and feels very tucked away. Almost turned left at the junction and continued on to Larch Mountain, but thought better of it and went down.

April 20, 2011 Roman 8 miles 3,000 feet gained

Quick hike to Indian Point after work. When I arrived about a dozen cars were parked, but all people were already coming back so I had it to myself after 1.5 miles. Did the loop counter-clockwise. The lower part of the trail is ho-hum, but the upper part is interesting (and steep). I only downloaded a map from NWhiker.com and didn't read description, so the ...

April 20, 2011 Shane 9 miles 2,000 feet gained

I've done versions of this hike many times, and I'll say it's been improving. The portlandhikers.org page is now inaccurate, the signage is fairly good on this hike now. The only confusion from today was due to the construction zone plopped down right by where the trail crosses Hwy 14. We turned around at this point instead of venturing down because it's jus...

April 19, 2011 jon 9 miles 2,250 feet gained

This was an out and back hike, rather than finishing up with the loop. The first few miles on the equestrian trail were rather boring but once I got off of it to head up the ridge, the trail became more varied. If you go, I'd advise not to wear shorts as there's a lot of brush on the trail. Also, at about 2700' I encountered a couple hundred yards of snow th...

April 18, 2011 Anne S. 8.5 miles 2,750 feet gained

Boring walk up Gorton Creek to Indian Point, but views from Saddle almost worth it. Snow on trail to Deadwood Camp, but not on Nick Eaton Ridge. Impressive views of canyon on the descent (I think of Tomlike, Chinidere and Green Point, as well as a very snowy Benson Plateau). GPS read 2850ft at highest, so strenuous elevation but felt gradual since spread out...

April 17, 2011 Water (Matt) 8 miles 3,250 feet gained

Great weather. Decent bit of snow on top. Started at Aldrich Butte TH.

April 17, 2011 Justin Wright 11 miles 3,750 feet gained

After going up to Nesmith on Wednesday without snowshoes I decided to go back and try it again today. I turned around at 3800 feet on Wednesday since the tape marking the trail ended but after making it up there today I realized I actually made it to the top! I just didn't see the Nesmith Point sign that was smashed into the tree. Then again, it was snowing ...

April 17, 2011 Jen 8 miles 3,250 feet gained

Snowy in the trees above the boulder field on the Eastway Trail. Much less snow on the Westway route- just a few drifts below the summit near the indian pits. Table top is snow covered, but the south spur is open, worth postholing over there on a clear day. Dick Thomas Trail is extremely muddy, I recommend starting from the Aldrich Butte TH.

April 17, 2011 Eric Peterson 10 miles 3,750 feet gained

Finally made it to the top of Nesmith Point. Still needed snow shoes starting after the second saddle at 2800', but the snow is finally receeding. Micro spikes would have been ok as well. Saw 9 other people on the way down and chatted with a few. I think one of the couples I talked to are also on Went Hiking since he mentioned he tried NP on this past Wednes...

April 16 to April 17, 2011 Debra Grumbach 19 miles 1,000 feet gained 1 night

from US 20, 5 miles east of Lee, MA hiked South along AT to Shaker Campsite. Stayed at Shaker for 1 night. Returned via same trail to Webster Rd. At Webster Rd, walked along road to Main Rd, Tyringham and hitched a ride back to my van on US 20.
