14 miles of hiking • 5500' elevation gain •
I've got Mt St Helens planned for this Sunday so I thought I would beat myself up one last time. Decided to do Dog Mountain twice and as quickly as possible. The first time up I took the more difficult trail, which isn't very scenic but a tad shorter. I was shooting for an hour up but missed it by 6 minutes. Took the less difficult trail down (I basically threw myself down the hill) and managed to get the first trip done in just under 2 hours.
The second time up, I reversed it and got it done in just under 2.5 hours. The second time was a lot of fun since I met up with a lot of the people I saw at the top on my first trip.
I feel pretty beat up after the hike but that was the point. Saw a bunch of flowers along the first viewpoint but not much at the top. They're just starting to pop out so I have a feeling it might take a few weeks yet.
I'm posting my exact times below since I plan on doing this again in the summer (in hopes of beating my old times).
First Trip
- Up: 1 Hour, 6 Minutes ("More Difficult Trail")
- Break: 13 Minutes
- Down: 38 Minutes ("Less Difficult Trail")
- Total Time: 1 Hour, 57 Minutes
Second Trip
- Up: 1 Hour, 17 Minutes ("Less Difficult Trail")
- Break: 20 Minutes
- Down: 45 Minutes ("More Difficult Trail")
- Total Time: 2 Hours, 22 Minutes
Total Round Trip: 4 Hours, 19 Minutes
Time for a beer...

It was fast - a great workout!
Kyle, why did you took off bottom 5 lines for Most Uphill list? Just as I thought I'm ok as long as in the top 10...
Yeah, please add the bottom 5 back! I also thought I was doing ok as long as I'm in the top 10, lol. :)
Nice job Justin, you're on fire d00d! Have fun on Helens, need to do that one as well...
While your at it, add the 'Most Uphill Per Mile' back too! :P
Nice job on this thing Kyle, I'm constantly checking it to see what Justin has done next. BTW, I don't seem to be getting emails when other users comment in the same hike entry as I have...
Thanks, I'm just hoping for some good weather on Sunday :)
Kyle must have wanted you guys off the list so he cut it to 5 lol.
Are the hearts new? I just noticed those the other day...
Yessir, the hearts are new. Think "Facebook Likes", but for trip reports. I'll be adding a page displaying your "hearted" hikes so you can quickly access your favorite reports.
I can add back the extra stats, but I wanted to make room for a "most hearted" listing, and to bring back combination metrics like most elevation per mile. For now, I'm going to let it marinate, but I've added explicit listings for every user under each ranking.
Sweet...
Oh man, this kinda makes me want to go out there tomorrow and try to beat your time...
Or you could just take tomorrow off Chris. That way I can be on top for uphill for at least a day or two lol.
I hearted yu. At least we met once though... heh
